'Glove" Payton & LSU All-American Dominate, But CO & TN Advance

Both LSU 1953 and Oregon State 1990 were added to the Value Add Basketball Game because they had one of the greatest players in the history of basketball - and both delivered in Round of 32 Games.

Bob Pettit scored 29 and grabbed 10 rebounds, but he was the only future NBA player on that LSU team while the Colorado 2021 and their three future NBA players advanced 81-73.

Pettit went onto be NBA Rookie of the Year and then for nine straight years after that was voted one of the top 6 players in the NBA 9 straight seasons including winning the MVP award in 1956 and 1959. He averaged 26 points and 16 rebounds for his entire 11 NBA seasons.

Pomeroy ranked this Colorado team as the 8th best in the country old Value Add Basketball ranking indicated future NBA PG McKinley Wright might be the most valuable player in the country. While they ran into a Florida State in the second round, they had three wins against highly rated UCLA and USC down the stretch. Future NBA players Jabari Walker and Tristan Da Silva did not start yet - and Da Silva was almost a key to a run in 2024 to the Sweet 16 - but I was at courtside for that game and Marquette played an almost perfect game to beat them.

Gary Payton, named "the Glove" for his smothering defense, was right at his average with 26 points and grabbed 5 steals to keep Oregon State close, but Tennessee's Elite 8 2023 team won 78-66 to advance. Oregon never made a run, but Payton was the 2nd player taken in the NBA draft and won an NBA title and was on both the All-NBA and All-Defensive NBA Team 9 times.

Remaining 24 undefeated Value Add Basketball Teams

There are 24 undefeated teams in the Value Add Basketball Game. Two teams already won a past tournament, and we are down to 22 teams left in our tournament of a third batch of great teams. The earliest team still alive is the 1953 LSU team, while a recent UConn team is the top seed and ranked 7th of all-time teams in our game.

Mourning, Mutombo Hold ASU Scoreless for 1st 14 Possessions to Advance

The greatest shock blocking duo in college basketball history help James Harden's 2009 Arizona State squad scoreless their first 14 possessions, and with 11 minutes to go in the game were still flirting with the best defensive game in our history with a 45-28 lead.

The 12-seed Georgetown Hoyas let up a little and Hardin finished with 14 points, but the Hoyas advance to our Sweet 16 65-54.

This freshman 1989 season Alonzo Mourning blocked an incredible 5.0 blocked shots a game and helped the team to a 1-seed and Elite 8 - the first of two times he accomplished all 3 of those things.

Even his teammate the great Dikembe Mutombo couldn't quite match that feat, averaging 4.1 and 4.7 blocks in his top two seasons en route to making the finger wag famous.

In addition to the two legendary shot blockers, the Hoyas featured three other future NBA players in Jaren Jackson, Charles Smith and John Turner. The only NBA-bound teammate Hardin had was Jeff Ayres.

The game took 32 minutes to play. The Hoyas next play Zach Edey and the 2024 Purdue team, the #5 seed.,

The Hoyas Advance.

Westbrook, Collison and Love Blitz Cinderella NC State 84-67

After consecutive games in which the 26-seed Duquesne took the 7-seed Rutgers to overtime and the 25-seed Louisville 1968 stunned 8-seed UNC 1972, it seemed 24-seed 2024 Cinderella NC State might be next for a Value Add Basketball Game upset as well.

However Kevin Love (21 points, 7 rebounds), Darren Collison (15, 5) and Russell Westbrook (also 15,5) would not be surprised like Marquette and Duke were in last year's Sweet 16 and Elite 8 by the Wolfpac and big guy DJ Burns.

Not only does the #9 seed UCLA 2008 advance in the impressive 84-67 win, but they get to play the first big surprise Sweet 16 team in Wes Unseld's Louisville team. Here are the updated all-time top 10 in our game.

On our all-time ratings and game tracker UCLAs impressive win moves them up to 33rd all time with a +5.4, while NC State drops to 181st all time with a -7.8 rating. The rating indicates how many points better or worse than the average great team in the game has played (like www.kenpom.com).

Unseld v. McAdoo All-Time Great Center Match-up by Category

At 6'7, 245 pounds, Wes Unseld was immovable under the basket, and as the greatest outlet passing center in NBA history, had the edge in today's super match-up as a passer and rebounder. However, Bob McAdoo (taller at 6'9 but lighter at 210) has the edge as one of the greatest scoring centers and top half dozen shot blockers of all time.

Result of game added at bottom.

A look at the two Value Add Basketball Game cards for our next all-time tournament game between Louisville 1968 and UNC 1972 shows McAdoo with a better card on 4 items - steals, blocks, shooting and free throw shooting, while Unseld is stronger in another 4 including drawing fouls, rebounding when UNC misses as well as when Louisville misses, and finally passing. The explanation for each category appears below these photos.

Steals - Advantage McAdoo with an excellent steal range for a center of 11-15, compared to rare steals for Unseld at 11-11.

Blocks - Advantage McAdoo as one of a half dozen players in basketball history who not only blocks shots in the whole block range on the opposing center (21-26) but also blocks the shot of any player on the court on either a 32 or 66. The short Unseld is a good but not elite 21-25.

Fouls - both average at 35-36 committing fouls.

Turnovers - both average at 41-43.

Dunk and Adj Dunk - both a strong 51-56 dunking but also -6 on adjusting opponents dunk, so neither will get any automatic dunks or automatic stops in the 51-66 range against each other as those cancel out.

Field Goal Shooting - advantage McAdoo who scores on 1-11 when he gets a chance including a "and 1" on a roll a 1 on the 1-20 die. Unseld scores on 1-9.

Drawing Fouls - Advantage Unseld who draws fouls on a dominant five numbers - 10-14 - which can be the great equalizer since he has a much better chance of getting McAdoo in foul trouble to perhaps force UNC to use a much weaker defensive player like Craig Corson or Bobby Jones or worse yet foul out McAdoo.

Free throw shooting - Advantage McAdoo who makes free throws 80% of the time (1-16 on 20-sided die) while Unseld is 65% (1-13).

Rebounding on Louisville miss - Advantage Unseld whose 19 rebounds a game over 3 years is one of the greatest totals ever and gives him a 1-11 offensive rebounding meaning on an 10 or 20 on the 20-sided die for high rebounder in game goes to Unseld since offense gets the tiebreaker and McAdoo's defensive rebound is also 1-11.

Rebounding on UNC miss - Advantage Unseld whose 1-11 defensive rebounding keeps the rebound against McAdoo's 1-8 offensive rebounding.

Assists - we do not have an actual assist factor on the cards, but it obviously improved every other players' shooting stats, and Unseld was one of the greatest passing centers in history and averaged 3.5 assists per game in the NBA compared to only 1.6 for McAdoo.

And we have an upset in this round. Unseld managed to play through 4 fouls and Louisville upset UNC 71-69 to survive and advance. Here is the scoresheet. UNC with 4 more rebounds but 3 mire turnovers.

Overtime Clash of Eras: Rutgers 1976 Boards vs. Duquesne 3s

If we had played tonight's tournament Value Add Basketball Game as a home game for Rutgers in 1976, they would have won by double digits as expected against last year's Duquesne team. Not only would they have had the normal home edge of being able to flip rolls of 36 and 66 to get a couple of extra calls, but no shots would have counted as 3-pointers since they went undefeated until the Final 4 ten years before college adopted the 3-point line.

Phil Sellers was outrebounding the Duquesne team for much of the game and finished with a dominant 18 rebounds to help Rutgers outrebound Duquesne by one of the most lopsided margins we've ever had in a Value Add game - 48-29.

However, we played on a neutral court, meaning a 3-point line, and it was Jimmy Clark who was the equalizer with 8 steals, and on 5 of them either hit a 3-pointer or dished to team leader Dae Dae Grant for a 3-pointer to constantly bring Duquesne back. Duquesne won the steal battle against a Rutgers team that also had exceptional ball hawks 15-10, and won the three-point battle 9-2.

The clash in styles lead to one of our greatest games ever with 18 lead changes and 10 tie games.

Here is the play by play starting with the 8 possessions (4:35) to play in regulation.

8 possessions to play - With Duquesne leading 63-60, Jake DiMichele has a chance for a back breaker when he is fouled on a 3-point shot. However, as a 60% free throw shooter (1-12 good, 13-20 miss) he only hits the 3rd of 3 freethrows to leave it within reach 64-60.

7 to play - Both teams miss, but Rutgers defense on the glass continues, as James Bailey grabs and offensive rebound and passes to Eddie Jordan, who scores to make it 64-62.

6 to play - Grant and Sellers trade baskets, 66-64 Duquesne.

5 to play - Sellers scores again after a Duquesne miss, 66-66.

4 to play - Duquesne misses, and Mike Dabney scores to give Rutgers the 68-66 lead.

3 to play - Fousseyni Drame hits a 3-pointer, but Dabney hits a bucket to take the lead back for Rutgers 70-69.

2 to play - Both teams come up with stops but Dabney's steal to start the back and forth creates an extra possession (in the final 9 possessions if a guard comes up with a steal, or a forward comes up with a steal on an odd number roll of 11, 13, 15 or 31 then an extra possession is created, or if there is a foul on either team an extra possessions is created.

Extra possession. Both teams comes up with stops, so it is still 70-69 Rutgers.

1 possession to play - Drame draws a foul to create and extra possession, but hits only one of two free throws to pull within 72-70, however Rutgers turns it over.

Extra possession -  David Dixon powers inside for the game tying score to make it 72-72. On Rutgers chance to win it, Bailey misses but Rutgers continues to dominate the board as Sellers and Dabney grab rebounds both both miss follow-ups and finally Dixon grabs the defensive rebound to end regulation tied 72-72 with Duquesne still having a chance to advance with a huge upset after being a 13-point underdog.

Overtime

9 possessions to play - Neither team scores, but another Clark steal creates and extra possession.

Extra possession - Neither team score, but Sellers grabs one of his 18 rebounds and feeds to Dabney, who scores to make it 74-72 Rutgers.

8 possessions to play - both teams turn it over.

7 possessions to play - Clark hits another 3-pointer to make it 75-74 Duquesne, but Jordan scores at the other end to give Rutgers back the 76-75 edge.

6 possessions to play - both teams turn it over.

5 possessions to play - Clark hits his 4th and final three to make it 78-76 Duquesne, but Sellers hits his 5th and final basket to tie it at 78-78.

4 possessions to play - Dabney scores to give Rutgers the 80-78 lead.

3 possessions to play - Clark and Bailey trade baskets to leave Rutgers up 82-80. However,

2 possessions to play - Grant and Dabney trade baskets to make it 84-82 Rutgers.

1 possession to play - Duquesne misses and Bailey grabs the rebound. In order to force another possession, Duquesne uses the "foul or turnover" strategy always used in this possession. Instead of rolling the normal 4 dice (1-8 dice to see which offensive players gets the ball, two 6-sided dice to get an 11-66 defensive roll, and 20-sided die for if there is a shot) on the first three dice are rolled and the result is a foul of the player who gets the ball UNLESS the result of the defensive dice is a steal or turnover - which allows a final trip on a fast break by the defense or a ball thrown out of bounds quickly by the offense for a turnover with enough time for one possession.

The strategy works as a 43 is a turnover by Bailey, in his 41-43 turnover range, and the extra possession is created for Duquesne still trailing 84-82.

Extra possession - Jake DiMichele gets a shot off but just misses on a "12" (a 10-11 would have resulted in him being fouled for two final shots) and Sellers grabs his 18th rebound to seal the 84-82 win.

Rutgers survives and will play the winner of 1953 LSU and 2021 Colorado in the Sweet 16 of this tournament.

Here is the complete box score from one of our best games ever.

Overtime!!!! Rutgers Undefeated Until 1976 Final 4 Vs. 2024 Duquesne

Wow! Update 72-72 after regulation! Left for real marquette game - overtime has to wait!

Next up we will play a game without quite as big a spread.

One of the most underrated teams - the Rutgers 1976 Final 4 squad that also flirted with being an undefeated national champ in the last year of an undefeated national champ in Indiana. True it was lighter competition with the Big East not yet dominating - but four if their starters went onto the NBA. Their fast pace +7 means we use an extra scoresheet to play 51 instead of 44 possessions after starting with the 20-20 tie.

On the other side one of our new teams from the last few years as we tried to add representatives from schools with good runs that did not yet have a school in the game. This Duquesne team won their first  tournament game since the 1960s, and it came as a legit 11-seed in a stunner if BYU that was its 9th straight win including two wins against ranked teams as Dayton was the other victim in the tough A-10. Only a 13-point underdog in our game.

Fab 5 Hold Off Spirited Runs by Stockton's Zags

Michigan's 1993 Fab 5, actually in their sophomore seasons in the Value Add Basketball Game, blitzed 1984 Gonzaga with a 12-0 blitz to start a game but then had to survive spirited runs by John Stockton to advance 73-62. It was the second closer than expected game for the what appears to be one of the best teams of all time - as Dave Collins 1968 Florida State gave them a battle in their first game.

Stockton hit a 3-pointer with 10 minutes left in the game to get the Zags within 54-46, then with 8:54 to play (15 possessions left) stole it, scored and was fouled to gut it to 56-50.

Chris Webber then scored to make it 58-50 and blocked a Stockton shot to keep the 8-point lead, scoring again at the other end to get it back to double digits at 60-50.

The Zags had one more run left. Stockton scored consecutive baskets around the five minute mark to cut it to 64-58, and Michigan missed at the other end. However, Jalen Rose grabbed the offensive rebound and kicked it out to Chris Webber, who drained one of his surprising three 3-pointers of the game to put it away at 67-58 en route to the 73-62 win.

Webber averaged about one 3-pointer a game, and did that again a couple of years later in the NBA when he moved from NBA Center to Power Forward, and both in this college year and that NBA year shot it at better than 33%, but his incredible 68% on 2-pointers is what made him a 1st Team All-American to end his 2-year career en route to being one of the greatest NBA players of all time.

His 9 rebounds combined with Juwan Howard's 10 rebounds spurred the early 12-0 run. Michigan now awaits either the Glove Gary Payton's Oregon State team or the recent Tennessee 2023 team in this tournaments Sweet 16.

This is our third men's tournament. The late Bill Walton's UCLA team beat Michael Jordan's UNC team in our tournament of the first 96 teams we created, then Mario Chalmers Kansas team won the 2nd tournament of the next batch of teams we created before this tournament.
