As we get to the second Mets vs. Brewers game, here are the batters and pitchers including optional in season card upgrades for players in the top 200 WAR through June 8. Notice the first three batters in our Mets line-up are in the top 50 players based on WAR. (Click for Statis-pro rules and free batters and pitchers 2025 cards)
The Mets won 7-3 at Milwaukee despite a battle of aces, and this will be the No. 4 starters - the Brewers Tobias Myers against the Mets Tylor Megill, who will not face his little brother and Brewers closer Trevor Megell because the younger Megell pitched in the first of two games.
The result and explanation of the card adjustments will appear after the game below the picture of the players. Francisco Álvarez's projected breakout year at 23 years old has not happened, as he is off to a slow start, but his projected card produced a double and homer in his first two at bats hitting behind three Mets who actually rank in the top 50 of all players this year in WAR - as the Mets beat the Brewers for the second time - this time 4-0. The box score appears below the player sheets.
Luis Torrens has actually had a slightly better stat than Alvarez to grab a few more at bats, but we use the better Statis-Pro card and Alvarez excellent 27-33 home run range makes him a cleanup hitter in the game and perhaps in the future.
The three batters before him all rank in the top 50 players in the game in actual WAR this season, and in the optional upgrades we presented in the last couple of blogs those three all have the option of a 27-32 home run range. However, the only one of the three I used it for was Lindor, as the standard card with that home run range takes away homers for Soto and Alonso and a lot of walks from Soto's incredible 41-62 walk range. If you want to consider in season upgrades for batters see this blog on how to do it.
The pitching upgrades were more important for the Mets. New reliever Huascar Brazoban coming in as a PB2-8 for being a top 200 player who was a relief pitcher was key since Diaz, Minter and Garrett - the top 3 relievers, all pitched in the first of the 2-game series and we only let relievers pitch once in every two game season. While he did not get a save for holding onto the 4-0 lead in the 9th, it was nice to have him to wrap down the score. If you want to upgrade pitchers based on WAR see this blog.
Perhaps more important was Griffin Canning being upgraded to a PB2-7 and able to go multiple innings (actually a starter, but with our 4-man rotations in the game, extra starters can give long relief. Canning pitched the 7th and 8th inning and did get the old since he game in with a 2-0 lead.
Tylor Megill was the starter, and gave up five hits in the first three innings including three straight singles in the third inning, but completed six innings of shut out ball for the win. He was the No. 4 pitcher starting in the 4 vs. 4 meeting we use after the aces pitch the first of the two games - and in this case Kodai Senga starting the first game when he was a PB 2-8, but he is not upgraded to a PB2-9 as the 31st best player in baseball according to WAR.
On the hitting side, while Alvarez great card led to a double and a homer to help the Mets to a 2-0 lead, it was the big three who wrapped it up in the 7th. Soto singled, Alonso hit a hard grounder down the 3rd base line that Ortiz could not get to as it went for an RBI double, then Lindor hit a hard grounder that 2nd baseman Capra could not get to and went for an RBI single - 2 attempts at clutch defensive players that were not made by the excellent fielding Brewers who won the team gold glove last year.
