Dylan Cease threw 7 innings of no-hit ball to koom like the pitcher who has finished in the top 4 in Cy Young voting two or the last three years and
Fernando Tatis Jr. looked every bit the 2nd most valuable player in baseball (as he is in actual baseball WAR) with a 2-run homer and another hit to lead the Padres to a 5-0 revenge win for the 2-13 loss to the Giants in the Statis-Pro opener.
In the loaded NL West the Padres and Giants are within one game of the Dodgers, and with our league rules both teams received credit for a 3-game sweep against the other so both are now 3-3.
Mike Yastrzemski did lead off the 8th inning with a single to break up the no hitter.
PETCO Park almost cost the Padres the sweep in the game, as a sweep requires a team being ahead by 5-runs by the end of the 8th inning. After
Manny Machado homered in the bottom of the 6th to make it 3-0 Padres,
Gavin Sheets walked and
Brandon Lockridge hit a DEEP drive on his card, at which point the 11-88 random number determines if the drive is a homer or deep fly with all runners advancing. The "28" would have been out of almost any park, even San Francisco (11-31 homer) but in PETCO the 11-24 home run range made it a fly out.
However Tatis hit his 2-run homer the next inning to get the 5-0 lead before the 8th inning to get the sweep after all and match the Giants 1st game sweep to finish the 2-game series with both teams 3-3.
In our league we play all home-and-away series with each reliever allowed to play one of two games, as shown on the screen shot below the box score with links to the players.
The WAR column indicated the players who were ranked as one of the 200 most valuable players at the end of one month in the actual season, so the first three Giants pitchers in this game were all ranked, but three of their batters were ranked in the top 200 and the Padres Tatis was ranked No.2 of all players.
