Braves' Soler and Rodriguez Debut vs. DBacks in Statis-Pro

The Braves made two more trade deadline applications to follow-up on the Joc Pederson acquisition and continue to try to offset some of their touch injuries this season. We added those players to the Braves' Statis-Pro stack of active cards and took Eduardo Escobar (now with Brewers) and Joakim Soria (now with Blue Jays) from the Diamondbacks stack. All updated rosters we made to our game are listed in this previous blog by team.

Rodgriguez, one of the players upgraded to pb 2-9 when we reviewed all ERAs and OPSs. The Braves led 9-4 after 8 innings in the opener and did not appear to need him until Tomlin gave up 3 runs and Rodriguez came in for the save. Soler went 3 for 4 in the opener with a homer, while Riley and Freeman led the Braves back from 2 behind in the 9th to a win in the nightcap.

The Braves took the series 4 games to 2 as shown below. The DBacks also were the last team to face the Nats before the Nats sell off, losing those games 5-1 to end up 42-48 after noth series.

Team-by-team Players Added or Taken from Our Statis-Pro Baseball Teams

The Major League Baseball trade deadline was Friday afternoon. The following is a list of players we moved from team-to-team, or we added or dropped from our the team based on the player likely to miss at 60 straight days (for the Mets Carrasco was out to this rule and just came back this week, but deGrom's latest injury means he might miss 60 straight - so in our game we just added Carrasco, but will not us deGrom until he pitches again in real life.

First, to see which Statis-Pro cards we added to a team's stack of cards, look down the right column for your team.

Scherzer, Trea Turner debut for Dodgers Against Reds

If you go to the Statis-Pro Baseball game and click on the pitchers cards and then the hitters cards, you can find the players in recent transactions and put them on the correct team.

In the debut for Trea Turner and Max Scherzer, the Dodgers won 3-1 and 12-6 against the Reds, who debuted reliever Justin Wilson. The second game did not count as a sweep because the Dodgers led 10-6 after 8 innings (you must lead by 5 at the end of 8 innings for a sweep).

The series moves the Dodgers within 2 games of the 1st place Brewers and a first round bye in the playoffs. It also knocks the Reds one game out of the last wildcard spot.

The scoresheet is at the bottom, but firet the cards for the new players for each team, starting with the Dodgers.

The Reds needed two of there four New York players, Justin Wilson whose card was with the Mets though he was with the Yankees until the trade, and then Luis Cessa who also came from the Yankees.

Value Add Basketball Game Log

We decided to keep one log of all the Value Add Basketball Games being played. We also are keeping a google sheet that will also track the strength of opponents faced and other information. We list each game twice, one with the winner first and one with the loser first, so you can scan alphabetically to find your team and see how many they have won or lost, and against which opponent.

Key Trades, Long-Term Injuries so you can Adjust Statis-Pro Rosters

A day in airports, so no Statis-Pro games played. However, here are some Statis-Pro cards we are moving to developments during this past few days.

We mentioned Adam Frazier moving to the Padres after it happened too late to add him to a Padres series we played. However, the others listed above happened since then, and we expect many more in the final hours before this Friday afternoon trade deadline, which really is a deadline this year.

1st Divisional Standings on Day Ace after Ace Shelled - Brewers Lengthen 1st Plat3 Lead

Four of the best starting pitcher cards in our NL Statis-Pro baseball game qnd even Hader in relief were all shelled as.the Brewers edge the Padres in 2 slugfests to move further ahead in 1st. We had played the series before the Padres added All-Star Adam Frazier at 2nd base, so he did not play in this series.

Before showing that scoresheet, we just updated our google sheet that tracks the season with the grid below. As you can see, we broke the grid into our two divisions, with a "North/West" Division putting the Milwaukee Brewers and Chicago Cubs down the road with the Western teams, while St. Louis ends up with the East Coast  teams all the way down South to Atlanta to give us two equal divisions of five teams each for the duration. The winner of each division will get a bye, like the AL counterparts, while the next four teams will be the wildcards (we have one more wild card then the actual MLB).

Brewers/Padres After Marlins 2nd Upset to Threaten Cards Playoff Spot in McFarland Debut

The headliner for the 11th NL Series is the superb pitching match-ups between the Brewers and Padres. The only other series remaining going into Sunday was the Marlins and Cardinals - and that was a surprise (see below for game stories).

The Cardinals last chance to play one of the five relegated teams did not go well, as they lost a series to the Marlins. In a battle of All-Stars, the Cards' Arenado homered twice off Rogers to help the Cardinals pull off a 3-0 win.

However, the Marlins destroyed the Cardinals bullpen for five runs in the 7th and 8th inning to take a 5-0 lead after they batted in the 8th. Bleier then managed to strand Carlson on third base in the bottom of the 8th to preserve SWEEP credit for the second game and thus credit for a four games to two series win. The Cards finished just 12-12 against the four relegated NL teams. Overall NL teams are 101-67 for a .601 winning percentage against relegated teams.

They finish against the Brewers, Giants and Dodgers before we truly cut it down to divisional play.

To get credit for the Sweep under our league rules, the Marlins could not bring in closer Garcia in the 8th after Carlson doubled and reached third base on a grounder with just one out in the 8th. SWEEP credit is only given if a teams wins after leading at the end of eight innings by at least five runs AND no using their closer (defined as available reliever with the lowest ERA).

Mets' Rich Hill, 41, Debut Spoiled By Last Place Pirates

The 1st place Mets added Rich Hill asa 3rd starter, and he gave them five shutout innings in his Statis-pro debut. However, Polanco hit a 3-run homer in the 6th Saturday and the Pirates won 3-2, then won 4-2 in the second game.

The Mets stull have the best Statis-pro NL record at 50-34. Unlike in real baseball, the Statis-pro Mete have been almost at full strength. Our league rules dictate the only player cards we do not use are players not on the roster or players on the 60 day DL or who appear are in the process of missing 60 straight days.

Sunday Hill made his real debut against the Blue Jays', with the injury-riddled team is still forst in the NL East at 51-44.

Videos of Fast Action Cards; Introduced to Cut Hoops Games to 45 Minutes; Baseball to 30

The sharpest images of the Fast Action Cards are here in dropbox. Here is the front-and-back of one 4-sided card.

Decades ago the Statis-pro baseball game was revolutionized by putting the dice rolls and other results on Fast Action cards. These cards were then further advanced with 4-sided cards that let you play and entire 2-game series by flipping the results on the black font side of the card, then blue, then green, then red.

Today we introduced the same color scheme to 4-sided Fast Action Cards cards for Value Add Basketball Game.

These three back-to-back videos, lasting just more than two minutes total, show how to use the cards for each - as we play the New York Mets' debut of just acquired Rich Hill against the Pirates.

Right below that game we flip the first new basketball Fast Action cards as we start a game between two basketball Cinderella's - the 1985 miracle Villanova national champs and the 2011 miracle Final 4 run by Shaka Smart's VCU.

With these cards we often play two 9 inning baseball games in less than an hour total, and a college basketball game between teams from 1943 to current teams in 45 minutes.

Print Fast Action Cards for Value Add Basketball Game

Click here for Fast Action Cards in dropbox for the sharpest images to print them front-and-back (15 sheets of paper) to use them rather than dice to play the Value Add Basketball Game.

If you cannot access drop box for any reason, you can also click on them in this google file version or you can print this (print at about 175%, front and back) to print one front-and-back page of these instructions, and then another 15 pages front and back (30 pages total). However, the print quality is not nearly as good as the drop box version in the top paragraph.

Click here for full instructions for the game, however this blog gives basic instructions for printing these cards and using them to replace rolling dice.

One you have printed the cards, look to see if the horizontal lines on each page on the front and back line up fairly closely. If so, cut along those horizontal lines on each of the 15 pages, which leaves you a total of 144 cards - each card with a section with both black and red type on one side, and with blue and green type on the other side.

Now you are ready to use these cards instead of dice in the game.

If you print on normal thin paper, the cards may be hard to shuffle like a deck of cards. We suggest you either flip cards one at a time on a bed or floor, or throw them into a salad bowl and flip them around.

To start the game you can either stack the cards or simply leave them scattered in a salad bowl.

Use BLACK, then BLUE then GREEN then RED sections of 144 FAST ACTION CARDS for results. However you initially set up the stack of cards, start the game by pulling out the first card and putting it down like the cards are pictured below. On the first time through the deck, always use the BLACK font type for the results. By the time you get through the deck the first time, all 144 cards will all be lined up with the section with the black font type in the top left. Simply slide the cards to the left and start to flip the cards over and now the side with the blue font will show up every time. Once you get through the deck again you can slide the deck to the left again, and flip it over this time, and start to flip again, and now the side with the green font will show up each time. Once through this deck the final time, simply slide the deck to the left one more time, and as you start to flip the side with the red font will show up every time. Normally the game will end with plenty of red section results yet to be flipped over, however if a game with extra overtimes or many offensive rebounds leads to you going through the deck four times you can either reshuffle or begin to randomly pull cards out of the middle of the deck to finish the game.

TOP 2 LINES OF CARD.

If the sections with black font below appeared in order in a game, the game would start like this; 1) On the first Fast Action Card played refer only to the top two lines of the section with black font. On the first card pictured below, the top line indicates a blocked shot IF any defender has an (all) in the block section of his card, which on different sets of cards could be a block range that reads "21-26 (32)" or "21-26 (all)" or "21-30."

Most teams will not have a shot blocker this good, and the second line on the same card tells us who on the offense has the ball and can shoot if nothing happens on the top line. On the first card below, the ball goes to the "8" player (as indicated in the VABG Rules, while you should place a coin on each of the five players in the game at any point, the three players with a dime on their card get the ball in order as the "6," "7" or "8" number on the 8-sided die or on these cards, so the third player with a dime on his card would get the ball in this case if the shot was not blocked.

MIDDLE LINE ON CARD. If he gets to shoot, then flip to the next card to read the middle number of 1-20 to get one of five results on their card; making a 3-pointer, making a 2-pointer, getting fouled , missing a 3-pointer or missing a 2-pointer. In the case of the second card below, the middle number is "15" which will be a missed shot for almost every player.

BOTTOM LINE OF CARD. The bottom line of the card is only used if a shot or foul shot is missed and you need to determine which player got the rebound. Assuming a shot was missed on the 15 on the 2nd card below, the bottom line on the third card indicates that the defensive SF (small forward, third player from left to right in the game" gets the rebound IF a "5" is in his range of 1-6. If the Offensive SF has a lower range - e.g. Defensive Rebound 1-4 - the the opposing Offensive SF gets the rebound instead. Not that on the scoresheet provided in the VABG game, the bottom line is only used on the possessions that are shaded.  On the other possessions that are not shaded, the defense always gets the rebound and the scoresheet indicates which defender grabbed the rebound.

Once the possession ends for the team with the ball (made basket or free throw, turnover or defensive rebound), write down the updated score for that team at the end of that possession, and start the process over at the top of the next card to start the possession for the other team.
