Astros vs Red Sox Game 6

 ALCS Game 6.

Another classic in an elimination game. Season on the line, the Astros build a 3-0 lead after 3. Of course the Red Sox rally, first Xander Bogaerts with a 2-run HR, and then in the 6th they get another 2-run HR from Kevin Plawecki (4HR's in 5 games played in series) The Astros scratch out a run in the 7th on an Altuve sacrifice fly 4-4 after 7. The bullpens get it into extra innings, and then Carlos Correa mired in a 2-23 slump, delivers a walk-off double as the Astros save their season 5-4 in 10 innings. (Series tied 3-3). For game 7, it will be Chris Sale vs. Zach Greinke.

4 Deep Drives Under New Rules Wrap Up NLCS

Games 3 and 4 of the Statis-Pro NLCS gave is our first chance to use the new ballpark charts for deep drives - and we had 4 of them.

The Dodgers Pollock drove a deep drive in the top of the 6th of Game 3 and the "25" scraped out of the park (11-25 is a homer with a right handed batter in a game in Atlanta) to break a tie and give the Dodgers a 3-2 lead.

In the 8th the Dodgers Trea Turner drove a deep drive and the "38" was a double (26-52 is a double for a eighty). Turner was later thrown out at home on a Betts single but for the third game in a row the Dodgers rallied from behind - winning 7-2.

In Game 4, the Dodgers Justin Turner hit a deep drive and his "57" for a single (53-76 is a single, runners advance 2).

It was not until the bottom of the 9th that Pederson gave the Braves their first deep drive, and his "23" more easily cleared the fence (for a lefty, an 11-41 is a homer in Atlanta). However, it was not enough as the Dodgers win 7-4 to take the series - which their fans believe they would have done without all the injuries late.

They await the Red Sox-Astros winner in the Statis-pro World Series.

Statis-Pro Card Adjustments Based on if they were Hurt or Helped by Home Park

We unveiled the new Statis-Pro ballpark factors for an expanded use of the DEEP drives on the batters cards. While that chart gives you the ranges to use on the 11-88 Random Number after a reading of DEEP, we also need to adjust the player cards for players who benefitted or were hurt by a pitcher or hitter park. The batters cards recently calculated (click here) are NOT yet adjusted.

For players on 14 of the 30 teams, the ballpark adjustment is not big enough to adjust the card calculated using the normal Statis-pro formulas. However, the chart below shows the stadiums that merit adjustments.

If a player's home park is relatively neutral, then a batter will have "no change" and the actual ERA or FIP of a pitcher in a park with a "1.00" in the column to the right then no change is made - which is the case with the Angels and Astros (yes Minute Made park gives very cheap homers on balls lofted down the left field line, but overall the park actually does not favor batters.

However, an Athletics batter would have a home run added (+1 HR) after the card is calculated and a Blues Jays batter would have a home run subtracted (-1 HR). If a Blue Jays player did not get to play half his games in the Rogers Centre, he would have about one fewer homers and his card, whereas an Athletics batter would have about one more HR number if he did not need to play half his games in the Oakland Coliseum.

The opposite is true of pitchers of course. An A's pitcher who benefits from half of his games being played in the Coliseum must multiply his ERA by 1.12 to show about what it would be if all games were in a neutral park, and a Blue Jays pitcher multiplies ERA by 0.88 to show what his ERA would be if he pitched all his games in a neutral park. This ERA adjustment is a precise measurement of how much the ERA would be impacted with every opposing batter's having their card adjusted as shown by that team - so A's pitchers are adjusted WORSE by the exact same Runs Created value of how much their batters are HELPED by the adjustment.

Here are the numbers.

Red Sox vs. Astros Game 5 in Statis-Pro

The final four playoff teams in the Statis-Pro season using projected cards were an exacto match with the actual final four teams in the real ALCS and NLCS. However, right now the two actual World Series teams will need to rally from behind to avoid a series MLB would have actually preferred- the Red Sox vs. the Dodgers. Absent the injuries, the Dodgers are ahead two games to none against the Braves, and our Montana Commissioner had the AL teams back on the field today.

ALCS Game 5.

Pitching takes the lead in this pivotal game. Framber Valdez starts with 5 shutout innings. But Nathan Eovaldi is even better going 7 2/3 innings only allowing 2-hits. The Red Sox get their offense in the 6th with RBI singles from Kevin Plawecki and Danny Santana. Matt Barnes picks up the save in a 2-0 win. (Red Sox lead series 3-2)

Statis-Pro New Ball Park Factors

One aspect of the 2022 Projected Cards we will be expanding is the DEEP drives. Each batter will have a range of FOUR deep drives this year, between his Home Run and Strikeout Range.

A player in a neutral park (the new Rangers Globe Life Field) will be assumed to get one home run, one double, one single with runners advancing 2 bases, and one SacFly where any runner on base advances (technically not a SacFly if no run scores on the play, but you get it).

Therefore a player who draws a DEEP drive playing at Texas will get a home run on an 11-28, a double on a 31-48, a single on a 51-68 or deep drive caught on a 71-88.

However a left-handed batter playing at Angel Stadium will drive it out of the park a lot - an 11-46 - while a right handed batter in Angel Stadium will drive it out on an 11-30 (really an 11-28 since there are no 29 or 30 random numbers, but running formulas with based 8 (Dec2Oct for any stat geeks like me) it's easier just ot let it show up that way.

Here are the ranges for each Stadium. You should really use the left or right for a switch hitter based on which way he is hitting for that at bat, but I included "S" in case you want to just use one factor for all batters.

If you are playing with the 2021 MLB pitcher and batter cards and want to use these charts, then add two DEEP numbers to the range if each batters card (so 31-32 Deep Range becomes 31-34).

Parking an unrelated note here, but if you are playing the current World Series note that Eddie Rosario does not have a hitting card since he only had 33 regular season at bats for the Braves. However, you can always use these basic hitting cards when a pitcher is at bat, or for someone like Rosario just look up his projected OPS to use these cards and you will see he would have a 26-32 home run range with the temporary card.

Here are the deep ranges for each park based on if a batter is hitting left handed or right handed:

Astros and Red Sox Battle in Game 4

The Red Sox hosted Game 4 of the Statis-pro ALCS.

ALCS Game 4.

For the first time in the series it wasn't a close game. For the second straight time in the playoffs Lance McCullers delivers a subpar performance. Red Sox already had a 2-1 lead, when they go back-to-back-to-back. (Schwarber, Plawecki, Renfroe) and build a 5-1 lead. The Red Sox backup catcher now has three homers in three games played in the series. Statis-Pro AL Cy Young winner Eduardo Rodriguez puts in a quality start and they cruise to a 7-3 win. (Series tied 2-2)

NLCS 1st 2 Dodgers-Braves games, ALCS Game 3

The Statis-pro NLCS started with two games in LA. The Braves led both games, but their three top relievers who had been in scored upon in the playoffs could not hold the leads.

Minter relieved Morton with the Braves leading 2-0 in the 8th, but gave up three straight homers to the heart of the order - Muncy, Smith and Pollock - to give the Dodgers a 5-2 win in Game 1.

The Braves led 1-0 in the second game when Smith relieved Anderson in the 6th, but he allowed a two out single to score Betts, and then pinch-hitter Taylor hit a pinch hit homer off Jackson in the 7tu for a 2-1 Dodgers win to give them a two games to none lead heading to Atlanta for games 3, 4 and if necessary 5.

Astros-Red Sox Game 3

Yet another close battle.

Chris Sale doesn't have his best stuff. The Astros string together five consecutive singles to plate 3-runs in the first. Of course the Red Sox  rally capped by who else, backup catcher Kevin Plawecki who hits another 2-run HR to make it 3-3 after 4. It stays that way until the 7th when Alex Bregman hits his 2nd HR of the series (both go ahead shots) The big question was could the Houston bullpen hold it. Ryan Pressly, who had two blown saves all regular season (13-15), but already has two blown saves this postseason, answered the call with a 1-2-3 ninth. Astros win 4-3. (Houston leads series 2-1)
