As covered in this earlier blog on the Dodds on Sports 247 Sports site, a teams www.kenpom.com ranking against non-conference teams is a much better indicator of how far they are likely to go in the tournament.
Teams do not face conference foes in the first round of the tournament, and only face conference foes in the second round when a conference has more than eight teams like the SEC this year or the Big East over a decade ago when Marquette finished 9th and 10th in the Big East but also went to the Sweet 16 once playing out of conference.
Conference games in which teams know everything about each other are a completely different type game then a non-conference game. The prime example was two years ago when UConn finished 4th in Big East play but won every non-conference game including the whole tournament by double digits, while Marquette dominated in the Big East with a regular season and tournament title but was very mediocre out of conference with a ranking of 31st and lost the first weekend.
The bracket that will be placed in this blog once finalized will assume that they team with the better ranking to the right of each team.
