Scroll down for your conference in bold to see the rankings of all the all-time great Value Add Basketball Game teams who will be in the conference next year. If a team will be in a conference with fewer than six all-time great teams in our game, then we put them at the bottom to rank "other" great all-time teams.

Here are the all-time rankings by conference of the 200 teams in our game. The following are what each code mean:

Conf - The ranking of all teams based on the conference each school will play in the 2024-25 season.

Over - The overall ranking of each team.

Name of the conference then "All-Time Value Add Basketball Game.

Rating - The number of points better or worse that the average GREAT team (basis is an Elite 8 team who was one of the top ranked team in the country as well.

Won - Number of games won in our Value Add Basketball Games.

Lost - Number of games lost in our Value Add Basketball Games.

(An 0-0 team means one of the 16 teams we plan but have not yet been created in the game)

Pts - The average points the team has scored in Value Add games so far.

Allow - The average points the team has allowed in Value Add Games.

PreS - How good we believe the team is based on their cards, regardless of the games we've played.

SOS - The average rating of the opponent in games played in our Value Add Basketball Games so far.

Russell, KC Jones Close on 22-2 Run to Advance San Francisco

In the most dramatic late game rally we recall in any of our Value Add Basketball Games, Bill Russell and KC Jones led a 22-2 run to close out the game and deliver the San Francisco 1956 repeat champions a come-from-behind 67-56 win in the Mississippi 2001. They will next play the winner of the last two teams in the game yet to play a game - VCU and Vanderbilt.

San Francisco rises to 33rd in our all-time team rankings, while, while Mississippi drops to 161st.

This was the first time we tracked miss free throws as well, and Russell's 50% free throw percentage (1-10 made, 11-20 missed) was a factor as he went 6 of 10 and the team went 14 of 22 compared to 11 of 14 for Mississippi.

But with five minutes left, KC Jones hit two free throws to make it 56-52 and extend the game (the last five minutes or 9 possessions, a foul or fast break steal add an extra possessions). Jones then stole a pass, and fed got the ball to Russell to make it 56-54. 

Two possessions later, Jones blocked a shot and got it ahead to Hal Perry who tied the score 56-56. Russell scored again for the first San Francisco lead of the game 58-56. Then we had the new block range come into play for the first time, as on a "65" Russell blocked a would-be score on one end, then on the other end Jones hit the only 3-point number on his 1-20 range with a "1" for a 3-pointer to make it 61-56. Mississippi hit only two 3-pointers, not unusual for an early team before they actually had the line as none of them have more than a 1-1 range for hitting 3-pointers in their 1-20 range. The surprise was that Mississippi also only had three 3-pointers with Jason Holmes just missing his 1-4 range with a "5" on a made basket.

One strategy note, Carl Boldt had a steal with 5 possessions (2:44 to play) but chose NOT to have a fast break, which would have allowed the advantage of the 20-side die to be lowered by 1, but also increased the chances Boldt (only scores or is fouled on 1-8 of 20) and instead he ran the regular offense and the ball ended up with Russell (1-12 score or is fouled) who scored to make it 63-56 and not create an extra possession since the fast break was not used.

Mississippi Debuts Against Bill Russell and KC Jones; Vandy Beats VCU

Here are the starting line-ups for our next game to be played today, as the Mississippi 2001 team debuts against Bill Russell, KC Jones and the 2-time NCAA champion San Francisco 1956. 

We made one little tweak to the stats we start the game with, as Value Add Basketball Games start with a 20-20 score and all 10 players with two points, a rebound and a foul - and then the starting guards with one steal and the starting front line with 2 rebounds instead of 1, and finally the starting center with 1 block. However, we decided that if a backup averaged less than 2 points a game or 1 rebound a game then they start those numbers at 0, and on points we instead give a 3-pointer instead of 2-pointer to starters to make up for those 0s.

We decided to do an expanded box score for this game to show the 3-pointer, 2-pointers and we are going to track free throws and free throw attempts as extra lines. Here is the box score at the beginning of the game. As always, score starts 20-20 with 44 possessions left to play:

Also notice on the lineups that the early teams all have the subs play possessions 44 to 38z since minutes played were not recorded. In the photo below the pennies show players who only gets it on their 1-5 number, while the dimes also get the ball on a 6,7 or 8. The San Fran reserves have all the coins to start the game, while Mississippi has a mixture and Aaron Harper gets the ball on two dimes (so a 2, 6 and 7) then Justin Reed comes in and gets the two dimes and the ball on a 4, 6 and 7.

Finally notice from the scoresheet at the bottom that Mississippi's 51-54 on the dunk combines with San Fran's -8 adjustment for a negative 4 noted as a 51-54 stop in the chart in the gwmez meaning a 51-54 iw a missed shot and defender gets a rebound.

All 184 All-Time Great Value Add Basketball Game teams have now played as Vanderbilt 1993 defeated VCU 1985 in the debut for both teams.

We wanted to play every team once to catch any glitches. We did catch one in this game as Mike Schlegel's card showed his Stamina at 40 possessions but his card suggested playing him on possessions 44-41. By playing the game we realized those we realized we had accidentally typed the possessions on which he needed to rest - to we updated the card to him playing possessions 40-1. On Bill Russell's game before we realized San Francisco 1956 should have calculated as a -10 on defense instead of a -8, so fixed that.

Vandetbilt 85, VCU 76

This was a rare game with no future NBA players, but five year's after Bill McCaffrey led this Vanderbilt team to the Sweet 16 and a final ranking of 8th, his brother Ed McCaffrey went All-Pro as a wide receiver who would take home Super Bowl titles with the Broncos. After three straight years of taking VCU to NCAA tournament wins and a final ranking of 11th for this VCU team, one of the most muscular elite guards in memory Calvin Duncan choice ministry over his 2nd round NBA pick.

This turned out to a shootout between point guards, as McCaffrey (23 points) almost matched VCUs Rolando Lamb (24 points, 4 steals). 

The normal slow paced VCU started hot, scoring on their first four possessions to take a 30-26 lead. However, on McCaffrey's first possession he hit a 3-pointer to give Vanderbilt a 33-30 lead, and they never trailed again in the 85-76 higher than expected scoring game.

There were no rim protectors at all, as the only actual blocked shot in our game was by VCU backup center Alvin Robinson who only plays four possessions to star the game (44, 43, 42 and 41).

Vanderbilt kept VCU off the boards with a 32-21 rebounding edge, and also hit 17 of 19 free throws while VCU only hit 7 of 12.

In this 8-team tournament Vanderbilt now plays Bill Russell's 1956 team, while Wilt Chamberlain's Kansas team plays Billy Donovan's 1987 Providence team.

Opposites Clash: Billy Donovan's Providence CRUSH Acie Law's Texas A&M - Move up to 33rd All-Time

Update: box score below. Billy Donovan's eight steals propel Providence 1987 to a 77-60 blowout of Texas A&M, surging the Friars from 87th to 33rd all-time in our game. Texas A&M drops from 101st to 155th in our www.kenpom.com type ratings. The "preseason" ratings listed on this sheet indicate where we believe the team would rank just based on how good the cards are, but then we adjust per results of games we play. Providence's unstoppable offense meets Texas A&Ms immovable offense.  Providence had only one big run, but it was all the way to a stunning 1987 Final Four under Rick Pitino with future great coach Billy Donovan running the point guard spot all 44 possessions in our game.

We were finally able to play only our second Value Add Basketball Game of the month, and the results and box score are below.

One thing you will note on Providence's starting lineup is they have four players with an extra number in "gets ball" while there are only three extra numbers in the 8-sided die. Therefore we need to pick which three get a dime to show they are the 6, 7 and 8 roll.  We skipped Carlton Screen as his shooting 20-sided die range is not quite as strong as the other three, so the dimes show left to right the 6 goes to Donovan's 7 to Darryl Wright and 8 to Steve Wright.

Texas A&M never made the final four but win at least one March Madness game in six straight seasons. However in this game Donovan picked Texas A&M clean with eight steals to completely disrupt them and Providence walked away with a 77-60 win to advance and play Wilt Chamberlain's Kansas 1957 in their second game.

The interesting thing is the defensive minded Aggies got the pace they wanted, with scores in the 60s and 70s while Providence prefers games in the 80s and 90s, but the Friars still prevailed easily. Note both teams had eventual NBA players, but Providence's Marty Conlon and the Aggies Donald Sloan were just starting their careers so backups, while the soon to be NBA player including Billy Donovan, who today got the better of the Aggies future NBA player Acie Law.

Nevada Leads Best 2023 Colleges Not Yet in Game

 Worked through second straight weekend at www.takebackaction.org, so no new games played in our tournaments. However, with the buzz in Virginia about the rising programs at James Madison University (ranked #18) and Liberty University, we took a look at the best teams this season who do not yet have a team in the game from another great season.

The bottom line is the www.kenpom.com ratings so far do not give any of them a good shot to have their 2024 team make the grade. Those two are among 12 top 100 teams who do not yet have a team in the game. However, none are in the top 60. Here are the teams to watch. Most surprising to me is Nevada, which I thought I added the COVID season but apparently not, so will watch closely

Women's Value Add Basketball - Seeding for New Teams Being Added

Last year we played out our Women's all-time great teams in the Value Add Basketball Game, with Tennessee 1998 defeating Louisiana Tech 1982 for the title. As Basketball Reference has added more women's stats, we have been able to identify and capture stats to start to create additional teams. Here is the current roster - and you can click here for the player cards but if it says "Cards to be made" then the cards are not there yet.

Keep in mind the 20 teams we thought were the best were created last year and played our all-time great tournament. These would be the 21st through 36th greatest teams but as we play we may realize some should be further up the list. When we say "greatest" keep in mind we only allow one team per school except for letting Baylor and UConn have two seasons, so certainly those schools and Tennessee would have more of the top 36 teams if we allowed all their great teams into the tournament. Here is the seeding for the next tournament, with the 2006 National Champs from Maryland as the No. 1 seed for a matchup with 16-seed and ACC rival Virginia from 2018.  The No. 2 seed is the National Champ Texas Tech from 1993, taking on our 15-seed in the Georgia Bulldogs from 2013.
