deGrom, Defending WS Champ Rangers dominate 106 loss to 1st place KC

Couple of other interesting stats - we only keep a few:

The ERA of all starting pitchers in our game so far is 4.30, just higher than 4.23 this season in real MLB though in 2024 real MLB has dropped to 4.11.

However, the runs per game is actually quite high so far at 5.19 in our game vs 4.62 last year in MLB and 4.43 this year.

Will wait to see if it drops as we log more games.

Texas vs. KC

Jacob deGrom can only go 6 innings, but he has the most dominant card in the game with a pb 2-9, only 7 hits (11-17) and 4 walks (52-55) of the 64 numbers when on his card.

He dominated KC 7-0 for a sweep, though the amazing Bobby Witt JR. Had 2 of the three hits against him.

The 2nd game was just as dominant - a 7-2 win to also count.

After the Rangers complete sweep they inch up to 11-13, but still two spots out of the playoffs.

Below is the preview prior to the two games being played.

The Royals lost 106 games in 2023 and this week snuck into 1st place in the AL Central for a day. The Texas Rangers won the World Series in 2023 and this week are 10 games out of first place in the AL West. Jacob deGrom has sat out almost an entire season but is expected to come back to pitch the last couple of weeks of the season - and will take the mound in the next Statis-Pro game against the Royals.

Since we use current rosters (would be more like 2024 team) but projections for the 2024 season that would be most impacted by how the players played in 2023, we never know whether the team will perform more like 2023 or more like 2024.

We will update with how it plays out ... we just ran all the teams in google sheets of teams and caught a few teams where we were missing a position in our suggested line-up. While doing it, we also marked in blue platoon situations where against a left-handed pitcher we would take out the player in our suggested starting 9 and instead use the reserve in blue. This will not yet be updated in the PDFs, but we will update all at once.

KC Edges St. Louis in Statis-Pro, but Both Short of Playoffs

The Kansas City Royals won the series over the St. Louis Cardinals 4 games to 2 to catch them in the standings after three 2-game series, but both would be out of the Statis-Pro playoffs if they started today. The top 7 teams in our league have all finished four 20-game series. The five teams from 8th to 12th in our league have finished three series each. If teams fall too far behind we don't necessarily play out their games.

The teams at the bottom have been relegated, but each may play two series to get through their rotation once. The Blue Jays already played their two series, and the White Sox will play their second series now.

Seth Lugo pitched brilliantly in the first game allowing only two runs in seven innings. However, he did not get the win as he left in a 2-2 tie. In the bottom of the 8th both Michael Massey and Bobby Witt Jr. hit 2-run homers to key a 5-run inning and give the Royals credit for a 7-2 home SWEEP.

In the second game it was Paul Goldschmidt with a 3-run homer and RBI double to key a 6-2 Cardinals win, but because they could not get the 5-run win they only received credit for 2 wins against 1 loss in that game to go 2-4 in the series.

Memories of 1969 - Red Hot Mets and Orioles Split in Statis-Pro showdown

Remember 1969 when New York teams upset Baltimore teams on the way to titles? The Mets did the same thing in our game by upsetting our first place Orioles in the first game of a 2-game series, though the Orioles did rebound to win the nightcap. In 1969 the Mets and Tom Seaver stunned the Orioles, Joe Namath and the New York Jets stunned the Colts. The New York Knicks stunned the top ranked Baltimore Bullets in the semifinals four games to one.

In a 2-game series between our top two Statis-Pro baseball teams, The Mets won a 2-1 pitchers' duel in Game 1, then the Orioles rallied last for a 8-6 win in the nightcap.

The Mets now have the best record on the 12 teams in our league with a 15-5 mark, but since they were on of three surprise teams we added late they are only eligible for a wild card spot, so they would be our 3rd seed now.

The 3 Divisional leaders from either our East, South or West 3-team pods are eligible before the two byes. Baltimore leads the East with an 18-8 mark for a 0.692 winning percentage for the No. 1 seed, while the Astros lead the South with a 17-9 or 0.654 winning percentage for the 2-seed. Seattle is the third pod leader with a 15-8 record for a 0.652 wining percentage to land the 4th seed behind the Mets.

So our Statis-Pro playoffs if our season ended today would still be the Yankees vs. Mets with the winner getting the Astros, and the Twins vs. Mariners with the winner getting the Orioles.

Here are our complete records so far.

Astros Claim South Pod Dominance in Statis-Pro Texas Slugfest

The Statis-Pro Astros sent 13 batters to the plate to kickoff the battle for Texas with a 10-run first innings. The batters were so dominant in this series that the ERA for starting pitchers in our league play rose from 4.00 to 4.32 in this tracker of all games, standing calculations and starting pitcher stats.

The combined box score is below of the Astros 11-6 and then 12-8 win in the pitching optional series. The Rangers needed to get within five runs by the end of the 8th inning to avoid the game counting as a 3-game sweep in our records, and they cut it to within 11-6 on Josh Jung's 3-run homer in the 7th inning.

At this point the Astros put Ryan Pressly in the game and, after an error, he retired five straight outs to finish the 7th and 8th inning to hold the lead at five runs. Our league rules are a 5-run lead is needed at the end of the 8th inning to get credit for a SWEEP, without using the closer. Pressly has been the closer of course, but the acquisition of Josh Hader meant he was the pitcher who could not be used.

Hader was therefore also available for the 2nd game (we play only 2-game series and each reliever can be used in one of the two games). Hader overcame two fielding miscues by great batters who are poor fielders in the game. Jose Altuve made an error at 2nd base, then on a clutch defense to catcher Yainer Diaz could not get to the ball quickly to allow a 10-foot single. However, Hader got out of it.

The Astros win means the South Pod play wraps up with the Astros 10-02 in the pod and 17-8 overall. The other two pods also were won by a team with a 10-2 mark in the pod, with Seattle beating out Cleveland and Minnesota in the West and Baltimore going 10-2 against the Yankees and Red Sox.

If our Statis-Pro playoffs started today, the Mets and Yankees would play with the winner getting Houston, and the Mariners and Twins would face off with the winner getting the regular season champion Orioles.

For pitchers, we show the projected ERA and then the key to Statis-Pro games, the PB range for the pitcher which shows which dice combos from 2-12 that keep the action on the pitcher's card vs. allowing the batter to have a swing with the chance for extra base hits.

Statis-Pro Yankees Showdown Crush Red Sox Twice, 12-5 and 6-2

Game 1 - Yankees 12, Red Sox 5. As nice as the 12-5 Yankees win in Fenway was against their archival Red Sox, the downside is it did not count as a sweep in our league rules, because a team must lead by 5 runs after 8 innings, and it was only 9-5 at this time.

It also showed the Yankees one weakness in this game, a weak bullpen that gave up a 4-run 8th to blow the sweep. Juan Soto and  Jazz Chisholm Jr. both reached base four times including homers, and Gleyber TorresGiancarlo Stanton and Ben Rice joined them to make it five Yankees with a home run in the bloout.

Carlos Rodón and Nestor Cortes are the best 2nd and 3rd rotation pitcher combo in our game with a PB 2-9 and PB 2-8 (top 5% of all pitchers and best 15% of all pitchers based on WAR divided by innings itched).

Game 2 - Yankees 6, Red Sox 2. As nice as it was to have Jazz Chisholm Jr. homer for a 2nd straight game as his 6th hit in 6 at bats to lead 2-game domination of the Red Sox, there was some frustration (see photos of both box scores at the bottom). In both games the Yankees dominated but led by exactly 4 runs at the end of the 8th inning meaning both games counted as 2 games to 1 win as opposed to 3 games to none if they had one more run in each of the two games to go 6-0 for the series.

The wins still put the Yankees back in our playoffs if the Statis-Pro season ended today.  The Yankees are 11-13 in our league but we have a Strength of Schedule built into our league rules so you don't have to balance the schedule - and the Yankees have played by far the hardest schedule to get a +3 for playing both the Orioles and the Astros so far. That means we adjust their wins by the +3 and they officially are 14-13 for a 0.519 winning percentage.

The Red Sox meanwhile are only 6-12, and even though they get the historically bad White Sox next, they have the only -2 for SOS, meaning the Red Sox will lose 2 wins after the series so they really need to win the series 4-2 to at least break even (it would count as 2-2 with the adjustment.). For now the Yanks are back in the playoffs as a wild card, but trail the Orioles as the best of the 12 teams in our league at 15-5 for a 0.75.

Of the 19 pitchers with two starts in our game, Cortes has allowed only 1 earned run in 10 innings for the 3rd best ERA of 0.90. The Yanks No. 4 starter Stroman is right behind him at 1.38, while surprisingly it was the ace Cole who had a bad first start against the Astros so if further down.

We set up for the box score using the numbers on the cards in the game. The Red Sox will start their 1st and 4th best starting pitchers, and against the righty in game 1 we will start Ben Rice at first base against the righty, and in the 2nd game back at Yankee Stadium we will play DJ LeMahieu at first base against the lefty.

The Yankees will start their 2nd and 3rd best pitchers, which works out well because the Red Sox have a lot of left handed batters in their line-up, and don't really have good enough alternates to platoon. The other team in this pod is the Baltimore Orioles, who are in 1st of the three right now.

We will fill in the box score later, but here are the line-ups, two starting pitchers for the series, and then top five relievers for each team.

Seattle Statis-Pro Nudges Twins Out of 1st While Actual Team Can't Match Success and Fires Servais

June 18 the Seattle Mariners had a 10-game lead in the AL West and then they added Randy Arozarena from Tampa and Justin Turner from Toronto to form what in our Statis-Pro Baseball Game seems an awesome 1-2-3 line-up to go with great pitching.

Playing them in our Statis-Pro game they just rolled through our Center-West pod and are now tied in first place with Minnesota in the division.

Yes somehow in the real MLB they have sunk to 0.500 despite those two key additions to fall behind the Astros again - leading to them firing manager Scott Servais yesterday. We will see if the new manager turns things around or if the host streak in Statis-Pro keeps up, but here is the 2-game box score for their 4-1 loss then 5-0 win against the Minnesota Twins that left the two teams tied atop the pod and ahead of the Cleveland Guardians, who have been the real surprise of the season in the real MLB.

The actual standings and game logs in our game are on this link, and after just 3 or 4 two-game series for team the teams are in the same order in which they finished the 2023 season: In our Standings we adjust the winning percentage for strength of schedule to get the following:

Manager fired as J-Rod 'What-if" Mariners Shocking Double Sweep of Guardians

The Mariners seemed to assemble such an incredible line-up that the stunning collapse in actual MLB as opposed to the impressive showing on paper in Statis-pro perhaps makes it clear why it was time to fire the manager today.

How good would the Mariners be if Julio Rodriguez was healthy and leading off AND they added Randy Arozarena from Tampa, Justin Turner from Toronto and Victor Robles from Washington?

Our What-if format this year in Statis Pro might give a glimpse after the scored the rare double swept of the Guardians - who have the best record in real MLB but drop way down by being credited with losing the series 6 games to none against the full strength Mariners.

Suddenly the two teams switched spots in the 3-team Western pud, with.the full strength  Seattle and Minnesota now virtually tied at 12-6 as they prepare to faceoff in the final 2-game series in the western pod while Cleveland drops from 11-7 to 11-13 into 3rd or 3.

We didn't do the Montana/NL Statis-Pro update justice, because it came right after Willie Mays passed away, so we are reposting it below along with the standings next to our AL (+2 NL teams originally relegated) update. Eight teams are still relegated, but we generally get in a series or two with each one.

The Montana/NL league standings are based on traditional wins and losses in Statis-Pro games played. The Milwaukee league adjusts it a bit, counting each game as three games with a 2 to 1 series winning unless the winner led by at least 5 runs after 8 innings without using their closer.

Here is the original NL update from a couple of months back and we will post the new one when it comes.

Here are our 2024 Statis-Pro cards in sheet form to get you going if you have yet to play the game, and the following are the results from the NL commission based in Montana who rotates Statis-Pro leagues with me each year (this year I have the AL and he has the NL).

2024 Statis-Pro So Far with 10 Teams Selected to Play

I modified the injury policy. (got tired of so many stars dropping)

I’ll go back to the “what if” policy.  (was doing the 60-day IL)

So, I’m keeping the injured stars in play instead of taking them out. (just using Z plays for injuries)

Statis-Pro National League

NL “East”

Atlanta               20-14   .588      -

Milwaukee       19-15   .559      1

San Diego          16-18   .471      9

San Francisco 14-19   .424      11

The Dodgers are rolling and the statistics support their winning.  (helps having Kershaw in rotation)

With their healthy stars, it is surprising the Braves are only six games over .500.  (Acuna, Strider)

After their slow start, will the Phillies catch fire at the end of the season?

Who will emerge out of the jumble of wild card teams in the playoffs?

In our inter-league play the NL leads the AL 32-26 so far.
