Defense, Speed, Pitching Keys Brewers Advancing to Statis-Pro Semifinals

The Statis-Pro Milwaukee Brewers used five stolen bases, five defensive plays that saved runs, two new PB 4-7 upgrades in the rotation, and a total of FIVE PB 2-8 excellent relievers to beat San Francisco 4-0 then Toronto 6-2 to win Pool E and advance to play Pool D champ Tampa and one team to be determined in a semifinal pool.

Of the 11 batters who played in the two games, five were excellent base stealers (A SP rating) and four more were good base stealers (B). The only defender who is not excellent is shortstop Jett Williams, but both games he reached base early and then pinchrunner David Hamilton came in and then went into shortstop where he is excellent to mean the team always had half gold glover level (Clutch Defense - CD 5) defenders and the other half were very good CD4 defenders.

The only two runs scored agaisnt them in the two games came as result of a walk followed by a home run to let them score with no chance for the defense to make a play.

However, the first two games we played after the trade deadline finalized rosters were a funny start - as Chourio double and scored to make it 1-0 Milwaukee, and then Luis Arraez had singled and Rafael Devers homered to make it 2-1 and none of it counted - because a Z-play came up as the old 21 that states that the skies opened and rained out the game before the first inning was even over - so both starters were lost and and both teams needed to go to their fifth starter. This was good because we then realized that Arraez had not been moved to the Phillies at the trade deadline so that is now fixed.

The following are the three semifinal polls, with the teams in bold already clinched and the teams in italics are teams that are now 2-0 but have not clinched:

Semifinal Pool J - Boston, NY Mets and likely 2-0 LA Dodgers

Semifinal Pool K - Tampa, Milwaukee and likely 2-0 Kansas City

Semifinal Pool L - TBD but the three with 2-0 records are Philadelphia, Arizona and Minnesota

Best teams upset in pools to be eliminated are Braves and Yankees, and Cubs are on the verge at 0-2.

Here are the basic numbers on each Brewers card as shown in the previous blog and what each did during the two games last night as the Brewers clinched.

They are 2-0 and the stunning Kansas City Royals are 2-0 with the St Louis Cardinals at 1-1. The Cubs would need to win both, then have St. Louis beat Kansas City and to have all teams finish 2-2 and then win the run differential tie breaaker.

1st Statis-Pro Playoff Series in the Books - Phils vs Brew Crew

We played 124 Statis-Pro games this season and the average runs scored by each team was 4.7. There were only four 1-0 games of 124, thought the Phillies were involved in one of them when Aaron Nola beat Justin Verlander then of the Mets 1-0.

And yet the average score in our first Statis-Pro playoff series was 2-1 and the series ended with a 1-0 game. Here are the summaries of each of the games as the Brewers faced the Phillies then below the game accounts is a photo of the player cards and the preview.

Game 1 Action

3rd Inning - A pitchers duel between the Brewers only remaining ace (Corbin Burnes PB 2-9) and one of three true Phillies Aces (Zack Wheeler) was broken up by perhaps the worst fielding inning we've ever had in one inning. Brewers catch William Contreras does have the worst fielding ratings in the game (CD1, E3, TC). A TB or TA would have thrown Brandon Marsh out stealing 2nd, but he was safe due to the weak arm. After a walk, Jake Cave laid down a bunt (OBR A or B can do this once a game for a hit) and Contreras threw wildly to first to allow both runners to score and Cave to go to third. Then Contreras CD-1 resulted in a passed ball to score Cave. Phillies 3, Brewers 0 after 2 1/2.

4th Inning - We drew the famous "not me blind one" Z-play 16 to result in Burnes being tossed from the game for arguing. We always use the result presented, meaning him leaving the game, but you can say he was injured instead if you believe that is more realistic. However, a big pick up in Bryse Wilson, who would pitch a scoreless top of the 4th, 5th and 6th to save the Brewers' bullpen and keep them in the game.

6th Inning - Contreras got a little redemption when he scored after a single and Willy Adames driving a 2-run homer to stop Wheeler's shut out. Phillies 3, Brewers 2.

7th Inning - Tyrone Taylor singled and Brice Turang stole second to put the tying run on with no outs. Wheeler still had SR1 left so his PB 2-8 was still in place unless he allowed another runner. As strong as that is, Wheeler has great control but a high 11-25 hits allowed numbers so was vulerable but left in teh game. He struck out both Andrew Monasterio and Joey Wiemer to leave it all up to Christian Yelich. Yelich sent a line drive to center, but Bryson Stott made a diving catch on a "15" despite having the lowest clutch defensive rating at CD-1 to leave the Phillies ahead 3-2. Wheeler leaves with the lead, going 7 innings allowing 2 runs on 6 hits, 6 strikeouts and not quite his normal great control with 3 walks issued.

8th and 9th Inning - Craig Kimbrel and Jose Alvarado each allowed one baserunner in the 8th and 9th, but otherwise shut the door. Kimbrel struck out the side, Alvarado struck out one then induced a game-winning double play.

Final: Phillies 3, Brewers 2 (Phils Lead 1 game to 0)

Game 2 Action

1st Inning - Trea Turner singled and stole second. With two outs Kyle Schwarber just missed a homer with a long double to score him. In the bottom of the inning, Adames (who was 3 of 4 in Game 1 with a homer) hit a DEEP drive also just missing a 2-run homer, but it was caught. Phillies 1, Brewers 0.

3rd Inning - The Brewers put together four singles - Wiemer, Yelich, Contreras and Adames, to take the 2-1 lead. Josh Donaldson then hit a DEEP drive that just missed a 3-run homer but was caught to end the inning. Brewers 2, Phillies 1.

7th Inning - The bottom of the Phillies order greeted reliever Elvin Peguero with a single (Brandon Marsh, who stole second), walk (Bryson Shott) and line drive single (Jake Cave) to load the bases with no outs and lower him to a PB 4-7 (his RR of 3 was reduced by those three baserunners). However, Turner hit a line drive back to Peguero, who because he has the highest defensive rating of all of a Clutch Defense-CD-5 not only caught the ball but threw to 3rd base for a double play based on the chart. Realmuto grounded to first and the Brewers escaped with the 2-1 lead in tact.

Trevor Megell and Devin Williams had a much easier time in the 8th and 9th, getting a hold and save to wrap up the 2-1 win.

Final: Brewers 2, Phillies 1 (Series tied a game a piece)

Game 3 Action

The deciding game. The season ending injury to Brandon Woodruff seemed to most impact this third game, where the Phillies had a third great pitching card in Michael Lorenzen, but the Brewers had to go with a PB 2-6 in lefty control pitcher Wade Miley with everyone moved up a spot.

6th inning - However, Miley matched Lorenzen's ZEROS for 5.2 innings. Then JT Realmuto hit a 2-out double. Bryce Harper followed with a line drive to right, which lowers the range of going from 2nd to home by 20 - but with Realmuto having the best OBR (A) and right fielder Jesse Winkler having the weakest arm (T2) the go ahead run scored. Phillies 1, Brewers 0.

Lorenzen finished six scoreless innings, only striking out three while walking three, but just two hits.

Both bullpens did their job, with three scoreless innings each. The final inning was between two PB2-9 closer who both give up very few hits but both are a little wild. The Phillies drew two walks off Devin Williams but he got the next three to keep it 1-0 and give the Brewers one last chance.

The Phils Jose Alvarado went 1-2-3, with the only excitement being a game-ending grounder to short that Trea Turner bobbled. He has always been a weak fielder though he improved on note this season to a CD-2, E5, and in fact the the card did call for an error if the card had an E7 or higher.

Final: Phillies 1, Brewers 0 (Phillies Win Series 2-1)

Preview Below

One of our Statis-Pro wild series are between the two teams that made our playoffs but not the real playoffs (Cubs vs Giants). However, first we are playing out two wild card teams that were also wild card teams in the real season as the Phillies visit the Brewers.

The two teams with Byes were the same Braves and Dodgers.

Here are photos of the Brewers and Phillies lineups. Results will be added.

Results will be added as we play.

Ohtani Statis-Pro Cards Debut vs Milwaukee ace Burnes

A major motivation for including some of the relegated AL teams to complete NL Statis-Pro schedules was to get to use Shohei Ohtani's batting and pitching card. For each relegated AL team, we are having them play two NL opponents in two games each to go through their 4-man pitching rotation.

Here are the Los Angeles Angels four games:

Milwaukee Brewers at LA Angels - Angel Stadium is a great home run park at 11-54 (55-88 deep fly out) and both teams will start their aces. The Brewers Corbin Burns faces Shohei Ohtani in a match-up of two of the only PB 2-9 starting pitchers in the game.

LA Angels at Milwaukee - American Family Field is exactly average 11-35 home run. The No. 4 pitcher in each rotation will pitch with former White Sox Lucas Giolito for the Angels against Eric Lauer.

LA Angels at Arizona Diamondbacks - Chase Field 11-43 good hitters park. The Angels No. 2 pitcher Tyler Anderson vs. DBacks No. 2 pitcher Andrew Chafin - a lefty and thus Brandon Drury will start at third base for the Angels.

Arizona at LA Angels - No. 3 pitcher Patrick Sandoval at Tommy Henry.

Playing the Angels also means getting to use Mike Trout's batting card to add a line-up that suffered injuries but added three Colorado Rockies sluggers.

In addition to adding Giolito the Angels also attained their new closer in our game, Reynaldo Lopez. Still only a PB 2-7 for a weak bull pen. However, because the Angels pitchers need to pitch in such a pitchers park, each of them turn the highest home run number on the opposing batters card into an out.

Game 2 - the Brewers jumped all over the Angels with 6 runs in the 1st, but needed Devin Williams in the 9th for a 6-5 win and split. They stay in 3rd place behind the Dodgers and Braves in our Statis-Pro league.

16-Game NL Statis-Pro Summary: Giants Beat Marlins; Face Brewers

Our NL Statis-Pro season hits the 16-game mark season - four times through each 4-man rotation - with our upcoming San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaukee Brewers 2-game series. The link to all player cards and the game is at the bottom of this blog.

We include the box scores and line-ups for the Gants big 7-5 and 5-4 win over the Marlins, both reflected in this tracker of our games. Under our system in which each game counts as three games, won 3 games to 0 only if a team wins by 5 runs or more, the Marlins hit the mark at 26-22 for fourth place in our game - behind the Braves, Dodgers and Brewers in our overall standings.

Game 2123456789 RH     E
San Fran002100011 5102
Miami100020001 480

The Giants and Marlins were originally relegated (the Cardinals, Pirates, Rockies and Nationals still are to leave an 11-team league). Therefore we had to play all 16 games for both teams to catchup to the other nine teams at the 16-game mark.

Starting Pitcher Rotations: To make sure we can always play teams against each other even when one has played more games and at a different part of their rotation, we play all 2-game series and pitch either the No. 1 and No. 4 pitchers in the rotation, or the No. 2 and No. 3 pitchers neither team has a big disadvantage like they would if a series were to set up a No. 1 and No. 2 for one team, and No. 3 and No. 4 for the opponent.

Reliever Pitcher Usage: We also want each team to go in with the bullpen rested so one team doesn't have an advantage. Therefore each team can use each of their relievers in one but not both of their games in a 2-game series. Most relievers have an SR/RR: 0/3 and Max IP 2 on their card. In Statis-Pro the "3" means in relief they start with 3 endurance, and any time an inning ends, or they allow a player to reach base other than an error, or an earned run scores, then the endurance drops one. The "Max 2" means the pitcher can go part of 2 innings, but we normally have them pitch only 1 inning each unless they come in to get out of a jam in one inning and then stay on for another inning. However, this is dangerous because if they allow even a single runner, then the inning ends, they have dropped from RR 3 to RR 1 going into their one full inning. One more runner in their full inning and their endurance would already be out and their PB would drop by one (e.g. from a PB 2-8 to a PB 2-7) and continue to drop for any of the items listed above.

San Francisco Giants 2-game Box Score

Below is the combined box score for the Giants' batters in the two games against the Marlins. As noted in the line score above, the Giants trailed 4-0 in the first game until a th inning homer by JD Davis and then a game-winning 8th inning homer by Michael Conforto for the 7-5 win. In the second game Davis homered again, offsetting an error (he is a poor fielding third baseman with an E6, CD-1) to allow two unearned runs in the 5-4 win.

The Giants 20-22 mark going into the Brewers series is much better than last year's record, the last stats factored into the projected player cards, and but not as good as this year's incredible season.

In the first game ace Alex Cobb pitched four no-hit innings, but was hit hard in the fifth inning and the bull pen needed to be strong to get the win. In the second game Alex Wood pitched well, but two fifth inning errors allowed two unearned runs and he ran out of endurance in the prolonged 5th inning.  Tylor Rogers (not the same pitcher as Taylor Rogers who saved the first game), did give up a homer to Jazz Chisholm Jr to allow the Marlins within 5-4  but then held on.

In facing the Brewers in the next series, a PB 2-8 righty Logan Webb will pitch the first game, then lefty Sean Manaea, who is not as dominant as some past years at PB 4-7.

The following are the Marlins stats for the 2-games. Note that unlike the Giants, their line-up did vary during the two games since the Giants threw a lefty and a righty in the two games. Under "order" you see Chisholm has a "1" and hit first both games, but then Jorge Soler's "3/2" means he batted 3rd against the lefty Alex Wood but 2nd against the righty (right of the slash) Alex Cobb.

On the pitching front, last year's Cy Young Award Winner Sandy Alcantara carried the lead and looked save until Drew's homer, but did not get the win after Tanner Scott gave up Conforto's homer.  The second game featured our first use of the new PB 2-7 card for rookie Eury Perez, who has been the best Marlins pitcher based purely on ERA, but does not have the endurance of Alcantara, who has a rare "Max 8 IP" in the modern game.

Milwaukee Brewers Line-up for Giants Series

Note that the Brewers also rotated a couple of players based on if they hit lefties or righties better, but the line-up does not change - just the order.

The Brewers received three good batters in trades before the deadline, but the only one to crack the Statis-Pro starting line-up is 1st baseman Carlos Santana. He is both a much better 1st baseman than Rowdy Tellez, letting Tellez move to DH, but also kills left-handed pitching so we will bat him 3rd against Manaea while he will hit 6th in the opener.

While we have all 11-teams in one league rather than divisions, the Brewers are among the same three Division Leaders form real MLB in our Statis-Pro Standings (with the Braves and Dodgers).

Greatest Statis-pro game of year kicks off Padres hosting 1st Place LA and MIL

Only those who play the free Statis-Pro Baseball will understand the thrills that went into the plays at the plate, deep drives and other plays that went into the beginning of the Padres season ending home stand against the two 1st place teams - the Dodgers and Brewers.

The game ended on a "37" on Fernando Tatis' card, the first in his strike-out range as a 35 or 36 would have been a DEEP drive and potential game-tying homer to force a 13th inning.

As a result the Dodgers move with a 1/2 game of the Brewers for the crucial first round bye, and the Padres move a half game behind the Reds and Cardinals for the final wild card spot, so would miss the playoffs by a half game if the season ended today (see standings below).

Scherzer pitched a dominant 7.1 innings of four hit ball and left after walking Tatis with the Dodgers leading 2-1. Darvish had fought through a lot more pressure by inducing four double play grounders in the first five innings to keep it close.

Tatis stole and scored on a Machado single, and then Grisham singled. However, the bottom of the 8th inning ended on a Clutch Defensive opportunity for Dodgers SS Seager to determine if a go-ahead single went through the infield, he knocked it down for a and got a force out, or he made a diving catch and doubled the lead runner off. As a Clutch Defense 5 (the highest, 1-5) he made the diving catch to end the inning with the score tied 2-2. This is only fair since in the top of the 8th with Seager at the plate he smashed a ball up the middle that 2nd baseman Frazier (a Clutch Defense 5 traded for from the Pirates) likewise made a diving play) to keep the Dodgers from being ahead.

With Bellinger starting the top of the 10th, Trea Turner singled him to third and then stole second. Betts then beat out a grounder to short to give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead, and then Betts stole 2nd to put 2nd and 3rd with no outs. However, Adams (PB: 2-9, the best) struck out Muncy and Smith, and then induced a pop foul by Pollock to keep it there.

And then Mookie Betts took over in extra innings. In right field he gunned out the game-winning run at home in both the 10th and 11th inning, first nailing Marisnik trying to score from second on a single and then Machado trying to tag and score on a deep fly ball. Machado would have scored to win the game on an 11-41 (better chance than of getting a 2-out hit), and out at the plate on a 42-88, and Betts drew a 43 to barely beat him.

Bellinger hit a DEEP drive that could have won the games in extras. A deep drive leaves the Padres Stadium on a random number of 11-34, and is a deep flyout on a 35-88. Bellinger drew a 38, out of most parks.

In the 12th he singled Bellinger home, stole second, and scored himself on a Muncy single for the 5-3 win.

Statis-Pro Baseball Wrap 5 Series Left - And Links if You Want to Play

With the Major League Baseball pennant races heating up, you can catch up on rosters or play your own Statis-Pro mini season to see how the season stacks up. We are in the stretch run for our seasons with the NL season being played out of Alabama and the AL season by my best friend in Montana (we first rotated Statis-Pro leagues in 1980).  We track our league bracket on this google sheet, and included a snap shot of the grid of games played and still remaining through the playoffs.

In addition to listing our Statis-Pro standings here at the 78-game mark, we compared each team to their actual record at the 78-game mark of the MLB season. Washington and Cincinnati have the exact same records they had after 78 games this season, Chicago and Milwaukee are one game better in Statis-Pro, making 4 of 10 teams within one game of their actual record. Four more teams are within 3 to 5 games of their actual record at the 78-game mark. That leaves only two of 10 that have been quite a bit different, with the Padres 7 games worse in Statis-Pro then their actual 78-game mark, and the Giants (the team that has shocked everyone) are 12 games worse in Statis-Pro then their actual season, so two of 10 outliers. We have found our rule about counting blowouts as 3-game sweeps and other wins as two games to one sweep makes the record more accurate when playing shorter seasons, since a team has a 14% chance of sweeping a 3-game series and a 14% chance of winning by at least 5 runs (see league rule below), but this is purely our fun rule and you do not need to play it in your games.

The following runs through the league rules we use, but none of these are mandatory.

·         We play using the Statis-Pro 2021 Projected Cards and rules on that same link.

·         Change cards if they change teams, and use all players unless they on on 60 day DL or missing 2 months.

·         Adjust any batters here or pitchers here for players who had huge changes in OPS or ERA from the projections on which the Statis-Pro cards were based.

·         Pick 4 starting pitchers (list as A, B, C, D) and try to match the same place in the rotation for two teams playing, but if the two teams have played a different number of games then you can pitch the A & D starter for one team vs. the other team's B & C starter.

·         All 2-game series, and each reliever can pitch 1 of 2 games in each series.

·         The Montana league (NL this year) counts each game as a typical game.

·         The Alabama league (AL this year) plays each game counts as a 3 game series with wins awarded:

·         Typically the winning team is credited with winning 2 games to 1 for that game, but sweeps if both:

o   Winning team was ahead by at least 5 runs at the end of the 8th inning.

o   Winning team also did not use the card for whichever reliever card had the best ERA in the 1st 8 innings.

·         We played a couple of interleague series earlier in the year, but changed them to exhibitions for balanced schedules.

·         This year we had time for all 15 NL teams to play the other 14 teams in one two game series each.

·         We relegated 5 teams and broke the other 10 into 2 divisions, so each team can play each division foe again.

·         At that point each remaining NL team will have completed 18 two-game series, counting as 108 games.
