Kareem's Record 20 Rebounds vs. UCLA 6'5 and Under Not Enough

As we watched a strong UCLA team playing a road Big Ten game, we rolled dice with two other UCLA teams facing each other. (UPDATE: the Elite 8 game to determine the next opponent for UCLA 1964 just went final behind Christian Laettner's Duke and the undefeated team that capped the streak in 1975).)

This Elite 8 game would be a rematch of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and his UCLA freshman 1964 team (since freshman could not play varsity at the time) against the UCLA varsity, which became the first undefeated UCLA champ of the incredible 10 of 12 run.

With no other starter on the court for either team taller than 6'5, the 7'2 Abdul-Jabbar set a Value Add Basketball Game record with 20 rebounds, slightly above the 15.5 rebounds he actually averaged when he was a senior in 1967. The 1964 UCLA team led the the entire game until there were just 7 possessions left, at which point Kareem drew a fifth foul on opposing center Keith Erickson to take the 68-67 lead.

He did miss the and-one, with his only weakness for the game being only 2 of 6 on free throws, despite normally be a decent 65% free throw shooter (1-13 dice roll good, 14-20 miss). 

However, the 1964 backcourt of future NBA players Gail Goodrich and Walt Hazzard kept up their suffocating defense to combined for 41 points, 5 three-pointers, and 9 steals to keep the ball from getting down to Kareem most of the game and register a 78-72 win to advance to the Elite 8 where they will either face the last of the UCLA undefeated champs UCLA 1975 - Dave Meyers vs  Duke 1992 - Christian Laettner.in a complete tossup game.

The other Elite 8 games feature Cincinnati 1962 - Paul Hogue as a 6-point favorite against UNLV 1991 - Larry Johnson and another intramural blue blood battle of Kentucky 2012 - Anthony Davis as a 6-point favorite over Kentucky 1978 - Jack Givens.

Boeheim Leads Fast Pace Syracuse in Upset Bid vs. Cincinnati

 Jim Boeheim ran a disciplined 2-3 zone to take Syracuse to championships, but as a player with all time great Dave Bing the 1966 Syracuse team road a "defense optional" style to average 99 points per game to take the Orange Men to their first Final 8 in nine years.

Even No. 2 Vanderbilt could not slow them down during the season, though Vandy did survive a 113-98.

This is the 2nd of 4 games pitting a team added to the game because they were part of the 10 greatest dynasties ever (Cincinnati, the 1-seed) vs. four teams added because one of their players has broken into the NBA top 75 players of all time - in this case 16-seed Syracuse's case Dave Bing.

Note at the bottom of Syracuse's team sheet that an extra 10 possessions will be played because of the number of extra possessions Syracuse created due to their fast pace. As shown in the bracket at the bottom, the winner of this game gets the winner of the 8 v 9 game between UNLV 1991 and UNC 2017.

Cincinnati already had the 1960 team of Oscar Robertson in the Value Add Basketball Game, but this team with their next batch of stars comes into the game as the No. 2 ranked team in our entire game.

The 2-seed right behind them, UCLA's undefeated team from two years later, was already impressive in the first "great team against great player" match-up when they beat Villanova 85-65.

Cincinnati has a +17 rating, which combined with Syracuse's -7 makes Cincy a 24-point favorite in the game which would make an upset the biggest upset yet in our 305 games played since the invention of the game. DePaul 1981 with Mark Aguire and Terry Cummings won despite being 18-point underdogs against Kareem's UCLA teams to capture the biggest upset yet.

The only teams we have not used in a game to date are those 26 new teams. The tournament below lists the next games we plan to play. It worked out nicely because six of the new teams are truly elite and ranked much higher than the other 20 new teams. 

Therefore those six get a bye and we will have them in 30-team pods. For example, the 16-seed Florida State (1968) will play the 17-seed Centenary out of Louisiana (1976) and the winner will play our 1-seed in this tournament Michigan 1993 - the famous Fab 5 led by Chris Webber.

The next pod down is an interesting match-up - if Kevin Durant can help Texas win an in-state battle with Tiny Archibald and UTEP, then he would face his long-time NBA teammate Russell Westbrook at UCLA.

After winning our third Value Add Basketball Game tournament, Western Kentucky's 1966 moves up to 39th in our all time rankings. Based on their cards we started them ranked as the 169th best all-time team. If we used a formula very close to that at www.kenpom.com then they would have moved up, but only to 56th. This is because we basically use Pomeroy's formula (as close as we can replicate it from watching it play out), but we give an extra 4 points for winning a game or subtract 4 when a team loses.

The following updates our rankings of the top 200 all-time teams in our game. We list the three teams to win our tournaments so far, then the other 14 teams still undefeated in our current tournament of mainly newer teams we built, and then the remaining 183 teams who have lost at least one game. We track all game results and rankings here.

The following is the explanation for each header:

Rank - our current ranking for the team, which is adjusted up or down after every game based on if they win or lose, the margin, and the strength of schedule (how tough the opponents have been).

Card - How good we actually believe the team is based on their cards.

Pom - The approximate www.kenpom.com rating, which is the same as Rank except teams do not get an extra 4 points for winning or lose points for losing.

Year played.

Player - their best known player.

Conference - the Conference they will be in for the 2024-25 season under realignment, regardless of the conference they were in at the time. We did use "P12" for both Pac-12 and potential partner Mountain West.

W - wins in our games so far.

L - Losses in our games so far.

Sc - Average points scored in our games so far.

All - Average points allowed in games so far.

SOS- Strength of Schedule, how tough their opponents were.

This month we have had 14,947 unique visitors, the fourth most in the history of the blog, and if we have our sixth straight day of at least 1,000 unique visitors we would break the all-time record with more than one-third of the month to go.

Chamberlain's Late Dunk Lets Kansas Survive Past MSU on Buzzer Beating Dunk, 71-69

One of our six new teams nearly started our latest 8-team tournament with an upset, as the 2005 Mississippi State's rotating 7-footers drew four fouls on Wilt Chamberlain. A 3-pointer from Lawrence Roberts, a future NBA player who would hit 14 of 15 free throws to beat the Celtics in a game a couple of years later two weeks after going 8 of 11 from the floor at Denver to beat the Nuggets, made it 59-55 Mississippi State..

Roberts has 12 points and 7 rebounds and helped the two 7-footers hold Wilt to 20 and 11. Well below his averages.

Winsome Frazier hit a 3-pointer to start the game, and another one later, as the 1957 squad only had one 3-pointer the entire game. There were no 3-pointers in 1957, but we do estimate them based on various factors for those player cards. 

However, you will notice on Wilt's card that centers from the pre-3-pointer era have a spot for the traditional 3-point play on a basket while being fouled. That was a key to the rally in the closing minutes, as Kansas did have a big edge on the boards. Despite the four fouls, Wilt scored off an offensive rebound and was fouled, hitting the free throw to make it 60-59 Kansas with 9 possessions 5 minutes to go), and John Parker added a traditional 3-point play later while Gene Elstun kept several possessions alive with offensive rebounds.

Still on the next to late possession Wilt missed two free throws to leave the game tied 69-69, but he grabbed a rebound on the final Mississippi State possession and dunked at the other end for the 71-69 survival to the next round.

Note that the Kansas Dunk Range was 51-56, while they held Mississippi State to a Stop range of 51-52, meaning those two rolls were an automatic missed shot for the player with the ball and defensive rebound. That is arrived at by a table in the Value Add Basketball Game rules, where Kansas dunk range of 51-58 combined with the MSU defense range of +1 for a 51-61 on the chart. Meanwhile the Mississippi State dunk range of 51-55 adjusted by the Kansas defense range of -6 results in a 51-51 STOP range. However, you are always allowed to adjust the teams dunk range by the same amount before the game and we prefer to keep the ranges both in the 50s if possible. In this case taking away one dunk number from Kansas to make them 51-56 is done along with making MSU's dunk range one worse as well - in this case increasing it to a STOP range of 51-52.

The dunk range is essential for every game because it not only adjusts for level of competition but also for eras. In the 1950s shooting percentages were much lower than today, and of course the 3-pointer wasn't in place though we do estimate ranges.

 The results of the tournament featuring our eight new teams in the Value Add Basketball Game features the most Mississippi State team to advance in the NCAA playing Wilt Chamberlain and the 1957 National Runners--up.

We will ad results after the game is played, but for the preview here are the two teams from the game. Here are the screen shots of the two teams. There are four lists of teams, so first we went to the google doc List B - Gonzaga 2017 to Marquette 2011 VABG Teams and printed page 17 with the Kansas squad below.  Then we went to List C - Marquette 2023 to San Francisco 1956 VABG Great Teams and printed page 18 below for Mississippi State.

Since we just posted the image of MSU 2005 and five other new teams here, I pulled back to show what you should see on your screen when you go to print. We recently posted the updated cards for the four greatest shot blockers of all time including Wilt Chamberlain on this post New Shot Block Category for Olajuwon, Chamberlain, Russell and the Admiral,  and below we added the rest of his team.

Kansas 1957 started our season ranked 20th all-time in the game, but dropped a good bit with a lopsided 57-80 loss to Elvin Hayes and Houston 1968, the one team that upset Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and UCLA in the "Game of the Century." They evened their record at 1-1 with a 78-68 win over Oklahoma State 2004, so return to that era to try to get a second straight win. 

This is the debut in the game for Mississippi State 2005, which does counter Wilt with two 7-footers and a few great outside shooters in Jamall Edmondson, Shane Power and Winsome Frazier. That combo destroyed Stanford and their three players 6'10 or taller 93-70 in the NCAA tournament before losing to Duke. The buzz on Stanford's campus that year on the only women's team to finish ranked No. 1, though they won the women's national title three other seasons included their 2021 team featured in our game.
