14 NBA Players in KS 2008 vs KY 2012; Seattle's Elgin Baylor 32.5 ppt vs. Walkup's SFA

After Michael Jordan's UNC shocked repeat champs from 1962, Cincinnati, our All-Time NCAA Elite 8 and All-Time non-power conference NIT Elite 8 will both be half full after our next NIT-NCAA Value Add Basketball Game double header.

The Kansas 2008 vs. Kentucky 2012 NCAA All-Time Sweet 16 game will feature seven future NBA players on each team. The NIT games normally do not feature any all-time great players, but the next NIT game features one of the greatest 75 players of all time in Elgin Baylor, who averaged 32.5 points per game for Seattle 1958. Their opponent Stephen F. Austin features the star more typical of non-power conferences, the great Thomas Walkup, who talked about choosing to be a star in Europe in this story that includes video of just how close they came in 2016 to pulling off a second straight upset to go Sweet 16.

NIT update: Elgin Baylor scored 29 points, but our top ranked Value Add player of 2016 - Thomas Walkup, matched the 29 and got 23 from 3-point specialist Demetrious Floyd to let Stephen F. Austin stun Seattle 88-73. They are the 4th Elite 8 team in our small conference NIT tournament.

NCAA update: Anthony Davis and Kentucky 2012 destroyed Kansas 2008, as covered in this blog.

Here are the players for each of the four teams in this match-up with their actual season stats and the two brackets to show the three teams that have already made the two Elite 8s.

Kansas Hoops 2022, 1997 and 2008 All Huge Surprises in All-Time Rankings

Kansas 2022 upset of UConn 1996 to advance to our Elite 8 as the 18-seed continues a trend of Kansas teams being far better than we though when we put together the Value Add Basketball Game card ratings.

We placed Paul Pierce 1997 team as the 17th greatest of all-time, but they won all five tournament games to win our second tournament and shoot up to No .2 all time in our rankings.

We picked Mario Chalmers 2008 national champs as the 51st greatest team of all-time, but they have surged to No. 3 by going 5-1 mainly in Big 12 blowouts.

The 2022 team was 71st in our preseason ranks, but is now all the way up to 37th after the upset of UConn. Here are the top 10.

KS 2022 Holds Off Rally by 'Jesus' from He Got Game and CT 1996

Ray Allen exploded for 30 points to rally 2-seed Connecticut 1996 late from double digits down, but Kansas 2022 national champs held them off for the upset. Allen starred as "Jesus" in the hoops classic He Got Game (not suitable for younger audiences), was the 52nd greatest NBA player ever, then finished with an amazing 3-pointer to bring the Miami Heat back from dead after fans had left to take the title.

Details will be added. Here is the scoresheet and players in the game at the start of the game indicated by coins (dimes get the ball twice as much as pennies).

As the scoresheet shows, Kansas led by double digits until late in the second half with a 63-51.

However Allen and his backcourt mate Sheffield then led a quick 15-8 run to cut it to 5 with 5 minutes to play.

Sheffield and Allen hit 3-pointers and and Sheffield came up with a steal and fed Allen for a fastbreak layup in the middle if that run.

However, UConn then failed two converted on two straight possessions that could have made it a position, and when another Allen 3-pointer in the final seconds finally did cut it to 83-80, UConn had to foul, and Kansas hit both free throws for the 85-80 win to become our first elite 8 team.

2022 Title Game UNC-Kansas In Last 2 Games vs. SMU 2017 and Xavier 2023

In our last two Round of 32 Games, the two teams from the 2022 title game - UNC and Kansas - play against two other teams.. Normally two teams that made a Finals would be favorites against two teams who did not make the Final 4 in their seasons - but in this case we rate these last two games as toss-ups.

Click for result of Kansas vs SMU.

Here is how these games both appear toss-ups to us based on the Value Add Basketball Game player cards for the players below.

Unlike 2023 and 2024 when UConn was incredibly dominant and the teams they beat likely could have won the 2022 title - the 2022 season was one of parity. Kansas beat UNC in a thriller for the title, but no team coming out of that season seemed dominant, and the cards seem to indicate Kansas is about average (+0)  among the great teams in the game and UNC seems quite a bit worse (-7) despite their stunning run to the title after a mediocre season.

Kansas featured only three current NBA players, and stunningly this UNC team did not feature anyone currently in the NBA though Leaky Black played a little before going down to the G-League.

By contrast, the SMU 2017 (-2) did lose a heartbreak in a tough 1st round match-up to USC, but their featured four NBA players and had won the American Athletic title with an impressive second straight blowout of the other ranked team - Cincinnati, to come in as a 6-seed for the second time in three seasons - having been ranked in all three. We would rank them a 5-point favorite over UNC 2022 and have them as only a 2-point underdog against the 2022 champs from Kansas.

Meanwhile, Xavier was even more impressive considering they had the biggest injury of the season, with the dominant Zach Freemantle missing the last 15 games of the season during which Xavier made it all the way to the Big East title game and then to the Sweet 16 with just a 6-man rotation. If Freemantle stayed healthy they could have run all the way to the title game in 2023. The way stamina is calculated in the game, Freemantle can play 17 possessions a game - but if you want to play the "what if" game  you could play him for the 31 possessions he was averaging before the injury. We actually rank Xavier as a 2-point favorite over the UNC team from the year before.

Updated Top 200 Hoops Teams All-time; Updated Links 200 Players

Note - the 200 player links are all new - we were linking only to their NBA stats, but now they are linked to their college careers at basketball reference.

After winning our third Value Add Basketball Game tournament, Western Kentucky's 1966 moves up to 39th in our all time rankings. Based on their cards we started them ranked as the 169th best all-time team. If we used a formula very close to that at www.kenpom.com then they would have moved up, but only to 56th. This is because we basically use Pomeroy's formula (as close as we can replicate it from watching it play out), but we give an extra 4 points for winning a game or subtract 4 when a team loses.

The following updates our rankings of the top 200 all-time teams in our game. We list the three teams to win our tournaments so far, then the other 14 teams still undefeated in our current tournament of mainly newer teams we built, and then the remaining 183 teams who have lost at least one game. We track all game results and rankings here.

The following is the explanation for each header:

Rank - our current ranking for the team, which is adjusted up or down after every game based on if they win or lose, the margin, and the strength of schedule (how tough the opponents have been).

Card - How good we actually believe the team is based on their cards.

Pom - The approximate www.kenpom.com rating, which is the same as Rank except teams do not get an extra 4 points for winning or lose points for losing.

Team.

Year played.

Player - their best known player.

Conference - the Conference they will be in for the 2024-25 season under realignment, regardless of the conference they were in at the time. We did use "P12" for both Pac-12 and potential partner Mountain West.

W - wins in our games so far.

L - Losses in our games so far.

Sc - Average points scored in our games so far.

All - Average points allowed in games so far.

SOS- Strength of Schedule, how tough their opponents were.

This month we have had 14,947 unique visitors, the fourth most in the history of the blog, and if we have our sixth straight day of at least 1,000 unique visitors we would break the all-time record with more than one-third of the month to go.
