Easier to read print and play Statis-Pro team with updated 40-man rosters

All Statis-Pro sheets are now organized batters, fielders then pitchers for each team. Click here for the Statis-Pro cards for all 30 teams then print any two teams and follow instructions in the free Statis-Pro baseball game. If a players has an "add HR" or "minus HR" you only adjust the Home Run Range, then the next three numbers from that are the DEEP numbers and the next number is the new beginning of the strikeout range. Do not change the end of the strikeout range.

Murray Slugs Orioles to 2nd Place Behind Maddux' Braves; Marlins Rally Falls Short

Devon White came to the plate as the go-ahead run in the top of the 9th inning, already having three hits including a double, but reliever Don Maragiello escaped by catching him looking for a 6-4 win.

The 1983 Baltimore Orioles hero was Eddie Murray, who went three for four with a home run, a hard singled that skipped past the 1997 Florida Marlins Gary Sheffield, and an RBO single. Cal Ripken hit a deep drive that was caught at the wall. With teams averaging fewer than 3 runs a game in games between ace pitchers, this game was different with 21 total hits. When No. 4 starters have faced each other, teams average more than the all-time 4.5 runs per game in MLB history, but when great pitchers face great batters we would expect pitchers to have the edge in these Statis-Pro baseball games since they action starts on their cards, we'd expect it to be about 50-50 in Strat-o-Matic where it is is exactly 50-50 and we'd expect batters to have the edge in APBA where the action is usually based on the batter's card.

For second game in a row a player was ejected, and this time it actually seemed very logical. The Orioles had jumped on the sometimes hot-headed Kevin Brown in the 4th inning for Murray's home, then a walk by John Lowenstein and then and RBI double by Jim Dwyer, which led to Brown arguing and being ejected. Livan Hernandez did get MVP in the 1997 season with playoff dominance, but Brown was even better during the season hand has a slightly better card.

Mike Boddicker, with one of the greatest curve balls in history, was tagged for 8 hits in 7 innings pitched, including a leadoff single. He left after a lead off single in the 8th, but ace reliever Tippy Martinez ran out of endurance after allowing a 9th inning double by Cliff Johnson and then RBI single to Jeff Conine to make it 6-3.

Needing only one out for the save Morogiello then allowed the 8th and 9th batters to reach, a walk by Kurt Abbott then RBI single by Edgar Renteria - who like Ripken had just missed a home run on a deep drive earlier, before finally catching lead off hitter White looking to escape with a very shake save and 6-4 win.

The 1995 Atlanta Braves are the only team in the South that is already 2-0, but the 1-0 mark and 2-plus margin puts these 1983 Orioles in 2nd place in the South.

Bellinger and Snell Best Free Agents Landed - All Statis-Pro Cards to Land with Teams Shown

We went through the 2024 Statis-Pro players who were free agents when we calculated those sheets, but are not on a team. The are now sorted and with their team on this link to all cards in sheet form.

Below are the players assigned today with some of the columns shown. Here are the pitchers first, in alphabetical order by team. Explaining the columns below:

Jordan Montgomery - now pitches for Arizona (Ari) and is left-handed (L). We recommend he is 3rd in the teams rotation (Rot 3) and has the second best PB rating (2-8). His endurance (SR15) allows him to give up a total of 15 of any of the following before running out of endurance and having his PB reduced for every subsequent allowed - subtract one of the 15 for every hit, hit by pitch and walk (and then a second number reduced for anyone who reaches one of those three ways and then scores) as well as 1 every time he is pitching and the inning ends. His Max IP is 7 - meaning that even if his 15 has not run out he runs out of endurance at the end of the 7th inning. His projected ERA is 3.89.

Jesse Chavez - And Atlanta right-handed reliever, who has the average PB (4-7) and instead of SR has an RR of 3, meaning he can allow only that many before getting tired. While his Max IP is 2, for relievers that is one higher than they usually pitch - they are just allowed to pitch in part of two inning if they come into one inning after runners are on base and conclude it as one of their innings. For relievers we list letters, and the D under Rotation for him means we suggest him as the 4th best reliever.

All these pitchers are now in red on the google sheet.

For the batters we will run through the column for the best free agent card assigned to a team - Cody Bellinger who ended up back with the Cubs. The "4" to the left indicates we suggest hitting him in the No. 4 spot (LU is line-up and 4).  He is a left-handed power hitter (LP) and his sheet gives him the standard platoon of 13/88 meaning he strikes out on 11-13 against a lefty but turns and out into a single on 88 when facing a right-handed pitcher.

He has a strong home run range of 27-33 on the 11-88 random number. All players then have three additional numbers that are DEEP drives that might go out - so we know those are 34-36 on his card. He does not have a ton of walks or hit by pitch - 51-54 and 55 - but does have very good speed at B/B - the first number being for taking and extra base on a hit and the second for stealing a base. His projected OPS is 0.770, and he can play 1st base (1B) or centerfield (CF) and has the best clutch defense of all (CD 5, CD 1 is the worst) and his throwing arm is the best at T5 and commits the fewest errors (E1).

A 10 indicates we do not recommend starting the batter, while a 14 means the player was actually on the team's minor league roster when we checked, but we believe they will play this season.

Last Statis-Pro World Series Finale So Similar to Real World Series

Sometimes our actual jobs get in the way and we just don't have time for board games, but we finally did finish up the Statis-Pro World Series.

In the actual World Series the Texas Rangers tied the Houston Astros in the regular season atop the AL West standings, but lost the tie-breaker for a bye, then beat them in a 7-game AL Championships and then won World Series. In the Statis-Pro season it was the Astros who took the AL and then won the World Series in a come-from-behind Game 7 (see below).

In the actual NL the Arizona Diamondbacks beat out the Chicago Cubs by one game for the last wildcard spot, then went all the way to the World Series. What might have been if the Cubs had won one more game, as in Statis-Pro they made the surprise run from wild card to the World Series before losing to the Astros. The box score of Game 7 is below.

Since going to the 6-team league playoff format the last two years, the average World Series contender has gotten there despite winning only 0.566 percent of their games. Our joke now is that the Statis-Pro World Series is more accurate than the real World Series because the top teams do not suffer from "rust" while waiting for the 3-game wild card series before they can get back on the field.

As the chart shows at the bottom of this blog, the average Statis-Pro World Series participant has had a 0.602 winning percentage in the actual MLB season in which they made the Statis-Pro World Series, and those teams have also had a 0.587 winning percentage the season before - important because the Statis-Pro rosters are the same as the current MLB roster, but the cards are derived from stats either completely or mostly based on the previous season stats.

In other words, Statis-Pro is more likely to produce a better regular season champion than the actual current MLB Playoff system where the four best teams have to wait several days between games.

Here is the decisive Game 7, followed by a list of our Statis-Pro World Series matchups over the years:

As in most games in this Statis-Pro World Series, the Cubs jumped on top. Patrick Wisdom launched a solo home run and then two batters later Ian Happ smacked a 2-run homer.

Chicago took another 3-0 lead.

At a time in which small ball is returning due to the bases being closer together to enable more advancing on the bases, a sacrifice fly RBI (Altuve) and an RBI groundout (Tucker) helped the Astros fight back to within 3-2 after six innings.

Next, it was time for the Cubs’ bullpen to crack, Brandon Hughes surrendered the big 2-run blast to Kyle Tucker.  Houston added an insurance run, while the bullpen held on for the 5-3 win.

Astros are champs again!

And here is the history of Statis-Pro World Series champs.

Cubs Win! Advance to Face Statis-Pro Dodgers

While the Texas Rangers were winning a thrilling Game 1 of the World Series with a game-tying homer in the 9th and game-winning homer in the 11th, the Cubs were winning the opening series in your "what if" Statis-Pro playoff and will now face the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Braves will play the Phillies in the other series, and the Astros have already won the AL Statis-Pro.

In actual MLB it was the Diamondbacks who made the playoffs by 1 game over the Cubs and are now in the World Series while in Statis-Pro it was the DBacks who missed the playoffs by one game and the Cubs trying to make the same run.

Joc Pederson homered off Jason Steele in the first inning to give the Giants a 1-0 lead, but Steele did not allow another baserunner in seven innings and the Giants hit only 0.145 in the entire two game sweep.

Webb, the first of two PB 2-8 starters for the Giants, made the 1-0 lead hold up until Cody Bellinger tied it with an RBI triple and then scored on a Dansby Swanson single to make it 2-1. In the eighth Seija Suzuki singled and Ian Happ doubled him home and the 3-1 lead held up.

The Cubs then pounded the Giants second PB 2-8 pitcher Cobb for five runs as the 2-3-4 hitters (Bellinger-Suzuki-Happ) combined for an incredible 12 of 25 including four stolen bases and a homer in a 7-2 win to sweep.  It was 5-0 when they chased Cobb in the top of the 5th inning.

Urias Suspended as Statis-Pro and MLB Playoffs Aligned Except for Cubs (in actual MLB) and Giants (in actual Statis-Pro)

The suspension of Julio Urias hurts the Dodgers Statis-Pro rotation, where he was the No. 2 starter as part of our only 4-man rotation of PB 2-8 starters. They still have two PB 2-8 starters going for their series with the Twins with Tony Gonsolin and Bobby Miller moving up from No. 3 and 4 to No. 2 and 3. However, in the next series against the Phillies it will hurt as Lance Lynn, only an average PB 4-7, will step into the No. 4 slot against the Phillies.

In our league, we use player cards unless a player is put on the 60-day DL, is dropped from the 40-man roster, or is unlikely to pitch again during the actual MLB season. Reports today are that Urias is not predicted to pitch again this year. All of our pitching match-ups for our last 13 series are listed below. The series do not need to be played in order, and it is fine if one team has played more games than another and is in a different part of their rotation since in such a case the match-up is still balanced because one team could be starting their 1st and 4th best pitcher while the other could be starting their 2nd and 3rd best pitcher.

The Urias suspension gives the Phillies a shot at our playoffs, with a better chance for a win in that game to follow the drubbing of the Marlins put our Statis-Pro standings in very close alignment with the actual Major League Baseball standings as most of our teams are through 60 of their 72 game season. The Padres were relegated after 48 games for missing the .400 mark, leaving nine Statis-Pro teams competing for six playoff spots.

If both playoffs started today, we would have the same two byes in Statis-Pro and the MLB season (Braves and Dodgers) and three of the same four wildcard series (only the Giants would be in our Statis-Pro playoffs while the Cubs would be in the actual MLB playoffs).  The four teams in bold still have one series to finish their fifth time through their 4-man rotation. After that, each team has two more series, counting as 12 games total and going through their 4-man rotation one last time before our playoffs.

Teams' winning percentages average about .025 overall in our Statis-Pro season because they do not play the relegated teams as often as during the actual Major League system. From among our three .500 teams now, the Giants get the top (5th) spot due to being 9-3 against the Phillies and Marlins, then the Phillies get the 6th spot because of sweeping the Marlins. The Phillies do have to face the Brewers and Dodgers their last two series.

The Marlins challenge is I accidentally used up excellent rookie Perez' last start against the Phillies, meaning a much weaker Cueto card will need to start twice in the last four games. The Giants series against the Diamondbacks is obviously key.

Dodgers Get 1st 5 of 6 Game Series vs Cards

In Statis-Pro Baseball, Clayton Kershaw and relievers Alex Vesia and Brusdar Graterol combined on a 1-0 win, then JD Martinez slugged the Dodgers to a 14-0 sweep in the nightcap.

The three Dodgers' pitchers in the opening game were all PB 2-8 (the second best, only make mistakes batters can try to drive for extra base hits on 9-12 dice rolls or cards - or only 10 of 36 rolls are mistakes).

Mookie Betts opened the game with a double. Because a lefty was pitching against the Dodgers, JD Martinez was hitting second and he singled in Betts to make it 1-0 after two batters, and no one scored again. In the 9th, the Cardinals Luke Williams pinch ran after a lead off single, but catcher Will Smith did not let him steal second. On the first attempt a "57" on the 2023 revised steal chart changed from a caught stealing to the runner simply not being able to get a jump to steal. In the game you can only attempt a steal once per batter, so after an out Williams attempted to steal second again and the 11-88 result this time was a "48," which is caught stealing even on the 2023 chart.

That was  2 games to 1 win credit for the Dodgers to increase their record in our game to 10-5 while the Cardinals were 8-7.

The second game the Dodgers easily passed the threshold to get credit for a 3 games to 0 sweep by winning after a leading by more than 5 runs at the end of the 8th inning without using their top reliever. in this game. The No. 3 reliever Dakota Hudson was the top available reliever in the second game since Vesia and Graterol both pitched in the first game, and our rule is that each reliever can pitch in one game every two game series. Therefore the top "available" reliever in the second game is the one who cannot pitch until the 9th for the team to qualify for a 3 games to 0 sweep.

The Dodgers pounded out a 14-0 win by outhitting the Cardinals 15-1. The number 9 hitter for the game was Michael Busch, who started against the lefty pitcher, and hit 2-run homers his first two at bats. Note, we use players on the 40-man roster who are projected to play this season, even in a case like Busch where he has not had his MLB debut yet but has an OPS right around 1.000 in Triple A now and certainly good enough to play at MLB level this year but able to get a lot more at bats in the minors right now.

The credit for the sweep put the Dodgers in first at 13-5 ahead of the Braves, and dropped the Cardinals to 8-10.

Since we use Statis-Pro cards based on the 2023 projections, some of our seasons come closer to a team's previous year performance since that has the heaviest impact on projections, while other seasons are close to the current season due to roster changes. In this early season, the best NL team of last year - the Dodgers who went 111-51 - have the best record and the team tied for the best record this year - the Braves at 14-6 - have the second best record. The disappointment so far in our season has been the Milwaukee Brewers who are just 8-10 but are actually tied with the Braves for best record this MLB season though they were not that good last season and this is still a very small Statis-Pro sample of games.

You may notice this season that our blogs are picked up by https://www.baseball-reference.com/ so when a player is mentioned you can link for their stats by clicking. The reference to our league rule in which we count each game as a 3-game series, which is only a sweep if the winning team led by more than 5 runs after 8 innings, is not necessary to the game - just a fun rule that makes it more likely better teams will win as many games as they would if you could play more games because run differential predicts future results, and teams have a 14% chance of winning by 5 runs and a 14% chance of sweeping a 3-game series.

Statis-Pro Actual Cards Complete (106 pages - Aaron Judge as example)

Happy Easter to all my fellow Christians and good cheer to the rest of you!

Click here for all 2023 Batters's cards. This is a google doc, and if you do not use google docs feel free to simply email me at pudnerjohn@gmail.com and I will send the same file to you in word or PDF. It is 106 pages to print, with 9 players to a sheet.

There are three sheets of paper for each team, and if you do not see a player they may be at the bottom as "Free agents," like the teams in alphabetical order, but if you still do not see a card for a player then go to the last page and pick the card with the OPS closest to the missing player.

Here is one page of the Yankees as an example, with Aaron Judge and his 24-33 Home Run range (not to mention any he adds on Deep Drives) and 58-68 walk range.

Click here for the pitchers' cards, and for those of you new to Statis-Pro Baseball, here are directions and all you need to play Statis-Pro Baseball for free - all free though once you start playing you may find buying a Fast Action Card deck from someone on-line really makes the game flow even better.

Note on Free Agents and Replacement Cards (see below) -Most of the free agent pickups are already reflected in the cards, but a few exceptions: Frenchy Cordero is with Baltimore in the game but ended up with the Yankees, Four cards with the free agents  are now with teams - David Peralta (LAD), Donaovan Solano (MIN), Jurickson Profar (COL) and Robbie Grossman (TEX). Two players for which we did not project a card ended up with teams - AJ Pollock (SEA) and Nelson Cruz (SD). Since we do not have a card, we go to the last page and pick the range with the projected OPS (between .700 and .750 for both of them) and since they are both projected to have just a couple of steals they both get a OBR/SP of D/D. We have circled this.
