World Baseball Classic Game Summaries and grid of opponents to play

Below are our game summaries through 6 games each in World Baseball Classic Play. We will insert summaries of games 7 and 8 for teams in the space above the grid, which is updated first in this google doc.

mexico 8, venezuela 2. in the most shocking series to date, Mexico got sweep credit to win the series over heavily favored Venezuela 8-2. it was only the second time in 8 games mexico scored more than two runs, but L Urias hit 2 homers and dodgers world series hero Urias came in long relief to make the sweep hold up. Things in their division are now very interesting with all 5 teams within 3 games of each other.

mexico 1, venezuela 0. mexico shocked venezuela, breaking a 1-1 tie in the 10th on Arauz third hit if the game to put paredes (who started on 2nd base), and then pinch hitter pena grounded to first but venezuela's aguilar bobbled the ball to end the game.

Dominican Republic 3, Cuba 2. Embattled Cuba pitching rotation entered with a 6.00 ERA against the dominant Dominicans line-up, but Perez gave them their best start of the season (5 IP, 1 R) and when Luis Roberts and Grandal homered in the 5th and 6th and Y. Gurriel delivered a hit and run single with no outs in the 9th they almost pulled off the big upset, but Neris closed it out.

Dominican Republic 6, Cuba 4. Severino threw 7 shutout innings for the 2nd straight start, allowing 1 hit ball and Soto homered for second straight game for a 6-0 lead, but in the last 2 innings Luis Roberts homered for the second straight game as one of 5 hits in the 8th and 9th to cut it to 6-4 and put the tying run at the plate before a tiring Rodriguez (down to PB: 2-7) retired 2 pinchhitters.

Japan 8, ACC 5 (10 inn). 1st 5 batters in Japan's order hit incredible .450 in 1st 9 innings of 2 games (18 of 40), but left tons of men on base to go to extra innings both times with 4-4 ties. However, they wore out ACC pitchers in the process and explodes in the 10th for an 8-5 win on Ohtani's 10th inning homer in the first game and 7-5 on Choi's double in the 10th of the second game.

Japan 7, ACC 5 (10 inn) other game. Japan by far the biggest surprise for us, improves to 13-11 and second place in the Multi-Coast Division, three games behind 16-8 Dominican Republic.

Statis-Pro Unusual Baseball Plays for Every Base Situation

This is a fantastic collaborative doc found here at Statis Pro Baseball Advanced. In our Statis-Pro Rules we refer to the old Z-Play unusual plays, but we do suggest using this, first produced by SEAN ERIC HOWARD·WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9, 2020·

WITH BASES EMPTY

11:  Catcher faces up with ump to argue balls and strikes; ump ejects him.

12:  Pitcher thinks umpire is “squeezing” his strike zone.  Ump responds by tossing pitcher out.  For new pitcher, reduce PB rate one for that batter only.

13:  Batter argues with ump about strike calls; ump ejects batter for disrespect.  Increase pitcher’s PB rate one for that batter only.

14:  Batter hits slow roller to first. Pitcher covers, but runner called safe on close play.  Dust begins to fly and someone tosses a hat, hitting first base ump.

Pick a new random number: 11-58 pitcher ejected, 61-78 first baseman ejected, 81-88 both are tossed.

15:  Batter hits ball down line. If Home team at bat, 11-54 indicates a home run, 55-88, foul ball.  If Visiting team, 11-25 is home run, 26-88 foul ball.

16:  Pitcher is caught tossing spitball; ump ejects him. League suspends the pitcher for 7 games.

17:  Pitcher begins cursing ump while approaching the plate.  Batter awarded first with base on balls.  Pitcher warned.

18:  Batter pops up to short, but bat breaks, revealing cork. Ump ejects batter; league suspends batter for 7 games.

21:  Ump rules pitcher failed to deliver pitch in 20 seconds. Batter awarded first.

22:  Batter hits homer and dances the nasty dance in celebration, but ruptures Achilles in doing so. Pinch runner finishes bases.

Use injury chart to determine injury length.

23:  Slow dribbler hit down 3rd base line.  3B uses glove to fan the ball foul.  Interference ruled; batter given base.

24:  Batter gets single, but ump rules batter out due to more than 18 inches of pine tar on bat.  Batter tossed for this game only.

25:  Third strike, but catcher drops ball. Batter gets to first before the throw.

26:  Female fan in RF stands tears off shirt and bra, distracting the right fielder with her exotic dance. Batter gets double; RF gets date.

27:  Batter hits a liner back at pitcher.  The ball caroms off pitcher’s stomach back towards the plate.  Catcher throws out batter at first, 1-2-3.

28:  Batter swings at obvious two-strike pitch in the dirt. Pitcher gets strikeout, but batter makes it to first on wild pitch.

31:  Batter doubles to right but misses first base. Ump rules out on appeal.

32:  Catcher drops third strike for error. Batter safe at first.

33:  Batter singles to right but tries to stretch for double.  RF throws to 2B and picks runner off, 9-4.

34:  Batter hits a grounder towards pitcher.  It caroms off P toward third.  SS picks up ball and throws to 1B for the putout. Score play

       1-6-3.

35:  Batter checks swing, hits slow roller to first but runs into ball. Batter gets credit for single, but is ruled out (putout to catcher).

36:  Batter fouls pitch off shin and leaves game at one.

37:  Foul ball hit into stands. If Home team in field, 3B catches ball, batter out. If visiting team in field, fans rob 3B of ball.  Ump calls

interference on random numbers. 11-41, batter out.  42-88, foul ball and angry third baseman tossed for kicking dirt on third

       base ump.

38:  Fan reaches out of stands on foul ball down right field line.  With new random number, 11-28, interference, batter out (putout to

       1B). 31-88, drops ball foul.

41:  Batter doubles to LF.  Throw from LF to 2b is wild. Batter scores on error.

42:  2B fields a grounder in awkward position.  He tosses ball to SS who gets runner at first.  Incredible play for the 2B.

43:  Batter hits single to left but attempts to stretch to double.  LF throws the ball into the infield where a rundown occurs.  Five

players touch the ball a total of eight times with the catcher credited for the putout at second. (9-3-6-4-3-4-6-2).

44:  Batter singles to RF; RF misses the ball for an error, allowing batter to reach second. CF throws ball back in.  Batter called out

on appeal for missing first base. Score play 8-4-6-3.

45:  Batter hits single to LF. Pitcher immediately picks him off first base.

46:  Batter whacks fly ball to deep RF where a fan in the front row stretches his hands over the railing and catches the ball. Batter

       allowed home run.

47:  Batter hits drive past 3B and down the line to the bullpen fence. Batter thinks umpire calls foul ball returns to the plate while LF

       throws to 1B for out.

48:  Batter hits foul ball above 1B.  1B attempts catch near the base, but 1B coach interferes and 1B drops ball. Batter declared out.

51:  Batter hits a blast to the top of fence. Pick a new random number; 11-31 is a Homerun, 32-81 is a double off the fence, 82-88,

highest CD-rated outfielder makes great catch.

52:  Pitcher hits batter-causing melee. Both pitcher and batter are ejected and suspended by league for 7 games. Ump warns both

benches and any subsequent beanings result in the ejection of the responsible pitcher.

53:  Grounder to short, bang-bang play at first. Ump calls “safe” if Home team at bat, “out” if Visiting team at bat.

54:  Batter hits pop fly in infield and no one takes charge, ball drops for an infield single.

55:  Batter swings at pitch, catcher scoffs.  Both players face up and begin shoving.  Ump ejects both from the game.

56:  Roller up first base line, catcher drills batter in back with ball. If Home team at bat, call it an E2, runners advance one base; if

Visiting team at bat, batter called out for running inside the runner’s lane, all runners hold, putout to catcher.

57:  Batter hits a drive down the left field line. If Home team at bat, ump rules it fair, a double to left; if Visiting team at bat, it’s a foul

       ball.

58:  Blooper to center. If Home team at bat, ump says fielder trapped it; batter safe at first on single.  If visiting team at bat, ump says

fielder made the snag for out.

61:  Batter hits fly to CF. CF goes to warning track where he showboats and attempts a stretch catch with hat in glove. Ump rules

ground rule triple. CF does a juke dance.

62:  Batter checks his swing on 3-2 pitch and catcher appeals to base ump; if Home team at bat, ump says “he held up” and batter

walks; if Visiting team at bat, ump rules batter swung at pitch, strikeout.

63:  Batter hits pop foul toward 1B. Pick a new random number.  If Home team in field, 11-48 - 1B makes fine catch, 51-88, ball goes

foul into stands.  If Visiting team in field, 11-38 – 1B makes catch, 41-88 foul ball.

64:  Catcher is clipped by foul tip. He must be removed for this game only.

65:  Batter hits ball off pitcher’s shins. 1B grabs ball for easy tag out along baseline, but ump rules 1B obstructed the batter on his

way to first base.  Single granted to batter.

66:  Batter hits grounder to 3B who cannot get the ball out his glove. Single.

67:  Batter hits apparent triple, but pitcher argues batter missed touching first base and throws to first for out, but throws the ball

away. Batter awarded first on infield error.

68:  Batter hits foul tip into catcher's mitt for 3rd strike. Use Catcher's CD rating - if the result would result in an out, change to strikeout because he caught the tip, but if any other result than rule that he dropped foul tip and batter still at bat.

71:  Batter hits the ball, which bounces near the mound high into the air toward the gap in RF, and takes off for first.  SS breaks

behind second base, tracking an imaginary ball, loudly calling off 2B on decoy play. Batter rounds first and heads toward

second, but stops near first when he sees the SS with glove up ready to catch ball. He then sees the RF catch the

ball. Runner takes off for second.  SP A runner safe at second; all others tossed out at second.

72:  Batter strikes out, but catcher lets third strike pitch get past him to the grandstand.  Catcher believes ball was fouled and did not

go after it.  Batter runs to second while catcher chases the ball.  The defensive team protest to umpires that it was a foul, but the

decision stands.  After the pitcher begins windup to next batter, umpire calls officials in.  They decide batter should go back to

first base. Score as passed ball.

73:  Batter hits chopper to third base, who tosses to first but ball falls apart on the way. Batter ruled safe, ball replaced.

74:  Batter hits dribbler along third base line. Pitcher goes to field ball, but catcher shoves him out of the way while 3B falls on

ground and literally blows the ball foul.  Play stands.

75:  Batter hits blooper to RF. RF fields ball, but bobbles it and cannot make throw. Batter sees this and heads off for second.  RF

kicks ball to 2B, who is able to make the out at 2B.  Batter argues, but ump stands firm that play is legal.

76:  Batter takes ball outside at the plate but nailed in the head by catcher’s throwback to the mound. Use Injury chart for

       batter.

77:  Batter hits chopper out to LF. Left fielder fields the ball running in, but ball takes odd bounce and goes down the neck entrance

       of LF’s shirt.  Single.

78:  Batter hits a hot one toward third. Ball ricochets off the 3B glove into the glove of the SS, who makes the throw to 1B just in

       time.

81:  Batter hits ball to center field wall where it takes an odd bounce high into the air. Batter thinks he has hit a homer, but is thrown

       out at third base.

82:  Third baseman fields chopper, but ball caroms off glove and into shirt. Single.

83:  Batter hits high ball heading foul beyond first base. Second baseman rushes to the stands, hops up on raintarp roll, and steps

into the stands for the catch. Batter ruled out.

84:  Pitcher delivers pitch, but bug flies into his right eye in process. Must come out of game to avoid delay.

85:  Batter hits high fly ball near third.  Infield comes in late, but ball hits third-base bag and caroms out in stands. Ump rules ground-

       rule double.

86:  Batter delivers hot liner toward centerfield. A flock of white birds suddenly take flight, confusing the CF. Batter takes second on

       ruled double.

87:  Hot chopper to second base. 2B attempts play, but ball slips into his shirt. Batter safe at first.

88:  Pitcher attempts obvious walk with outside pitch, but batter reaches out to make contact. Safe at first.

WITH MAN ON FIRST

11:  Batter swings for strikeout, catcher tosses to first for putout of runner, but ball hits batter’s bat and caroms out of play.  Runner

       takes second.

12:  Batter hits liner, hitting runner heading for second. Batter ruled safe, runner ruled out.

13:  Pitcher throws just as PA system startles everyone with loud cow MOO! Ball hits ground in front of plate, runner takes second.

14:  Batter hits deep fly to center field where CF attempts running catch. Ball hits CF on head and bounces over fence for homerun.

15:  Batter hits liner off pitcher’s foot where it caroms upward. Pitcher catches the ball for the out. Runner holds.

16:  Grounder to third. 3B tosses to 1B who fields ball on baseline and collides with batter.  Ruled interference. Batter safe, runner to

       second.

17:  Chopper to second.  Runner attempts to knock ball from glove to prevent double play.  Interference called, batter and runner

       out.

18:  Pitcher catches runner at first off base. Runner argues he called time out.  Ump tosses runner from game. Out.

21:  Runner attempts steal of second; batter stands in front of catcher to make throw difficult. Interference called. Batter out, runner

       back to first.

22:  Runner attempts steal of second; batter stands in front of catcher. Throw goes in outfield. Runner comes around to score.

23:  Catcher nabs delivery, stands up to throw runner out at second on steal. Throw beans batter in head. Use Injury chart.

Runner safe at second on steal.

24:  Batter hits deep fly that hits top of fence and bounces in. Runner at first stops at second, and batter comes up to second. Mass

confusion. Upon review, play should have been declared homerun.  Batter forced to go back to home, give a ghost swing, and

round the bases. Runner scores, too.

25:  Batter swings and hits foul that drops into catcher’s mitt; CD:4 catcher doubles runner at first.

26:  Female fans bare rear ends to left fielder, distracting him.  Batter gets double, runner scores; LF gets mooned.

27:  Batter gives check swing, catcher and home ump appeal to third-base ump who says no swing. Catcher tosses ball back to

mound, but pitcher going off on third-base ump doesn’t see it and runner at first takes second.

28:  Batter swings at obvious two-strike pitch in the dirt, but ump declares walk. Pitcher argues and is tossed.  Runner to second.

31:  Batter hits foul ball off backstop fence, but ball caroms back to strike batter in head. Use Injury chart.

32:  Batter hits deep fly to RF wall. RF attempts to catch the ball, which hits wall and bounces in play for a triple. RF’s glove is lost

above wall and must come out.  Runner scores.

33:  Batter hits liner to left, where the ball caroms off a beach ball someone tossed onto the field.  Ump rules batter gets credit for

       single, runner to second.

34:  Batter hits a grounder towards pitcher, but bat breaks and pitcher struck by fragment. Single granted, runner to second. Use

next number to determine length of injury.

35:  Lightning strikes foul pole – came called immediately. If tied, home team given host point for the win (unless playoff game – rain

       play for the SS.

43:  Batter hits single to left but attempts to stretch to double.  LF throws the ball into the infield where a rundown occurs.  Five

players touch the ball a total of eight times with the catcher credited for the putout at second. (9-3-6-4-3-4-6-2). Runner scores.

44:  Batter singles to RF; RF misses the ball for an error, allowing batter to reach second. CF throws ball back in.  Batter called out
