New Shot Block Category for Olajuwon, Chamberlain, Russell and the Admiral

We found that 19 all-time shot blockers from among our 1,825 players in the Value Add Basketball Game blocked so many shots that we had to create a new category on their cards even better than the 21-26, 32 all blocked shot range.

Due to further research, the four greatest shot blockers of all time - Houston 1983 - Hakeem Olajuwon (Houston 1983), Kansas 1957 - Wilt Chamberlain (Kansas 1957), David Robinson (Navy 1986) and Bill Russell (San Francisco 1956) feature a new blocked shot range of 21-26, 32, 65-66 meaning the block any opposing players shot on the court on a 32, 65 or 66. However, one caveat is that if it turns out the opposing player would have attempted a 3-pointer then a 32 does block the shot but a 65 or 66 do not - they only block  2-point shots.

The calculation we found set these four players at the top and another 15 just below them were players how had stamina to stay on the court against high level teams and blocked about one in seven opposing 2-point shots by the other team (14% on www.kenpom.com), blocked at least 125 shots in a college season or averaged more than 2.75 blocks per game in an NBA game, or before blocked shots were tabulated averaged well over 20 rebounds per game year after year.

The blocked shots on 65 and 66 are the new features, though not that in the game that a home team can flip the results of a 36 or 66 result, so they can turn a 66 blocked shot into an unfair foul call.

In the four years since inventing the Value Add Basketball Game, only 66 of 1,825 player cards received the highest possible block rating. Typically, when a 1-5 is rolled and the ball goes to the position the shot blocker is guarding (normally a “5” for the center) the shot blocker had a 20% chance of blocking the shot, with any roll of 21-26 or 32 – the numbers in the best block range.

When one of the other four opposing players got the ball on a 1-5 roll, the shot blocker still had a 3% chance of blocking the shot because the “32” allowed him to block a shot by any player.

And finally, when the ball went to one of the go-to players on a 6-8 on the 8-sided die, a chart in the game shows that the 21-26, 32 perfect blocking rating blocks the shot 8% of the time, with a 21-23 blocked shot.

it those players are guarding the player who gets the ball, they block they have a one in five chance to blocking the shot with any roll of 21-26 or 32. Because the “32” is a “block all” number, they also had a 3% chance of blocking one of the other four offensive players on the court.

The four best ever – Blocked Shots 21-26 & all on 32, 65-66

Houston 1983 - Hakeem Olajuwon

Kansas 1957 - Wilt Chamberlain

Navy 1986 - David Robinson

San Francisco 1956 - Bill Russell

We believe these four are far and away the greatest shot blockers in NBA history. In the years before blocked shots were a stat in the NBA or college, we assume the average 1 blocked shot for every 8 rebounds. An average of 2.75 blocked shots shots per NBA game generally leads the league, and if hte 8 to 1 ratio was accurate then Wilt Chamberlain topped that mark 9 of his first 10 years in the NBA and averaged slightly more than Bill Russell, who would have topped 2.75 his first seven years.

Since they've kept the stat, Hakeem Olajuwon and David Robinson have clearly been the greatest. They are the only two players to block 200 shots in a college season, and are both tied for the record with 207. In the pros, Olajuwon just topped Robinson with the third best average ever at 4.59 to Robinson's 4.49. The only three to top those two in an NBA season (nark Eaton, Manute Bol and Elmore Smith) had a total of 27 D1 college blocked shots between them to 454 for Olajuwon.

The Next 15 Greatest of All-Time

The other 15 all-time elite in the game (of 1800 players in our game) with Blocked Shots 21-26 & all on 32 and 66

Connecticut 2004 - Emeka Okafor - 156 blocks the season before this great team.

Georgetown 1984 - Patrick Ewing - 135 blocked shots in college the year after this team.

Jacksonville 1970 - Artis Gilmore - they weren't keeping the stat yet when he was in college, but put up 3.08 per game to lead the NBA.

Kentucky 2012 - Anthony Davis - averaged blocking 14% of all opponents shots, for 186 total for the season, and then led the NBA with 2.94.

LSU 1992 - Shaquille O'Neal - blocked 157 shots that LSU season.

Louisville 2013 - Gorgui Dieng - blocked 128 shots the year after this championship team.

Marquette 1994 - Jim McIlvaine - blocked 142 shots for this team.

St. Peter's 2021 - KC Ndefo - averaged blocking 14% of all opponents shots this year of the most surprising NCAA run in history.

Seton Hall 2020 - Ike Obiagu - averaged blocking 16% of all opponents shots.

Stanford 2008 - Brook Lopez - still incredible 15 years after this college season ended by leading the NBA with 2.83 blocked shots per game.

Syracuse 1987 - Derrick Coleman - blocked 127 shots after this season.

UCLA 1967 - Kareem Abdul-Jabbar - still were not keeping the stat in college, but eight years later in the NBA was still dominating with an incredible 4.12 blocked shots per game.

UCLA 1972 - Bill Walton- like Kareem five years early, still did not have the benefit of blocked shots being recorded in college but led the NBA with 3.25 per game a couple of years after Kareem led the league.

Virginia 1981 - Ralph Sampson - an incredible 157 blocked shots in college before teaming up with Hakeem for the most dominant defensive twin towers in history for a short career.

Wake Forest 1996 - Tim Duncan - blocked 135 shots the season before this one.

We track the results of our games between the 183 great teams in the game in this google sheet.

Winslow 23/10 Mismatch Gives 2015 Duke 75-73 Win vs. Marquette 2023

Kam Jones sent Marquette to our Sweet 16 of new Value Add Basketball Game teams as one of the only players who could have avoided a turnover on a "41" roll to then hit a 3-pointer at the horn to beat Creighton 94-93 and set up a game with Duke's 2015 national champs.

While Marquette had a disappointing 2nd round loss to Michigan State last year and Duke exploded to the title in 2015 - heading into that tournament Duke was ranked #5 by the AP and #6 at www.kenpom.com while basically the same team right now is ranked #3 by the AP and #5 at www.kenpom.com after Tuesday night's win vs. Southern - which I attended.

The mismatch appears to be based on NBA talent, where Duke 2015 may be the only team in our game with eight NBA players. However, even this is interesting since we mark players as "NBA" if they either played in the league or are forecast to go in one of the next two NBA drafts at NBADraft.net.  Marquette had only one NBA player in the game in Olivier-Maxence Prosper, however that changed recently. Kam Jones moved into a projected 2025 2nd round pick, and then this week he was moved up to a projected 2024 projected pick and Oso Ighodaro shot all the way to the top of the 2nd round in the 2024 draft and on the verge of being projected as a 1st rounder.

In this game, Marquette led only a few times in a back-and-forth stretch starting with 22 possessions left (13:11) when Olivier-Maxence Prosper scored to make it 52-50 Marquette, through the 16th possession left when Justise Winslow stole a pass and scored on the fast break to put Duke ahead for good 57-56.

As great as Jones' card is, a mismatch was created because Marquette starts three pure guards with little rebounding, while the 6'6 powerful Winslow is one of three overpowering frontline Duke players (6'11 Jahlil Okafor and 6'9 Amile Jefferson are the others even after 7'0 Marshall Plumlee plays the opening minutes. When a defensive rebound opportunity came to Jones on the rebound chart he never got it because his 1-0 range (meaning no roll on the 6-sided die), meaning Winslow always go the offensive rebound, while when the rebound chart came to the chart gave the rebound chart gave Winslow the chance as the offensive small forward he also got it with his 1-6.

Note on the scoresheet that every other possession the ball automatically goes to a defensive player, so when Duke missed on possession 27 and 6 the rebound they went to Jones. However, Winslow towered over Jones to grab eight rebounds to those two and this included sticking it back in at the half for a 34-32 lead, and twice again in the second half. But the true killer was when Okafor grabbed an offensive rebound and kicked it out to Winslow, who hit a 3-pointer due to s shot off an offensive rebound lowering the 20-sided die one number which meant a "3" was a 3-pointer made instead of a 2-pointer  to give Duke a 65-58 lead with 12 possessions (6:26) left in the game.

Marquette would rally to cut it within 71-73, and fouled Amile Jefferson twice at the end for a chance at the win. Jefferson is only a 1-11 on the 20-sided die to make a free throw (55%) but he hit all four at the end to pull out the 75-73 win. Here is the box score and photo of the sheet, followed by the entire Sweet 16 match-ups.

A total of 364 US colleges put (or will put) a Division I basketball team on the court between the 2022-23 and 2024-25 season, and 32 of those teams will change conferences during those three seasons. If you hare having trouble keeping track of where your college now plays, here is an alphabetical list with each school followed by its conference last season (2022-23), this season and as planned for next season (2024-25).

The full names of conferences are listed at the bottom of the blog. The number after the conferences "Seed 23" shows if the team made the NCAA tournament last year and if so their seed in the tournament. After that we show their ranking among all the teams at www.kenpom.com. For example, near the top you will see Alabama remains in the SEC, was one of the four best teams last year as a 1-seed, and is now ranked as the 5th best team in the country. And finally they are "stable" while a team changing conferences during the three years - like Arizona and Arizona State going from the Pac 12 to the Big 12 further down - are listed as "change."

Classic to the Buzzer: Coach K's Last Duke Team vs. Hurley's UConn Champs

Coaching royalty on this one so we wrote in their names on their team sheets for our Value Add Basketball Game tournament.

If this were an actual game it would have ended UConn's current streak of 22 straight double digit wins against non-Big East foes.

Coach Kryzewski's last team, Duke 2022, scored cut the UConn lead to a single score on 9 of their final 12 possessions, but UConn responded with a basket every time until their final possession.

In that one Wendell Moore was fouled shooting and hit both free throws to cut it to 80-77.
Duke the forced a turnover from Tristen Newton to leave Duke with one last chance to try for a 3-pointer. When a team uses this strategy they double the 3-point made range as long as for every 3-point made roll they add one 2-point made can be turned into a miss and automatic defensive rebound.

The ball went to Trevor Keels on a 3 on the 8-sided die roll meaning his normal 1-3 range for making a 3 and 4-8 for making a 2 on the 20-sided die was changed to the following.

1-5 three-pointer made, 6 a normal 2-pointer missed with chance at a rebound and 7-8 now desperate miss with opponent getting rebound automatically. In fact it was a 16 for a normal 3-pounter missed but still leaving the chance for an offensive rebound.

The rebound roll was 18 on the 20-sided die (meaning defensive shooting guard has the chance for the rebound) and then a "4" on the 6-sided die meaning the number had to be in that range or the defensive sg would fail to get the ball and it would go to the offensive sg.

Many SGs have a smaller range since 1-3 is average for all players and guards are usually lower. However UConn's Andre Jackson is a 1-5 as one of UConn's typical giant guards (6 foot 6) so he grabbed it and UConn advances to survive as the 1-seed after setting a record I t he previous game  for the lowest fewest points every allowed in our.game.with a 77-39 win over St. Peter's.

In addition to the two incredible coaches, this may be the best four centers I've had in a game. Obviously Adama Sanogo is an All-American Center, but he battled Mark Williams who has one of the best few scoring cards in the game going up to 16 of 20 to be fouled or score. And as for the backups, I watched UConn's Donovan Clingan put up 20 against Marquette when Sanago was in foul trouble, and I watched many of Theo John's almost 200 blocked shots before he left Marquette for his last season at Duke, where both he and Williams had the perfect blocked shot card with 21-26, 32, meaning on a 32 the block the shot no matter who on the opposing team is shooting.

After focusing on the 32 current all-conference teams over Thanksgiving, we flashed back to the 1976 Rutgers team against the true Twin Towers from Stanford 2008 in Brook Lopez and Robin Lopez in the Value Add Basketball Game.

Stanford took the early lead 38-35 with the big edge on the glass through the 33rd possession (counting down to 1). However, from possessions 32 to 18 Brook Lopez and Lawrence Hill rest, and during that time Rutgers came up with four of their 10 steals for a 19-13 run to take a 56-51 lead before the two returned, and they kept the lead the rest of the way for an 84-74 win to advance to our Elite 8.

Rutgers in the No. 2 seed in this tournament behind only UConn 2023. in 1976 they were one of two teams to make it all the way to the Final Four undefeated, but Indiana won it all to become the last undefeated champion in NCAA history.

Here is the box score.
