2022 Title Game UNC-Kansas In Last 2 Games vs. SMU 2017 and Xavier 2023

In our last two Round of 32 Games, the two teams from the 2022 title game - UNC and Kansas - play against two other teams.. Normally two teams that made a Finals would be favorites against two teams who did not make the Final 4 in their seasons - but in this case we rate these last two games as toss-ups.

Click for result of Kansas vs SMU.

Here is how these games both appear toss-ups to us based on the Value Add Basketball Game player cards for the players below.

Unlike 2023 and 2024 when UConn was incredibly dominant and the teams they beat likely could have won the 2022 title - the 2022 season was one of parity. Kansas beat UNC in a thriller for the title, but no team coming out of that season seemed dominant, and the cards seem to indicate Kansas is about average (+0)  among the great teams in the game and UNC seems quite a bit worse (-7) despite their stunning run to the title after a mediocre season.

Kansas featured only three current NBA players, and stunningly this UNC team did not feature anyone currently in the NBA though Leaky Black played a little before going down to the G-League.

By contrast, the SMU 2017 (-2) did lose a heartbreak in a tough 1st round match-up to USC, but their featured four NBA players and had won the American Athletic title with an impressive second straight blowout of the other ranked team - Cincinnati, to come in as a 6-seed for the second time in three seasons - having been ranked in all three. We would rank them a 5-point favorite over UNC 2022 and have them as only a 2-point underdog against the 2022 champs from Kansas.

Meanwhile, Xavier was even more impressive considering they had the biggest injury of the season, with the dominant Zach Freemantle missing the last 15 games of the season during which Xavier made it all the way to the Big East title game and then to the Sweet 16 with just a 6-man rotation. If Freemantle stayed healthy they could have run all the way to the title game in 2023. The way stamina is calculated in the game, Freemantle can play 17 possessions a game - but if you want to play the "what if" game  you could play him for the 31 possessions he was averaging before the injury. We actually rank Xavier as a 2-point favorite over the UNC team from the year before.

Bellinger and Snell Best Free Agents Landed - All Statis-Pro Cards to Land with Teams Shown

We went through the 2024 Statis-Pro players who were free agents when we calculated those sheets, but are not on a team. The are now sorted and with their team on this link to all cards in sheet form.

Below are the players assigned today with some of the columns shown. Here are the pitchers first, in alphabetical order by team. Explaining the columns below:

Jordan Montgomery - now pitches for Arizona (Ari) and is left-handed (L). We recommend he is 3rd in the teams rotation (Rot 3) and has the second best PB rating (2-8). His endurance (SR15) allows him to give up a total of 15 of any of the following before running out of endurance and having his PB reduced for every subsequent allowed - subtract one of the 15 for every hit, hit by pitch and walk (and then a second number reduced for anyone who reaches one of those three ways and then scores) as well as 1 every time he is pitching and the inning ends. His Max IP is 7 - meaning that even if his 15 has not run out he runs out of endurance at the end of the 7th inning. His projected ERA is 3.89.

Jesse Chavez - And Atlanta right-handed reliever, who has the average PB (4-7) and instead of SR has an RR of 3, meaning he can allow only that many before getting tired. While his Max IP is 2, for relievers that is one higher than they usually pitch - they are just allowed to pitch in part of two inning if they come into one inning after runners are on base and conclude it as one of their innings. For relievers we list letters, and the D under Rotation for him means we suggest him as the 4th best reliever.

All these pitchers are now in red on the google sheet.

For the batters we will run through the column for the best free agent card assigned to a team - Cody Bellinger who ended up back with the Cubs. The "4" to the left indicates we suggest hitting him in the No. 4 spot (LU is line-up and 4).  He is a left-handed power hitter (LP) and his sheet gives him the standard platoon of 13/88 meaning he strikes out on 11-13 against a lefty but turns and out into a single on 88 when facing a right-handed pitcher.

He has a strong home run range of 27-33 on the 11-88 random number. All players then have three additional numbers that are DEEP drives that might go out - so we know those are 34-36 on his card. He does not have a ton of walks or hit by pitch - 51-54 and 55 - but does have very good speed at B/B - the first number being for taking and extra base on a hit and the second for stealing a base. His projected OPS is 0.770, and he can play 1st base (1B) or centerfield (CF) and has the best clutch defense of all (CD 5, CD 1 is the worst) and his throwing arm is the best at T5 and commits the fewest errors (E1).

A 10 indicates we do not recommend starting the batter, while a 14 means the player was actually on the team's minor league roster when we checked, but we believe they will play this season.

Montgomery YMCA, VCU Franklin Street Gym and Brushes With Hoops Hero Memories in New Great Teams

A couple of the newest great teams added to the Value AddBasketball Game included a personal connection with a couple of new player cards int he game. We posted pictures of all the new player cards here. We track all scores between our 184 great teams from the reigning UConn champs to the 1943 champs from Wyoming. More than 71,000 unique sports simulation fans have visited the free game.

Mississippi State’s 2005 team that destroyed Stanford in the NCAA tournament before losing to Duke included great 3-point shooter Jamall Edmondson, who was my teammate a few years later when we won the Montgomery YMCA championships. Calvin Duncan from VCU’s 1985 championship team was the star in a win over Steph Curry’s dad and #16 Virginia Tech – a game I watched in person not realizing I was so excited to be there I had left my car running outside the Richmond Coliseum the entire couple of hours.

The reason for the new teams to take us to 184  was a discovery this weekend ...

On the day of the SEC Football Championship that would put Alabama in the football playoffs, I discovered I accidentally did not have all-time great basketball teams in place for four of the SEC schools – both Mississippi schools, Vanderbilt and Texas A&M. My apologies. I double checked again all 80 schools scheduled to have a team in the one of the Power Conferences after the 2024 alignment, and realized I also did not have a Big East Providence team in the game.

Since five is an odd number of teams, I also added the likely the greatest “Mid-Major” team not yet in the game, the 11th ranked VCU squad that won a game in their 3rd straight NCAA tournament in 1985. I put all six teams in a tournament with two teams who had just had card adjustments when the block ranges were adjusted for Wilt Chamberlain and Bill Russell, to form the following 8-team tournament so that all 184 teams will have played a game once we play these four.

Here are the match-ups and we explain what the numbers mean at the bottom of the blog.

Match-ups in our 8-team tournament to try out all my new cards:

1-seed vs. 8-seed

#54/#20 - Kansas - 1957 - Wilt Chamberlain (1-1, ave score 67.5-74.0), Rating 1.2 vs.

#170/#174 - Mississippi St. - 2005 - Lawrence Roberts (0-0) Rating -10.0

While the ratings of +1.2 to -10 indicates Wilt Chamberlain’s 1957 National Runner-up squad would be about and 11-point favorite against the 2005 Mississippi squad, I could see this match-up giving MSU a chance if you could really play the game.

Mississippi State did have two 7-footers in Marcus Campbell and Wesley Morgan, which would let them foul Wilt 10 times to send him to the line where he was human at 62%.

More importantly with Wilt being one of four players in history with the best block range in the game, the 65 and 66 dice rolls reject only 2-point shots, so the fact that Jamall Edmondson has one of the best 3-points made range in the game (1-5 on the 20-sided die) and Winsome Frazier shot a lot more and had almost as good a range (1-4) including hitting 6 of 8 three-pointers to destroy Stanford 93-70 in March Madness you could see them getting hot.

Jamall’s favorite play in our YMCA championship occurred when I cut to the hoop for one of his always perfect passes, but he lobbed the ball too high – I thought … It turned out the lob was actually for one of our other teammates who was a foot above me cutting from the other side for an alley-oop dunk.

As for our 1-seed in this tournament, Wilt was stopped from winning the title by two coaches with Marquette ties. UNC’s Frank McGuire forced  Kansas into turnovers to hold them to only 53 points in a 3-overtime game for the 54-53 win in the 1957 championship game. The next year former Marquette coach Tex Winter used a triple team against Wilt including telling the team all three needed to follow Chamberlain everywhere he went, even (he joked) to the rest room to give K-State a big upset. Back then you had to win your conference to go to the tournament, so that loss in the regular season left #7 ranked Kansas out of the tournament in Wilt’s only other year as K-State went to the Final Four.

The winner of that game will get the winner of our 4-seed vs. 5-seed game:

#85/#74 - Providence - 1987 - Billy Donovan (0-0), Rating -1.0 vs.

#74/#86 - Texas A&M - 2007 - Acie Law   (0-0), Rating -2.0.

Our middle game features an unbelievable offense directed by two of the greatest coaches ever – Rick Pitino and his point guard and future coach Billy Donovan. Their SRS was lower than most great teams in the game, but then they made an incredible Final Four run with one of the best offenses ever.

Texas A&M is almost the opposite, a dominant defense that ground teams down and made every shot tough, and won at least one game in six straight NCAA tournaments as a model of consistency, including this team that went to the Sweet 16.

2-Seed vs 7-Seed

#74/#45 - San Francisco - 1956 - Bill Russell (0-1, ave score 67-74), Rating +1.0 vs.

#113/#146 -  Mississippi - 2002 - Justin Reed (0-0), Rating -6.0.

Wilt’s old foe the great Bill Russell also has one of the four greatest shot-blocking cards and did lose their one Value Add Basketball Game against the great Arizona 2015 team, where they fell short 67-74.

Justin Reed rolled in as a rare 5-star recruit for Mississippi, and in this first freshman season was the go-to guy who took the Rebels to one of only two Sweet 16s in their history and one of only two times they finished the season ranked in the top 20. Reed stayed all four years before going onto the NBA.

The winner of that game faces one of the following two teams, including one I know very well:

3-seed vs 6 Seed

#80/#73 - Vanderbilt - 1993 - Bill McCaffrey (0-0), Rating -1.0 vs.

#125/#135 - VCU - 1985 - Calvin Duncan (0-0), Rating -5.0.

Bill McCaffrey’s transfer from Duke to Vanderbilt as a former McDonald’s All-American ignited an incredible offense that averaged 83 points per game and a Sweet 16 run.  Bill clearly brought great genes to the court as his brother Ed won three Super Bowls with the Broncos.

I grew up a mile from VCU’s court as an avid fan, and years later would once score 31 points in their gym as the state’s Republican legislative aides beat the Democratic legislative aides 52-51 with refs and a scoreboard at Franklin Street Gym.

Calvin Duncan led VCU to opening round wins in three straight NCAA tournaments and gave scares to big conference teams in the second round each year – battling near the end against Georgia, Syracuse and Alabama in consecutive years but falling short of a Sweet 16. It was a lockdown defense and patience offense that held teams to 62 points per game. With all respect to the stunning VCU run under Shaka Smart 25 years later, this was by far the greatest team in VCU history – finishing the season ranked 11th in the country, 12 points ahead of any other VCU team.

In Marquette intramurals I wore a "Cal" jersey, and once checked into the student health center on the way to a game to check out my ankles and knees. I was told to never play basketball again because at 20 years old my knee cartilage was already so worn. I took my crutches, walked five blocks to the gym, laid the crutches by the court and scored 21 points despite not being able to jump on my shots, and picked the crutches up and hobbled back home to throw ice in our tub and am still playing league ball at 58 years old.

VCUs coach JD Barnett focused the team on average points per trip down the court – basically fi 10guring out www.kenpom.com stats 17 years before they were calculated.

They were also ahead of their time with a stretch forward in 6-foot-8 Mike Schlegel who could pop out and hit what would later become a 3-pointer. Point guard Rolando Lamb battled Steph Curry’s dad Del for a win in the game I mentioned above watching without realizing I’d left my keys in the car. VCU closed the regular season by traveling to Memphis and battling them until near the end- a great showing that looked every better when Memphis went to the Final Four.

While no VCU player went to the NBA, Duncan was drafted but chose to join Athletes in Action, a Christian Group that played games to give their testimony at halftime. One NBA exec commented that they knew he was a good guy, but not THAT good. He is the pastor of Faith and Family Church in Richmond, Virginia.

This Sports Illustrated Story calculates Duncan hit 16 of 28 from 3-point range, and recounts him taking it inside to score on 7-foot-4 Ralph Sampson in a narrow 69-63 loss at #1 UVa. Their two points loss to Georgia in the second round on the NCAA was the only close game in Georgia's run to the Final 4 that year.

Explanation for making the cards:

For each match-up we list the team’s current rank among the all-time Value Add Basketball Game teams, followed by the rank based just on where we rank them based on how good their cards are. So Kansas is ranked #54 all-time now after starting 1-1, but we actually rank them as having the #20 best cards in the game.

The “rating” after each team indicates how many points better or worse, we rank the team than the “average” great team. Understand the “average” great team is based on a team that is about +17 points better than the average team and made it to the Elite 8. We start with the SRS (Simple Rating System) based on scores and competition, then adjust up for a team that went past the Elite 8 or subtract for teams that did not make it that far, and we also adjust up for teams that provide thei were legit with multiple tournament runs.

Sharper Statis-Pro Cards Debut in Yankees Blowout of ChiSox

What started as a  simple correction on many of the 2022 Projected Pitcher cards, resulted in much easier to read pitcher cards.

This picture is of the first game using these cards - and if you look closely you will see the new 2022 Projected Pitchers  are much easier to read then the Projected Batters. We play with our 1978 Board and Fast Action Cards, but you can also play for free using this Statis-Pro baseball Game

In this two-game series, the New York Yankees blasted the Chicago White Sox 7-2 and then 5-3. The reason the dueling ace closers Liam Hendriks and Aroides Chapman are both in the game is that we play two game series with each reliever allowed to be used in one of the two games, so this was a use them or lose them. In addition we count a 5-run win as a 3-game sweep - so Hendriks was in to stop the Yankees from winning by five, and Chapman was in to save the win.

Unrelated to the new cards, the White Sox received a huge boost when we checked rosters and added three White Sox pitcher's who did not have cards. We just hand wrote these new additions. For Giolito, we copied his 2021 projected cards, and for Cueto and Lynn we used the standard replacement card for a pitchers with an ERA of 4.01 to 4.59.

To insert the other new pitcher cards for both teams before the series, we laid them out in alphabetical order to replace them for where they were in the rotation or bullpen. You can see the different in how easy it is to read Cole's new card.

Here are all the new pitcher cards for both teams, though some are not currently on the 40-game roster and thus will not be used in our game.

As for the actual results of these first two games with the new pitcher cards, the Yankees have not run away with it like in real baseball, but they are in 2nd in the 10-team league and one game behind the Blue Jays.

Giancarlo Stanton looked like the sure series MVP when he hit a 3-run homer to chase Cueto as part of hits in his first four bats. However leadoff hitter Joe Gallo hit 3 homers after that. Both finished 5 for 9 for the two games. The Yankees are now 22-14, not as good as in real baseball but still just one game behind first place Toronto - and in our league teams do not get to stack up wins against the bottom five teams in the league, since we only include the top 10 teams in the league.

New AL Statis-Pro Cards - 11 New Batters and 8 New Pitchers

The following are the numbers for 11 new Statis-Pro batting cards of AL players that were NOT included in the initial set of 2022 Projected Batters (49 pages, 9 cards to a page) used to play the Statis-Pro baseball Game. These will let you fill in rosters for the 10 teams we are using in our 2022 season (we track our game results here).

Note: All 2022 Projected Batters (49 pages, 9 cards to a page) and All 2022 Projected Pitchers (62 pages, 9 cards to a page) are needed to play the Statis-Pro baseball Game, but we did catch one adjustment to the PB rating of pitchers based on the team on which they played. You can either use this link which has the correct numbers for all the pitcher cards or print out the cards from the link above and then adjust all the pitchers on certain teams by referencing this blog.

The following is a list of 8 new players who were not included in the 2022 Projected Pitchers (62 pages, 9 cards to a page) for the game, but are now either in the starting rotation or the closer.

You can decide which players you want to lose. For example, you could use all 2022 projected batters and pitchers to have a "what if" season to see how the Red Sox would have played with Chris Sale or the Padres would have played with Fernando Tatis for the whole season.

The league rules we play are to check the 40-man roster. In addition to finding the new cards pictured above we also remove cards if the Statis-Pro card is for a player who no longer shows up on the roster. If a player is listed on the roster but on the 60-day DL we leave his card with the team but write "60 day" on him and do not use him until we check the next time and see if he is off.

We do continue to use cards for players who are in the minors or on the shorter injured list (IL-15 or IL-10) as long as they are still on the 40-main roster.

Here is the alphabetical list for every player card for all 10 teams in our league.

9th Sweet 16 Spot: Cousy Shootout with Duke's Dawkins

In our original All-Time March Madness tournament featuring 96 teams, the favored seed dominated with a 62-33 record through UCLA (Bill Walton) defeating UNC (Michael Jordan) in the title game.

However, the new all-time great 30 teams we have created are proving much more balanced, with the favored seed only 2-5 so far. After Kentucky 1948 pulled an overtime upset with all-time great center Groza, the 1950 Holy Cross was led by one of the greatest point guards of all time (Bob Cousy) to a double overtime upset of 1986 Duke.

Cousy's card is for his 1950 tournament team, and the next 13 seasons after that he was an NBA all-star with the Boston Celtics.

This latest games was the all-time individual shootout, with Johnny Dawkins actually hitting a meaningless 3-pointer at the buzzer of the second overtime to leave Duke just short 108-106, but actually give Dawkins the 43-42 edge in total points over Cousy.

Duke had additional near heros with Jay Bilas coming back off the bench after Cousy drew a fifth foul on Dave Henderson. Bilas scored at the end of regulation to tie the score 75-75 and force the 1st overtime. Mark Alarie  dominated the boards with 15 rebounds and put Duke up a couple of times in overtime, and Tommy Amaker did the same with steals to lead fast breaks, but in the end Holy Cross survived and will face another upset winner in the 1982 DePaul team.

Kareem's 1967 UCLA and Battier's 2001 Duke Headline New VABG Cards

The 30 new all-time great teams are now available for the Value Add Basketball Game. You can access the pdf of player cards via this google doc. The two best teams appear to be Kareem's 1967 UCLA team, and Duke's 2001 team, who certainly appear they could be close matches for the two championship teams from our original game and 98 teams

A couple of notes on the new cards, which can still be used against teams in the old cards:

1. We went to a larger point 8 font, to make them easier to read.

2. We added the height and points per game at the top of every card.

3. In addition the Stamina (how many of the 44 game possessions the player can play before getting tired) we went through and gave suggestions on which actual possessions you may choose to use the player. See notes on player rotations and when a player tires below the picture of team cards:

STAMINA CONTINUED:

a. Basic rest rules. To keep it simple, you can simply play the bottom five reserves the first seven possessions of the game - Possessions 44 to 38 - and then play the starters for the last 37 possessions.

b. You can follow the suggestions next to Stamina, in which case UCLA's point guards would include Don Saffer for possessions 44 to 37, Gene Sutherland on possessions 36 to 32, and then starter Mike Warren from possessions 31 to 1. Players with (None) listed by them might just come into a game if someone fouls out or a different mix is needed (a good 3-point shooter perhaps).

c. You are free to substitute players in any order you want for a more advanced game, just keep in mind the reduction in effectiveness if they play too many possessions. If a player is in the game for more possessions than his stamina, then every die roll is adjusted one against him. So if Duke's Matt Christiansen plays a 10th possession then a 13 when he is on defense is changed to a 14 and no longer a steal, or a 15 when trying to score is changed to a 16 and he misses the shot, and a rebound of 2 to him is changed to a 3 and he no longer gets the rebound, etc. If he plays at least twice as many possessions as his stamina (18th possession) then all numbers are adjusted by two.

d. For teams that played at a very high tempo, we also added a line at the bottom of the cards indicating you have the option of adding possessions at the start of the game. Duke 2001 is a +3, so if you use this option you use an extra scoresheet for the first three possessions before going to possession 44. We suggest using all reserves for one-third of extra possessions, which would only be one of three possessions if Duke 2001 was playing - but reserves all played an extra 10 possessions and starters an extra 31 possessions in the 138-116 win by Loyola Marymount 1990 (+26) against Kentucky 1970 (+5).

Greatest Statis-pro game of year kicks off Padres hosting 1st Place LA and MIL

Only those who play the free Statis-Pro Baseball will understand the thrills that went into the plays at the plate, deep drives and other plays that went into the beginning of the Padres season ending home stand against the two 1st place teams - the Dodgers and Brewers.

The game ended on a "37" on Fernando Tatis' card, the first in his strike-out range as a 35 or 36 would have been a DEEP drive and potential game-tying homer to force a 13th inning.

As a result the Dodgers move with a 1/2 game of the Brewers for the crucial first round bye, and the Padres move a half game behind the Reds and Cardinals for the final wild card spot, so would miss the playoffs by a half game if the season ended today (see standings below).

Scherzer pitched a dominant 7.1 innings of four hit ball and left after walking Tatis with the Dodgers leading 2-1. Darvish had fought through a lot more pressure by inducing four double play grounders in the first five innings to keep it close.

Tatis stole and scored on a Machado single, and then Grisham singled. However, the bottom of the 8th inning ended on a Clutch Defensive opportunity for Dodgers SS Seager to determine if a go-ahead single went through the infield, he knocked it down for a and got a force out, or he made a diving catch and doubled the lead runner off. As a Clutch Defense 5 (the highest, 1-5) he made the diving catch to end the inning with the score tied 2-2. This is only fair since in the top of the 8th with Seager at the plate he smashed a ball up the middle that 2nd baseman Frazier (a Clutch Defense 5 traded for from the Pirates) likewise made a diving play) to keep the Dodgers from being ahead.

With Bellinger starting the top of the 10th, Trea Turner singled him to third and then stole second. Betts then beat out a grounder to short to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, and then Betts stole 2nd to put 2nd and 3rd with no outs. However, Adams (PB: 2-9, the best) struck out Muncy and Smith, and then induced a pop foul by Pollock to keep it there.

And then Mookie Betts took over in extra innings. In right field he gunned out the game-winning run at home in both the 10th and 11th inning, first nailing Marisnik trying to score from second on a single and then Machado trying to tag and score on a deep fly ball. Machado would have scored to win the game on an 11-41 (better chance than of getting a 2-out hit), and out at the plate on a 42-88, and Betts drew a 43 to barely beat him.

Bellinger hit a DEEP drive that could have won the games in extras. A deep drive leaves the Padres Stadium on a random number of 11-34, and is a deep flyout on a 35-88. Bellinger drew a 38, out of most parks.

In the 12th he singled Bellinger home, stole second, and scored himself on a Muncy single for the 5-3 win.
