Our next two Value Add Basketball Game tournament games are
a double header for my alma mater Marquette – against some teams with
significant players on the opposing teams.
The list of player cards follows in the same order that the
actual player cards will appear below includes basic stats and if they played,
or are already projected to be drafted by, the NBA.
(Note: after this original post, 2022 UNC dominated 1994 Marquette much as they did in the real tournament, but Kam Jones avoided a steal and hit a buzzer beater 3-pointer to give MU a split.)
The first game based on how the seeds fell will be a rematch
of Marquette’s sweep of the 2023 season with Creighton. MU is still only a
slight favorite partly because we put heavier emphasis on NCAA tournament stats
– where Creighton made a much deeper run and just missed the Final Four. This game is a fun kind of preview of this season where due to Duke's loss to Arizona Friday, Marquette and Creighton could be ranked 3rd and 4th in the next rankings before Marquette travels to Illinois as a slight underdog hoping Tyler Kolek has recovered fully from a twisted ankle Friday.
The second game features Marquette’s 1994 squad that
featured three future NBA players against the 2022 UNC team that gave Marquette
its most lopsided loss of the last two years – in the opening round of the
tournament. That game had a particularly fun memory for me because I saw the father
of Puff Johnson’s dad Gilbert Johnson (a mountain of a man who played for Pitt
in the lobby after the game (yes he was giving me grief) called Jae Crowder’s
dad, and handed my phone over and they both talked for a while on my phone.
