In such a strange basketball season with Covid-19 stoppages and players missing games, we decided to use the following methodology to determine which 96 teams to include in the 2021 Value Add Basketball Game, our most popular post ever with more than 45,000 visits.
We put teams in order based on how many brackets included them at bracket matrix, whether they were included as a likely or definite conference tournament winner or as an at-large. We put teams who missed that on the list if they were one of the 50 most popular teams according to www.kenpom.com. Therefore we are including Duke and Kentucky among others this year. We also tried to include any team that dominated their conference in the regular season, even if they were upset in the conference tournament.
Based on this basic methodology, the 80 teams listed in the left column below will have player cards and be included in the game. In the right column we list the teams that might be included in the final 16 teams in the game.
Right now, Butler would be the 81st, team, Georgetown the 82nd team, etc. However, the teams listed below the 16 are teams that would not be included, but are still alive in their conference tournament and will be included if they win it. Any time any of these teams pulls an upset and wins their conference tourney in the next three days they bump a team from the 1-16 teams. So if only one of those teams wins the title, then Richmond is the only team bumped out of the game. If two from that list win, then Seton Hall and Richmond are dumped, etc. A total of 16 conferences are represented, so only if all 16 of those conferences produce an upset champion by a team on this list would all 16 teams at the top including Butler be eliminated.
Once we have the teams, it will give you the option of playing a 96-team tournament (32 teams get byes) as we did in our all-time tournament when Bill Walton's UCLA defeated Michael Jordan's UNC in the title game. Or you could replay the actual 68-team NCAA tournament bracket as it is chosen, and then a 16-team NIT as they are playing this year, etc. If you have yet to play the game, everything you need including the all-time player cards and the 2020 player cards is in this link except for four dice.
Every team in the left column will be in the game. Every team in the right that is bolded will be in the game, while any team cross out or with xxx in front of it will not.
