Yankees in 1st in Statis-Pro, MLB and baseball tears

We decided to check and compare the results of our Statis-Pro results and results from the actual MLB season. So far we have played 30 games between the top 10 teams in the AL, which counts as 90 games based on our 5+ runs = 3-game sweep covered in this blog.

Since we relegate the five weakest teams in the league prior to the season, these 10 teams do not have the benefit of racking up wins against the bottom 5 teams. Therefore for an apples-to-apples comparison we compared each teams actual MLB record against only the other 9 top teams to get the first results listed below through 91 total games. The bottom set of standings are in our Statis-Pro games so far.

The first thing you will notice is the New York Yankees are in first place both in our Statis-Pro league and in the Major League Baseball Games against the other nine top teams in real baseball. One of those games lead to this CBS Evening News clip that you need to watch if you don't know that it is ok to cry in baseball.

The two teams that are way out of whack are Cleveland and Boston, who are both off to bad starts - in Boston's case a terrible start - in actual MLB baseball but have winning records in Statis-Pro. Part of this can be explained by the fact that we use a 4-man rotation - so Shane Bieber has pitched two of Cleveland's six actual games and Nathan Eovaldi the same for the Red Sox.

We will see if they hold up in games 7 and 8 with their 3rd and 4th best starters on the mound. Here are our next games.

After the Yankee focused post above, the Twins Sano hammered 3 homers to lead the Twins to a ridiculous 19-2 sweep to move them in front of the Yankees. However, Stanton homered twice and German allowed 1 hit in 6 innings en route to a 4-0 Yankees win in the nightcap that left the teams tied at 13-11.

As noted they actually have the two best records against the top 10 AL teams in real mlb play.

Kluber ejected, teammates throw shutout

Corey Kluber was ejected after giving up 4 walks in 2.1 innings as the Blue Jays took a 4-0 lead on a grandslam by leadoff hitter Hernandez.

On a z-play at that point the "12" in the original charts resulted in Kluber being ejected for arguing balls and strikes. Funny when the game plays out in a realistic like that, as opposed to a pitcher striking out 4 straight batters and then being ejected for arguing balls and strikes LOL.

The games were a mirror - as Hernandez batter leadoff and how heroics backed up a 6 inning, 0 run outing by Manoah for a 6-3 win.

In the second game it was the Rays leadoff hitter Josh Lowe with the batting heroics - 3 hits - while McClanahan threw 6 scoreless innings in a 3-0 Rays win to earn the split.

With no "sweep" 5-run wins in this series, there were 6 sweeps in 30 games during the first three rounds for 20% of games. The actual MLB average this year is 25%, but because our league relegates the bottom 5 teams, there are no chances to beat up on the week teams as the 10 are more balanced.

In fact, noone has a better record than 11-7 at this stage. As the tracker below the scoresheet shows no team is worse than 7-11 either. The average runs per game is 4.4, whereas last year it was 4.5.

Mariners and Astros Sweep Each Other

Right after the previous post noting only 4 of 26 games had been won by 5+ runs for a "sweep," we had a 2-game series in which each team blew out the other once for a "sweep."

Ray showed the Astros vulnerability against lefties with a 7-inning 3 hitter and Haniger had a Homer, double and single to lead a 14-2 Seattle win over Houston. That gave the Mariners credit for a 3 games to 0 edge.

However, Garcia the threw 6 shutout innings and because neither closer pitched in the first game blowout, Presley could pitch the 9th to wrap up a 7-0, 4 pitcher shutout. Correa's replacement at shortstop - only a CD2 as opposed to Carlos top cd5 but with pop in his bat - had 2 doubles in the win to secure the Astros Sweep for 3 games to 0 edge to make the series a 3-3 split.

One reason I like doing all 2 game series is I keep it simple with all of each team's relievers pitching one of the two games but not both - so you do get to see each of their cards in action, but not team is at a disadvantage in a series because they have tired relievers from the  previous series. This season I have pitcher the top 2 starters or the 3rd and 4th best starting pitchers for each team against each other. This works fine if you keep all teams with just as many games, but when I've let one team get ahead of others in games, I've had to pitch the 1st and 4th best starter or the 2nd and 3rd best to keep it even.

With 6 of our 26 games now 5+ run sweeps, that equals 71% of all series so far not being sweeps, just below the 75% in actual play this year.

Below is the score sheet with the player cards for those 4 players mentioned, and the the log if all games to date.

All Baseball Board Gamers - Consider 5+ Run Win = 3-Game Sweep

While this blog is a bit wonky, please consider the fun league rule I use that counts each game as a 3-game series. I suggest this rule not only for for those who play my Statis-Pro game or another Statis-Pro basic game or Advanced Statis-Por, but also for those who play All Star Baseball, APBA Baseball, Baseball the card game, Challenge The Yankees, Diceball, Dynasty League Baseball, Replay Baseball, Strat-O-Matic Baseball, Pocket Ballpark or Boardofdreams, or some other game I have not seen yet.

First, here are the reasons I believe the rule is fun, and then second I will cover the wonky part of why it will actually make your results even more accurate over time:

Reasons the 5+ = Sweep Rule Is Good to Use

It eliminates almost all boring games, because finishing off a 7-1 game can be boring, but knowing if you give up two runs to only win 7-3 costs the team a win (taking the series 2 games to 1 rather than 3 games to none) makes almost every game exciting.

Board gamers cannot play a higher enough volume of games - and the the margin of error is huge for a weak team to pull off 1-run games in a very short season and a teams margin of victory is a better predictor in a small number of games of how the team would do if you had time to play three times as many games for more accurate results.

My actual rule is to get a sweep the winning team must have led by 5 runs or more at the end of the 8th inning, without using their best reliever through that 8th inning (in other words, your closer cannot wrap up a sweep in the 8th). Using the score at the end of the 8th was also put in place rather than having a home team who won 6-2 in turn batting in the bottom of the 9th.

As covered in the next section - it is accurate to count a 5+ run lead as a 3-game sweep, and all other wins as a 2 games to 1 sweep.

Wonky Detail of all 110 3-game 2022 Season Series

At the bottom of this blog we list the scores of all 134 MLB Series (405 Games), though only 110 of the series were completed three game series - played from April 7 to May 7 listing the margin of victory for each game.

(Added note: a reader pointed out one month is too short a sample. I should have clarified initially ran 4 years of scores - almost 10,000 games - to calculate teams swept a 3-game series about 14% of the time and win by 5+ about 14%. I just like to run a check like the first month a year in case that ever changes - for example of teams started scoring 6 runs a game instead of the 4.5 from last year, I might find I need to change it to a 6+ run rule to keep it at 14% one year, but so far even with runs down a little the table below shows we are still at 14% using 5+).

The most important reason we check this is to see if the stats still show that a team has the same chance of winning a game by 5 or more runs then they do of sweeping a 3-game series, and once again that is the case. The most important factor is that 74% of games are decided by 4 runs or fewer.

That is within 1% of each team's chance of sweeping or being swept in a 3-game series. We looked at all 110 series of 3 games or more or if a series was more than 3 games we just counted the first 3 games of the series as the 3-game series. As you can see by the comparison, the bottom line is 74% of games are decided by 4 runs or fewer and 75% of 3-games series are split 2 games to 1 either way.

Reassured by the top table that it is just as hard to win by 5+ runs as it is to win all three games of a series - on the top table - we feel good about

Reassured that once again in 2022 winning a game by 5 or more runs is as difficult as winning a series 3 games to none, we are happy that our fun league rule that each counts as three runs.

As you can see from the bottom table, in our 28 actual games this year we have actually had only 6 sweeps so far, so only 21% of games rather than the expected 25% of games - but we expect that to even out as it was close to the 25% over the last couple of seasons we played.

Here is the breakdown by margin of victory for all actual MLB games this year, followed by the actual list of all games these first 31 days of the real MLB season. The table starts with the most lopsided road win, which was Cleveland going into Kansas City for a 17-3 win, and by the end of the list has the biggest home margin with a +21 for when the Cubs hosted the Pirates and won 21-0.

Bieber ERA 0.00 thru 2 gms, but pen blows 5-run sweep

Bieber went 7 innings allowing only one unearned run to keep a 0.00 ERA after two starts, but the bullpen could not hold his 6-1 lead to give him a second straight sweep.

If the Angels had not scored 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th after he left then Bieber would have 2 of only 5 SWEEPS (5 run lead after 8 up) in the first 26 games of year - as it is only the Yanks Cole and Red Sox Eovaldi have matched Bieber in gems for sweeps, and the Angels slugged their way to an 11-4 sweep.

Typically in 26 games one team or the other would have SWEPT 7 games - so 4 is behind pace. This is just a league rule we play in our seasons, but certainly not required to play Statis-Pro Baseball.

The Indians 11-7 record is much better than their actual MLB record, but we use 4-man rotations so any great pitchers like Bieber make a team batter in our game then when he is only pitching ever 5 or 6 games in MLB.

Here is the score sheet of the doubleheader and then the standings and game log.

ChiSox Twins, 3-game sweeps, baserunning

A couple of Statis-Pro items came up in the ChiSox vs. Twins series.

First, I traveled and forgot my board chart on runners taking an extra base hits. I looked it up and am pasting the image below for any time a runner wants to take and extra base on a hit, which several tried during the two games.

All 2022 Projected Batters (49 pages, 9 cards to a page) and All 2022 Projected Pitchers (62 pages, 9 cards to a page) is the only other thing needed to play the game, though more detailed instructions appear in this Statis-Pro baseball Game Rules.

While the inventors originals ranges were pretty neat you need to make two adjustments to be accurate.

First, rather than ADDING 20 to the ranges with two outs, you should actually use these ranges with two outs and SUBTRACT 20 of there are less than two outs.

The other change to be accurate is that the runner is rarely OUT trying to advance, if he does not advance it usually means the runner held to the same number of bases as the batter.

The runner should only be thrown out if:

87-88 if outfielder is a T2

85-88 if T3

83-88 if T4

81-88 if T5

This matches the actual modern percentage is 30% takes the extra base, 68% goes only as many bases as batter, and less than 2% thrown out.

The second factor is just a little quirk we play - that every game counts as a 2-1 series win, or a sweep only if the winning team led by at least 5 at the end of 8 innings without their available reliever with the nest ERA used through 8 innings. Teams only do this 14% of the time, same as the chance of sweeping a 3-game series.

With the White Sox awesome lineup but terrible pitching and fielding cards, they may have the best chance of either being swept or sweeping the opponent.

The ChiSox we're in the verge with a 10-5 lead going in the bottom of the 7th but Correa and Polanco singled and if the ChiSox used their PB 2-9 closer Hendriks they would have voided the chance for a 3-game sweep, so Kopech stayed in and Sano hit a 3-run homer. Hendrik saved the wild 10-8 win in the 9th.

The second game it was the Twins on the verge of a sweep with a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the 8th with bases loaded and one out. In that caee the White Sox could use their best remaining reliever (with Hendriks having pitched the first game, Graveman was the best ERA) and he got out of it, though Buxton drove a DEEP drive but it was a"52," and homers occur only on a 11-31 on games in Minnesota. The twins held on for a 4-0 win, so no sweep for either team and the series is a 3-3 split.

As you can see from the game log below the score sheet, only 4 of 24 games.so far have been a sweep in our league play so far.

Yankees move into 1st with late surge vs Red Sox

Finally got in the first game of May, back at my place with my 1978 fast action cards and board but 2022 projected cards.

All 2022 Projected Batters (49 pages, 9 cards to a page) and All 2022 Projected Pitchers (62 pages, 9 cards to a page) is the only other thing needed to play the game, though more detailed instructions appear in this Statis-Pro baseball Game Rules.

The Yankees moved into first place by virtue of a Cole vs Eovoldi scoreless tie in the bottom of the 6th exploding into a 10-7 Yankees win
