Hoops All-Americans and All-Conference Players To Date

Luka Garza retains his No. 1 spot in the www.valueaddbasketball.com rankings. The nine most valuable players hail from either a football power conference or the Big East, but the rest of the top 25 list below includes three players from top-ranked Gonzaga of the West Coast Conference, a player from football surprise story Coastal Carolina and two players from the American Athletic Conference.

The SEC, which has averaged two top 25 players a season during the past 15 years of the all-time ratings, is the one football power conference with none of the 25 most valuable basketball players so far this year. However, this would not be the case if Sharife Cooper of Auburn had not missed the first 11 games of the season. In his first seven games, Cooper has been worth an average of 9.43 points per game more than a typical replacement player on offense and defense. Therefore, he has actually been the 10th best player of more than 4,000 Division 1 players since starting to play, in essence a 2nd team All-American, but because the calculations give him a 0.0 rating for each of the 11 games he missed he is much further down in the season rankings.

"We hope coaches and writers consider these ratings that carefully weigh each player's offensive and defensive stats as well as level of competition faced," said John Pudner, the inventor of www.valueaddbasketball.com. "These ratings do not replace the many things they see on the court from a good pick to team leadership. We simply encourage everyone who votes on All-Conference teams to take the same balanced approach as the NBA execs who have met with me during the past eight years - sometimes our valuations help point out an underrated player who on further review their scouts decide to draft, and in other cases help confirm or call into question exactly how high a player should rate on their draft board."

If you are one of the many sports fans who wait until the one final football blast, Super Bowl Sunday, to turn attention to the final college basketball rush toward March Madness, the ratings of college basketball players on your favorite team are current at Value Add Basketball, or you can click on this google sheet to download and sort all 3,642 rated players. Media coverage of how the system works is featured in Sports Illustrated, ESPN and Fox Sports and used by some NBA execs to help their scouting operations prepare for the draft.

After listing the Top 25 players below, you can find the list of the 1st Team All-Conference teams for all 31 Division 1 conferences playing this year (the Ivy League opted out of the season due to Covid-19). Sports Information Directors and Sports Writers please scroll to the bottom for language you can use regarding players you cover.

The following are the current All-Conference teams for each of the Division 1 college conferences. The players listed are the five most valuable players in the conference according to the Value Add Basketball calculations, unless the top five did not include a Point Guard. If no conference point guards rated in the top five, then the top-rated point guard in the conference replaced the 5th rated player. The first player listed is the player who calculates as the MVP of the conference to date.

The points (Value Add) listed after the team name indicates the Value Add ranking, or how many points worse a team would likely do if the player missed a game. The first player listed is Atlantic 10 MVP Jalen Crutcher calculates as a 7.9 Value Add ranking. Dayton is 10-5, but because their wins over Eastern Illinois, Northern Kentucky, Mississippi State, Mississippi and Saint Louis were all by less than 8 points, we project they would have lost all five of those games if Crutcher had missed the game, projecting them to be only 5-10 if he were not on the team.

Perhaps the most impressive rating is for USC's freshmen Evan Mobley, who ranks fourth in the country. The second most valuable freshman in the country is Michigan's Hunter Dickinson, ranked 62nd.

For Sports Information Directors and Sports Writers - feel free to use any information in this blog or the attached links to the google sheet of all players or www.valueaddbasketball.com website.

Sample reference for any player listed in the Top 400:

Player(s) Name of Team Name ranks as one of the elite college basketball players in the country today, according to the www.valueaddbasketball.com system that ranks all Division 1 men's players based on all offensive and defensive stats, team defense and level of competition. John Pudner, the inventor of the system, notes that NBA executives first began meeting with him eight years ago after the system spotted several future NBA players, and he notes that Player(s) is in the top 10 percent of all Division 1 players.

If player is in the top 40 on the google sheet, you can include "is in the top 1 percent of all players" or if in the top 200 players can include "is in the top 5 percent of all players" etc. - each 40 players is one percent.

Sample reference for any player listed on their All-Conference team above:

Player(s) Name of Team Name deserves to be a 1st team All-Conference player, according to the www.valueaddbasketball.com system that ranks all Division 1 men's players based on all offensive and defensive stats, team defense and level of competition.
