In a bit of an upset, Marquette's Jim Chones (19 points, 11 rebounds) eventually drew a 5th foul on fellow big man Shaquille O'Neal (23 points, 11 rebounds), but it was too late to rally.
Backup Justin Anderson hit back to back 3-pointers with 15:38 (26 possessions) left to play to turn a 38-33 lead to 44-33 and LSU never looked back. Dean Meminger (29 points) made it look closer with a 3-pointer at the horn to cut the final to 80-74 LSU.
