Dr. J Debuts Against the Modern Transfer Portal Team Utah St.

 Developing ... We will finally debut the first super star for many of us - Dr. J - Julius Erving. WWe can't recreate his highlight dunks, but his 20 rebound a game college career stat must be the best of any small forward.

However he never led the nation since he overlapped with Artis Gilmore.

He faces a modern phenom - the Utah State 2024 team that will go in as a favorite with a team of all transfers playing together for the first time and going all the way to the second round of the NCAA while Dr. J was in an amazing NIT.

Cornbread Maxwell Leads UNCC to 95-68; 47 Yrs After 1 Second Short of NCAA Title Game

Cornbread Maxwell and Charlotte (UNCC) destroyed New Mexico 95-68 in a 30-minute Value Add Basketball Game 47 years after just missing a chance to beat UNC for the National title on this miraculous play. We may have under rated Charlotte, as we noticed during the game that Cornbread's card is one of the best few of the 2,000 player cards in our game.

For us Marquette fans, this Butch Lee to Jerome Whitehead length of court pass and score was a much greater finale then even Grant Hill to Christian Laettner. For Charlotte fans they can only ask if instant reply were in place if the basket would have been disqualified for the ball touching Whitehead's hand a second time off the backboard.

In that game, Maxwell led a defense that held Marquette below 40% shooting as he had an epic battle with another future NBA big man Whitehead in which neither of the player rested a minute. Maxwell hit 5 of 6 shots, 7 of 9 free throws and grabbed 12 rebounds, while Whitehead hit 10 of 16 and 1 of 2 free throws with 16 rebounds. As the video shows, Maxwell actually got his hands on the full court pass to almost force overtime 49-49, but the bigger Whitehead (6-10, 220 to Maxwell's 6-8, 205) got the deflection and put it in for the game winner Marquette went on to beat UNC two days later for the 1977 title.

There was no need for a last second dice roll in this Value Add Basketball Game. We knew Cornbread (Cedric Maxwell) was awesome both at UNCC and then for more than a decade in the NBA - including leading the entire NBA in shooting percentage two of his first three years in the league. The next year (1981) the all-time field goal percentage leader Artis Gilmore arrived to dominate that stat, as Maxwell finished 3rd behind him and Darryl Dawkins with 59% of his shots made and then went onto lead the Celtics at MVP of the NBA Finals for one of his two titles.

On this day, the greatest of the awesome New Mexico teams of the 1960s and 1970s that won their first NCAA title game in this 1974 season was no match. This was the year the home arena of the "Pit" became famous as Lobos attendance surged into the top five in the nation in attendance. The team not only won their first NCAA tournament game but after a loss to San Francisco won the consolation game against Dayton and finished #18 in the coaches poll after surging as high as #8 after a 12-0 start.

The Lobos averaged an incredible 84 points per game that season, while the defense for both teams was a little more suspect as a +1 dunk adjustment. That calculated to a 51-58 dunk range for New Mexico and a 51-55 for Charlotte - but we often adjust both downward a couple of keep the dunk ranges both in the 50s, so we played as New Mexico 51-56 and Charlotte as 51-53.

For a while it appeared Cornbread might outrebound the entire New Mexico team, as he finished with 11 rebounds to give Charlotte one of the most lopsided rebound margins in any of our games - 34-18.

They will face John Calipari's UMass, which was our No. 1 seed but looked far less impressive in barely surviving hot 3-point shooting by Liberty University. While 3-point shooting is not that big a factor in games between teams in the 1970s, though we do estimate some 3 pointers made. In this case, Maxwell's teammate who would also make the NBA, Chad Kinch, did hit three 3-pointers.

Here is the box score. Third first dice were rolled at 4:31 Central on Sunday, and final dice roll on which Lew Massey grabbed the final rebound occurred at 5:01 pm CT for a quick 30-minute blowout.

College Hoops 18 Greatest Teams In History of Other Conferences

The 18 great all-time teams that play in a conference that has fewer than six all-time great teams were put together in our "other teams" grouping. Our ratings are based on how the top 6 teams in each great conference have played against some of the greatest college basketball teams in history in the Value Add College Basketball Game (see details at the bottom) - and if we treated this group of other teams they would rank between the 7th best conference (the American Athletic) and the 8th best conference (the A10).

We have only played one game with the most exciting member of this group - Larry Bird who went up against Magic Johnson in perhaps the most important college basketball game in history.

The top 6 teams in this group so far have gone 6-8 against the other great all-time teams, and have a combined rating of 3.1. That means those teams average being 3.1 better than the average team IN THE GAME, but the average team in the game is about 21 points better than an average team.

Therefore the Gonzaga team's ranking of +8.7 means they are rated about 29.7 points better than the average team. That team narrowly missed the perfect season by losing the last game of the regular season to BYU, and then the title game to UNC.

The lists also features one Ivy League team - the Princeton squad that featured US Senator and Presidential candidate Bill Bradley.

While the West Coast Conference features three of the top five other teams, we only broke out conferences with at least six all-time great teams in the game. The other two great teams are the highest scoring team in the NCAA history, which is averaging winning 120-110 in their 1-1 start this year, and had the tragedy of Hank Gathers dying of a heart condition at the end of the season after having become the first player in history to lead the nation in rebounding and points. The third WCC team on the list is the great Bill Russell's 1956 team.

Seven current conferences have at least six all-time great teams in the game. We decided to rank those conferences based on the average rating of their top six teams so far in our games against other teams.

Phi Slama Jama Survive Artis Gilmore, Improves to #23 of 136 Great Teams

Houston's Phi Slama Jama (see ESPN trailer) overcame Hakeem Olajuwan fouling out guarding Jacksonville's Artis Gilmore (23 points, 9 rebounds) to win a game between national runners-up 74-67. 

You may notice on Gilmore's card that in the spot where most players make a 3-point shot, Gilmore and some great centers from the days no centers took 3-point shots scores a basket and draws a foul for a chance at a traditional 3-pt play.

The 180th game we've played since inventing the Value Add Basketball Game a couple of years ago propelled Houston up to 23rd in our rankings of the 136 great teams in the game, and advanced them to play #7 Kansas 1997 in the Elite 8 of our new tournament. Michael Young led the way with 21 scores and 3 steals in the win. During that season it was Young, not Clyde Drexler or Olajuwan, was the teams leading scorer.

With Olajuwan out with fouls, power forward Larry Micheaux saved the day with a 16-point, 14-rebound game against the two 7-footers for Jacksonville. In his real career Micheaux closed out his rookie NBA career with a 17-rebound, 5-steal game.

While UCLA won our original 96-team tournament, Kansas moved slightly ahead of them in our rankings with a series of lopsided wins against all-time great Big 12 teams.

Gathers Heart Attack after Alley-Oop Dunk; Could Highest Scoring Team Ever Have Won it All?

The North Carolina 1998 now has a +4.8 simulated KenPom rating to place 28th of the 136 great teams in the Value Add Basketball Game after clinging onto a 104-101 win against the highest scoring team in history - Loyola Marymount.

That was an outstanding defensive performance, believe it or not, as Loyola averaged the all-time record 122.4 points per game for the 1989-90 season behind All-Americans Bo Kimble and Hank Gathers. Loyola fans will never know if this team could have gone all the way because after completing an alley-oop dunk near the end of the season Gathers (who was only the 2nd player to lead the nation in both scoring and rebounding the year before) collapsed and died of a heart attack. The team still made the Elite 8 even without him before finally losing to No.2 UNLV.

In our game at full strength they had already defeated Dan Issel's Kentucky (1970) by a score of 138-116 to make this second round, but fell just short. Their rating of +2.0 means they are rated as 2 points better than the average great team in this game (which means about 22 points better than an average team), which ranks them 45th of our 136 great teams in the game.
