Kepler Powers Phils Past Cubs to tie with Brewers for 1st

 Max Kepler hit two homers in an opening 10-1 Phillies win that counted as a sweep, then another homer in Wrigley to spot the Phillies to a 2-0 win before the Cubs rallied to win 3-2. With the Phillies 5+ run win counting as a 3-game sweep mark and the Cubs narrow win counting as a 2 games to 1 mark, the Phillies win the series 4 games to 2.

The Phillies improve to 18-12 on the year to catch the Brewers at an identical 18-12 with only the series remaining between them for 1st place - while the Cubs are done playing and eliminated form first at 19-17 but still alive for our wildcard. If they split the final series both would be 21-15, but otherwise one will have more for 1st place.  At 13-11 the Mets still have two series left against the bottom two teams in the East - the Cardinals and Marlins, so they are mathematically alive for the division.

Why We Count 5-run Wins as "Sweeps" in Our Standings: Brewers Sweep 3 of 10

 Since 1961 a total of 27% of 3-game series end in sweeps according to MLB Sweeps.  To better simulate a short season in Statis-Pro baseball, we treat every game as a 3-game series, and count each game as a 3-game sweep if the winner is ahead by 5 runs after 8 innings without using its closer. This combined the fact that a team with a better win differential than their record indicates typically sees their record improve when more games are played and vice versa.

If we wanted to really duplicate the sweep chance exactly we would make it any game won by 4 runs or more - which is almost 27% of all games just like sweeps are 27% of all series sweeps, so we make it a little tougher to record a sweep by requiring a 5-run margin - which happens in 21.6% of all MLB games and so far has happened in 21.2% of our games this season (14 of 66 games).

This means that on average in 10 games a team would:

Sweep 1 of 10 games to get credit for a 3 games to 0 sweep.

Win 4 of 10 games by 4 or fewer to get credit for a 2 games to 1 series.

Lose 4 of 10 games by 4 or fewer to get "blame" or winning 1 game and losing 2 games.

Be "swept" in 1 of 10 games to be blamed for 0 wins and 3 losses.

That means a team would be 5-5 in actual results and we would credit them with a 15-15 mark in our Statis-Pro season.

However, the Milwaukee Brewers split with the St. Louis Cardinals tonight to make them 5-5 in our games this season. 

However, they beat St. Louis 13-1 in the opener which is their 3rd SWEEP in our season, and they lost 1-3 in the nightcap - meaning they have still not been beaten by 5 runs in any of their 5 losses.

When you do the math, that means the Brewers are 18-12 in our season to be first in our Statis-Pro NL East."

The Cardinals are also 5-5 in actual results, but it was the second time they have been "swept" in 10 games to only "sweeping" the other team once, therefore they are now 14-16 in our season stats.

The reason we like this math is that run differential indicates that if two teams split the first two games of a 6-game series, but one scores a total of 12 runs (like the Brewers did) while the other scores 9 runs, there is a good chance the Brewers win the series 4 games to 2 so in essence we score things that way.

Misiorowski, Woodruff Statis-Pro Cards vs. Cardinals

I was at a Brewers game this year and told my family - with the players they lost, looks like a 0.500 team to me. Wow was I wrong. And for their series vs. St. Louis in Statis-Pro we are going to the 2 and 3 starters instead of 1 and 4 so we get both the rookie phenom and the player coming back from the long injury.

Padres 13-1 Win Knocks Braves Out of Statis-Pro Playoffs For Now

The Statis-Pro Padres scored 19 runs in their first 8 games in our league play, but against the Braves lost 5-7 and then broke through with 13-1 win. That is recorded as a 4-2 series win which gets them back to .0.500 with only two games left against another 0.500 team Cincinnati. The Braves final two will be against the Giants, who they need to catch for the last playoff spots. However, the Giants must also face the top team in our league, the Dodgers.

The Miami Marlins Statis-Pro debut, after having been one of the three relegated teams until their surprising .500 player in actual MLB moved us to put them into league play in place of the Pirates, was rudely greeted by the Cubs. 

Cubs All-Star Matt Boyd pitched his max 5 innings pitched of shutout ball, and the Cubs won 5-1. They then jumped to a 5-0 lead in game two and won 9-6. The updated standings with a few corrections from our last post. The one big difference from actual MLB is the Braves playing like they have the last decade, but much better in Statis-Pro vs. actual MLB through a small sample.

The wins, both counting as two games to one overall games in our standings, make them 17-13 and move them into the 2nd wildcard spot in these standings. Only 13 of 62 series have been scored as 3-game sweeps (winning team must have been up by 5 runs after 8 innings without losing their closer before the 9th). Late rallies by the Marlins to get within 5 runs in game 2 did avoid the Cubs getting credit for a 3 games to 0 sweep though, so both games counted as 2 games to 1 Cubs wins in our league rules so the Cubs are credited with 4 wins and 2 losses fo move into the 2nd wildcard spot.
