Bracket Factoring for Ranking of All 68 Point Guards

This blog will feature a bracket adjusted for one of the most common ways a team pulls or avoids an upset in March Madness - an experienced point guard who creates points with assists and avoids turnovers. In the pressure of the tournament, a steady point guard able to do these two things greatly increases his team's chances of winning and advancing. This list includes 72 point guards because we posted it with UAB still playing for a bid and a few team on the bubble still having a chance at a bid.

Marquette and Purdue benefit from by far the two best point guards in this year's tournament.

Kam Jones edges Braden Smith by assisting on 38.7 percent of his teammates baskets while turning the ball over only 10.7 percent of the time, the second best at protecting the ball of all the point guards in the tournament particularly since he also scores 19.3 points per game in a power conference. Smith is just behind Jones with the highest assist rate of all point guards in the tournament (44.4 percent of teammates baskets) to fall just 1.2 points behind Jones due to turning it over a bit more (17.6 percent of the time he has the ball which is still good for a point guard). Smith also scores 16.1 ppg.

We do not factor for level of competition or points scored by point guards in this ranking. When you factor them in their is a bigger gap between Jones and Smith and the other great guards. Ryan Nembhard is third but a big behind those two as less of a scores (10.4 points per game) and he and the next three behind him do not go up against power conference defenders.

Here are the starting point guards for all 68 teams that will be in the tournament plus a few extra on the bubble.
