Reds and Phillies Improved Players for Series

If you choose to use the in season adjustments on this chart to the current Statis-Pro cards, we have them penciled in on these cards for our Reds-Phillies series.

Game 1 - Reds 10, Phillies 6 (sweep) - the until now hapless Reds improved to 10-23 with the most improbable "sweep." The Phillies led 4-0 with Nola throwing a 1 hitter through 4. In the 5th the terrible fielding left side of the Phillies infield (Trea Turner and Bohm) yielded an error that along with poor center field Brandon Marsh (cd2) misplaying a fly ball into a hitz led to a 10-run inning and the eventual sweep and win for Hunter. Photo of scoresheet below picture of Statis-Pro board.

Game 2 - Reds 13, Phillies 2 (sweep) - in a Statis-Pro season in which teams were averaging 3.1 runs scored per game and the Reds were by far the worst at 7-23 ... The Reds exploded in their hitters friendly park for a 13-2 win. Their record is now 13-23 in our league, virtually the same winning percentage.as.last season. Their scoresheet and the new standings, with the Phillies knocked out of the playoffs if they were today, are at the bottom of the blog.

The Reds do get an improved PB 2-7 Hunter Greene (color green on the link above) and in the second game get to face a PB 2-6 Ranger Suarez (color red on the chart). Two Reds relievers in the upper left also have a plus to improve one PB.

Through the first five series for all teams the average runs scored per game were 3.1. in the first 8 games of the 6th series is 6.6. Mets beat cards 15-2, the cards win the rematch 11-6. Pitt heat ATL 4-1, then ATL win 6-2. Milwaukee beat Arizona 13-4 and 6-5 before the Cincy wins over Philly 10-6 and 13-2 for the 6.6 average. These four series increased our average league game was increased from 3.1 to 3.6 in these 4 series.

Note that Joey Votto's card cannot be used because he is on 60 day DL.

The Phillies on the bottom right do have two stars (Trea Turner and Kyle Schwarber) with a minus for being red on the sheet, meaning Greene will actually get to be a PB 2-8 against them. Two players at the bottom of the order are improved so get to reduce Hunter back to a PB 4-7 against them. Jose Alvarado is green bay cannot go higher then the best rating of pb 2-9, even though his 0.63 ERA made him green.

Here is the setup - results will be added.

Statis-Pro 5th starter Miley Beats DBacks

Wade Miley would be the 5th best starter for Milwaukee if we played a 5-man rotation, but we play 4 to have at least one more starter when needed to eat up innings. We give them half their SR if they come in for long relief, and he threw 3.1 scoreless innings for the win as the Brewers pulled away for a 13-4 sweep to complete a 5 games to 1 series win.

In the first game the Brewers hit three 9th inning doubles to rally for a 6-5 win and nudge ahead of the Dodgers for 1st place in our Statis-Pro season.

Pictured is the game being played with the 1978 game board and fast action cards. The Diamondbacks started the season hit.

Seven of our teams are playing close to how they performed last year, but the Brewers and Cubs are playing well above the 2022.record, and the Padres and Reds are playing well below their 2022 record.

Braves beat Much Improved Pirates Cards

Acuna launched a 2-out, 2-run homer in the 8th to make it 6-1 Braves and give the credit for a 3-game sweep even though the much improved Pirates scored in the 9th to make it 6-2.

In the second game the Pirates scored three in the 9th off Braves closer Iglesias to win 4-1.

That still left the Braves with a 4-2 series win and 20-16 overall record, while the Pirates dropped to 14-22. The scoresheet are at the bottom of the blog.

Players updates

First, the Pirates have a lot of players who have improved, and a few that have dropped off. The sert of players who have improved comes first with the projected OPS or ERA first, and then after the dash their actual figure now. In addition to 10 cards that have improved dramatically, they feature two new good cards. Jose Hernandez is a PB 2-7 pitcher, and because he had earned his 2.75 ERA in a pitchers park, he also converts the highest HR number for any Braves player in this series to a deep flyout.

Ji Hwan Bae's standard replacement batting card is not that good - just a 27 for a Home Run, but he brings the highest steal rating, a AAA to the line-up. Complete numbers on all these players can be found on this link.  Also click for the cards for all pitchers, as well as all hitters. For the new cards noted, look at the bottom of the team to pull up the standard replacement pitcher card and just use the PB noted below, then do the same for the standard replacement better card and just adjust the home run range to what is show below.

25 Most Improved MLB Batters and Pitchers

You can click here for a list of all MLB batters and pitchers this year with stats. If they are GREEN you adjust in their favor (in Statis-Pro adjust PB down one for improved batter, and up one for improved pitcher). If they are RED on that sheet then they have not played as well as projected (in Statis-Pro do the reverse, lower PB by 1 for pitchers and for a struggling batter increase the PB against him).

We ran a check for the projected OPS and ERA figures used to create our Statis-Pro Baseball cards before the season against the actual current OPS and ERA. The following are the players who have most exceeded the projections.

Obviously ERA and OPS are not perfect figures, but they are the figures that all baseball fans can grasp and are pretty accurate. ERA was always a good main stat though FIPs is better, and obviously replacing Batting Average as the standard for most of baseball history with OPS was a major breakthrough.

For the batters we kept it simple by limiting it to players with 100 plate appearances. For pitchers, we considered anyone with either 50 innings pitched or 24 appearances to get both starters and relievers.

For game players, you can look at the updated cards for all Statis-Pro batters or Statis-Pro pitchers in those two links, but for the rest of you this might just give some hints as to why some teams are surprises (note three of the four most improved batters play for the Tampa Bay Rays, while a couple of Minnesota Twins starters are among the six most improved pitchers.

Statis-Pro Much Improved and Strong New Pitcher Cards; and 9 Oakland Cards Downgraded

The following are pitchers who have either performed much better or much worse than their card. You can add a PB to any pitcher who has improved a lot, or subtract a PB for anyone who has so far pitched way below their projections. We also add as big pickups anyone who did not have a card but has at least a PB 2-7, or a PB 4-7 in a hitters park so they get to take a home run off a batters park.

While the Pirates have the most improved Statis-Pro pitcher cards on this list with five improved and only one below expectations - the bigger not on this one is that 9 Oakland A's pitchers have pitched much worse than their projected cards and none have exceeded expections. All batters and pitchers to have played this year with notes by which ones were adjusted are listed by team in this google sheet.

A "top HR>Out" means the pitcher is getting his stats pitching in a hitter's park so he turns the top home run number on an opposing batters' card into a fly out, and a "low out>HR means he pitchers in a pitchers' park so the lowest out on an opposing batter's card turns into home run.
