Acuna Homers Twice to Lead Venezuela to Sweep of Cuba, 2-1 and 9-5

Ron Acuna Jr. homered in both games of our Statis-Pro baseball all-time World Baseball Classic to lead Venezuela to 2-1 and 9-5 wins against Cub to move into second place in our Southern Division.

In the opening pitchers' duel featuring the two aces, Johan Santana went six innings allowing only one run for the win, while Ranger Suarez (Hold, 2 innings only 1 walk allowed) and closer Francisco Rodriguez (Save, 1 inning 2 hits allowed).

While we are still in all basketball mode, we resumed with a series two days before FS1 begins airing the World Baseball Classic on this week. These games are played using Statis-Pro Baseball, and we also have player cards for current players (based on projections) and 60 all-time great teams. The WBC team includes 12 teams or world countries, regions or US states. The only two teams that still need to play a series are Texas and Central America.

After each team has played six games (series against the other three), the three division winners get a bye through the second round to the championship round robin.

The other teams to advance (all 2nd place teams plus the third place team in the south) form a new 4-team playoff division and go through the same round robin of doubled headers in that playoff division. Only the team that wins that round robin advances to the championship round with the three division winners.

The tiebreakers in order are; 1) head-to-head, 2) lowest runs allowed, 3) most runs scored, 4) fewest innings at bat.

If you want to play any WBC games, follow these steps. First open the pitchers sheets, choose your team and define them like in the photo. Then do the same with the batters cards and the pitcher at bat cards. Here is the picture of the game with sheets for players. The number in each range represents the last number of each range for singles, doubles, triples, homers, deep drives that might be homers, strikeouts, etc.

18 All-Time Statis-Pro Pitchers for World Baseball Classic (11 countries, 5 states)

One of our most popular blog series played off the current Statis-Pro World Baseball Classic teams against each other. We decided we would go ahead and make an all-time set of Statis-Pro cards. We will features the best players from 5 non-US countries, then two groups of countries (Asia and Central America), and five US States for a 12 team league. I'm not sure when we will be done - but we did pull all the stats we needed and picked the players we will feature.

We gave each of the teams three closers who were lock down relievers. Then we set up a "rotation" of which we will probably start pitchers 1 to 4, then use the rest as middle relief to get to the starters. We will choose the batters next, but here are the batters.

The first four pitchers for each team are the pitchers in the order in which we would start them in our rotation. Then the next 11 could be started in that order or brought in in relief. Then the final three pitchers for each team are the closers I would save until the final inning. The red also breaks up the teams so you know a new team begins with the next player after the red - who I would designate as their Ace starter.

Key to standings - The best (1) through worst (10) team is noted in each of the following categories: best offense based on runs scored ("Off" DR 1st at 5.6 runs per game, Mexico last/10th at 2.7 runs per game), best defense ("Def" SEC 2.2 runs per game, ACC 5.3), most strike outs per start by starting pitchers (SEC 7.1, ACC 3.0), Most Home Runs per game (DR 2.5, Japan 0.8), Team batting average (ACC 0.280, Big-12 0.193), the ERA's for Starting Pitchers only (SEC 1.99, ACC 6.47).

When we get to the final two series we let the first place team playout to see if they clinch. If they do not then we let the second place team play out etc.

Venezuela fails to clinch, going 5-7 vs. the SEC and Pac-12 to finish 27-21. They were held to only 11 hits total in 2 games against the SEC, but did manage to score 3 runs in 7 innings against both Buehler and Scherzer to claim a split 3 games to 3. Suarez was the only player with three hits, including one HR, and D. Suarez threw 6 shutout innings before the bullpen lost, after Carrasco allowed only 1 run in 7 hits for the win. Pac-12 relievers threw 10 scoreless innings against Venezuela and completed the 4 games to 2 win when Jose Altuve could not come up with a clutch defensive play at 2nd base in the 10th inning off Conforto's hard grounder. The Pac-12 won the other game 6-2 on just 5 singles and doubles by Healy and Crawford.

Coming off the 4 games to 2 win against Venezuela, the Pac-12 is 22-20 heading into their final series against the Big-12. They own all the tiebreakers, so if they sweep 6 games to 0 they are Division Champs and play the Dominican Republic for the World title. If they go 5-1 they finish ahead of Venezuela, and win the division UNLESS the SEC goes 6-0.

Unless the Pac-12 goes 6-0 against the Big-12, the SEC at 22-20 will play the ACC with a chance to go to the championship, and they do own the tie-breaker against Venezuela (division record) but not against the Pac-12. If the Pac-12 goes 5-1 in the previous series, then the SEC can only win the division by going 6-0. If the Pac-12 goes 4-2 or worse, then the SEC can win the division with a 5-1 mark.

If both the SEC and Pac-12 go 4-2 or worse, then Venezuela wins the division and plays the Dominican Republic.

A walk off double by Muncy followed 2 earlier homers by Cron to give the Big 12 a 6-5 win and eliminate the Pac-12. The Pac-12 needed to pull out that game and then win their season finale by 5+ runs - a real possibility with Bauer on the mound. However the blew a 4-1 lead built after Cahna homered in the 1st and Crawford tripled and Lamb homered in the 2nd. With them out, the SEC will win the division if they go at least 5-1, and if not Venezuela will be crowned.

The SEC stayed alive with a thrilling back and forth 5-4 win. Three straight singles by Yastrzemski, Anderson and McCann gave the SEC a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the 7th, but Aaron Nola gave it back with a 2-run homer to Taylor to give the ACC a 4-3 lead.  It looked bleak with Chad Green coming in for the 8th, but Merrifield greeted him with a Homer, his real life Yankees teammate LeMahieu doubled, and Alonso doubled him home to give the SEC the 5-4 and let them live another day.

The ACC exploded in the 3rd and 4th innings on homers by Turner, Blackmon and Fisher to make it 4-0 in the SEC's finale. The SEC only averaged 3.2 runs a game this year (8th best if 10 teams) and that hole meant they would have needed to score 9 runs to get credit for the 5-run sweep and take the division from Venezuela. They scored only once despite a double and homer from McCann and three singles from LeMahieu, to fall 4-1 and let Venezuela back into the playoffs with a 27-21 mark.

The Dominican Republic (30-15 with a 3-game series left) will host Games 1, 2 and if necessary 6 and 7 against the 27-21 Venezuela.

The Dominican Republic came in averaging a league best 5.6 runs per game, but was shut down by Japan to fail to clinch with a 27-15 record. Earlier in the year Yu Darvish started the World Baseball Classic with a no-hitter, but his 8 innings of shut out ball in a 2-0 win over the Dominican Republic may have been more impressive. He allowed only 3 hits against the team that was hitting 0.274 (second in the league) and averaging 2.5 homers (1st). Japan averaged a league low 0.8 homers per game, but Ohtani led of the series with a homer. In the second game five Japanese pitchers likewise presented any homers, but Tatis tripled to lead of the 1st inning and then singled and stole to lead off the 4th to lead the 3-1 win that left the surprising 2nd place Japanese team 21-21 and alive for though needing to finish 6-0 and have the Dominican Republic finish 0-6.

The Dominican Republic did finally clinch in their next to last game, erupting against the light-hitting Mexican team (last place 2.7 runs per game) for an 11-2 win. The first three batters in the line-up dominated, as Lindor reached his first four times up, and Ramirez drove him in once iwth a single and once with a 2-run homer. Soto doubled and score twice. The Division-clinching win made the Dominican Republic 30-15, and will let them play All-Stars who have been riding the bench since the best any other team could do is 17-19 Cuba, which can finish no better than 29-19 even if they win out.

The Dominican Republic (30-15 with a 3-game series left) will host Games 1, 2 and if necessary 6 and 7 against the 27-21 Venezuela.

Dominican Republic and Venezuela Edging SEC in 10-team Statis-Pro Baseball; Click for Each Team's Summaries

The following are the results of our first 2 rounds of games using these Statis-Pro cards based on where players were born or played college baseball before making the majors. Each card is the same as the one that comes in the complete set of cards and how to play instructions.  Results of each game and grid of record against each team is on this google sheet (also includes SEC, 3, Japan 2, not reflected below).

These results are actually through four games for each team (winner gets credit for a 3-game sweep for wins by 5+ wins, or else 2 games to 1 win). You can search each team as listed below to find the summary of each of their games to date, as well as a picture of each scoresheet:

The defending champions Dominican Republic is tied for first in overall offense (6.3 runs scored per game) with the ACC and tied for first place (9-3) with defending runner up Venezuela. They are way ahead with 14 home runs, while Cuba is second with 10 homers, just ahead of Venezuela with 9. The top three batting averages (.300 for ACC, .293 for Dominican Republic and .288 for Venezuela) are 52 points better than the rest of the league. Bold indicates 1st place, italics for 2nd place, and underlined for 3rd place).

When the top 2 offenses match-up for two games, Marcel Ozuna hit three homers in one game and Fernando Tatis went 5 of 9 for the Dominican Republic, making him 7 for his last 14 with 3 homers. The ACC is powered by a hero from last year's World Series and from this year's World Series - the Nats' Trea Turner went 4 of 9 for the ACC and the Dodgers' Will Smith went 5 of 10 with 2 homers. For Venezuela, Peralta had two 3-run homers in one game, and Altuve went 4 of 8 in the same series. All details are below in the scoresheets and summaries. Cuba's sluggers include one of the best platoons ever with 2020 Playoff hero Randy Arozarena, who bats third against lefty and homered in his most recent game, and 2019 Rookie of the Year Yordan Alvarez (Astros) bats in the same spot against righties and homered in the next game.

Mexico was picked to finish last in the league, but their starters have done an incredible job of giving them 4 or 5 great innings for an 0.98 ERA, the best in the majors. However, in overall runs allowed per game they are only 3rd in overall runs allowed - giving up around 3 runs a game after the starter leaves for an overall average of 3.50 due to a number of players needing to play out of position in the field and weaker middle relieving until they get to great 8th and 9th inning closers. Agrazal, Gonzalez and Loasiga have all giving scoreless starts of between 4 and 6 innings, but do not have the endurance for long starts.

The SEC is the truly dominant pitching staff, with Scherzer (6 IP, 1 ER, 12 K), Gray (7,0,4) and Buehler (5.2, 1, 9) all dominating and only Woodruff (4,3,3) struggling a little the first time through the rotation. The Pac-12 may have the most dominant 1-2 punch with 13 strikeouts each for Bauer (8 innings, 1 run) and Cole (8,2) who had terrible defense behind him and was the hard-luck loser against the best start to date - Japan's Yu Darvish (no hitter with 13 strikeouts).

Sample Cards:

To give two examples if what the cards look like if you want to play your own games, Acuna's card shows he on Venezuela's team in this set, he was born in Venezuela, and in the MLB packet he is on Atlanta's team (Ven/Ven/ATL). Scherzer is on the SEC team, he pitched for the University of Missouri, and in the MLB set he is on the Washington Nationals.

The following is a summary of each game for each team. The teams are listed alphabetically and each game is listed in reverse chronological order:

ACC Games:

Dominican Republic 6, ACC 1 (Sweep). The Dominican Republic then scored 5 more in the first three innings of the second game, and held onto the sweep 6-1 to improve to 9-3 and drop the ACC to 6-6.

Dominican Republic 15, ACC 7 (sweep, max runs recorded in line is 10). After the ACC moved into 1st with a 6-0 mark by blitzing Cuba. The scored 7 more runs against the defending champion Dominican Republic, but it was not nearly enough. Ozuna hit 3 of the Champs 7 home runs - all in the first 5 innings, for the 15-7 win that gave them sweep credit and tied the two teams at 6-3.

ACC 9, Cuba 3 (sweep credit): The lack of pitching for Cuba became an alarm bell after a second straight sweep left them 0-6, having been outscored 17-6 in the two games. They have two of the top relievers in Chapman and Raisal Iglesias, but had to use them earlier in the game to get out of jams, and ran out of arms as Smith's 2nd homer or the game, a 3-run homer, made it 9-1 after 8 top secure the 5-run lead needed for a sweep. The other Iglesias, shortstop Jose, hit a 2-run homer in the 9th to add to Alvarez earlier homer, but they still fell short 9-3.

ACC 8, Cuba 3 (sweep credit): In the only offensive explosion in the first set of games with all aces pitching, the ACC jumped on Peacock (we let Cuba have Miami-born players) for 3 in the 1st and then a 3-run homer by Brad Miller (Clemson-St. Louis) helped the ACC get the 1st sweep (win after +5 lead after 8 innings).

Big-12 Games:

Big-12 5, Cuba 3. Arrieta (TCU) won the second game with 1 run allowed in 7 innings. The weak Big-12 bullpen surrendered a 2-run homer to Roberts in the 8th to cut it to 5-3, but that was the final.

Cuba 6, Big-12 3. Muncy (Baylor) led off the game with a Homer to start a 3 run first for the Big-12, but Perez settled down to not allow anything else, and Cuba's killer PB2-9s Iglesias and Chapman locked down Cuba's 1st win, 5-3. Robert homered in both games.

Big-12 5, Dominican Republic 4: The Big-12 used a 3-run pinch hit HR by Orf and a 2-run homer by Mayfield and then clung to a 5-4 win against the powerful defending champion Dominion Republic. Three DEEP drives by the Dominican Republic were all caught for long outs (we play these games as neutral batter-hitter parks, meaning each DEEP drive is a homer on a 11-48 or caught by the wall on a 51-88). Ramirez started the 9th with a homer, and then Marshall issued two walks to (like the SEC against Mexico in Game 2) but the winning run on base in the 9th, but Marshall induced a ground out by Cano to end the game.

Dominican Republic 5, Big-12 2: McBroom's 2-run homer off the defending champs ace Castillo gave the Big-12 a 2-0 lead. However Meija proved the hero for the Dominican Republic, reaching all 4 times including scoring the tying run after a single, and then delivering a 2-out, bases loaded single in the 7th, though he did take a wrong turn at 1st base and was thrown out.

Cuba (or Miami-born) Games:

The 2020 Playoff hero Randy Arozarena homered. He bats third against lefties, while 2019 Rookie of the Year Yordan Alvarez (Astros) bats in the same spot against righties, and would homer in the 5-3 loss.

Dominican Republic Games:

However Meija proved the hero for the Dominican Republic, reaching all 4 times including scoring the tying run after a single, and then delivering a 2-out, bases loaded single in the 7th, though he did take a wrong turn at 1st base and was thrown out.

Japan-S.Korea (and born in Hawaii) Games:

Venezuela 17, Japa-S.Korea (max 10 runs recorded on line). Peralta hit two 3-run homers and Venezuela's .432 batting average and 6 HRs were both the best batting marks of the 1st 2 series for any team (20 total games).

Venezuela 2, Japan-S. Korea 0. Lopez shut down Japan for 7 strong innings with 9 Ks, the turned it over to the dominant closers Castillo and Vazquez to complete the shutout, as Peralta's RBI double and Aguilar's homer provided the 2-0 wins.

Japan-S.Korea 11, Pac-12 3 (sweep, record max of 10). A rare offensive explosion from Japan was led by homers by Tsutsugo, Choi and Choo.

Japan-S. Korea 2, Pac-12 0: Darvish no-hit the Pac-12, and only missed a perfect game due to hitting Conforto with a pitch in the 4th. Cole had a duel no-hitter into the 6th despite terrible fielding, until Ohtani homered. Later in the inning Tsutsugo hit a grounder down the line that third baseman Lamb misplayed into an RBI double for the 2-0 final. Under the new stamina system Darvish PB dropped to a PB: 2-8 for the 8th and PB: 2-7 for the 9th (averages 5-6 innings per appearance, so his remaining SR is eliminated at the end of the next inning, the 7th).

Mexico (or Central American born) Games:

Pac-12 7, Mexico 6 (10 innings). The normally light-hitting Mexican team exploded in the 1st two innings with 2-run homers by L. Urias, Paredes and Kirk to take a 6-2, but the team's normal strength, the bullpen, let it slip away for a 2nd straight game. Healy went 4 for 4 including the RBI single in the bottom of the 9th to force extra innings and an earlier homer.

Pac-12 5, Mexico 1. Bauer dominated for 8 innings except for a HR by Kirk, but had to wait until he was pinch-hit for in the bottom of the 8th to go ahead, with his pinchhitter Semien delivering the key 2-run double. The normally dominant Osuna allowed 4 runs in the 8th without retiring an opposing batter.

Mexico 1, SEC 0: The Mexican pictures continued to look like Fernando Valenzuela, with four pitchers combining for a 3-hits shutout against the powerful SEC line-up. Second inning singles by R. Urias, R. Urias and then Arauz (whose grounder got past the 1st baseman) gave Mexico their only run to secure a surprise split. Gallego dodged a bullet in the 9th when Bradley and Alonso singled to put the winning run on base, and then Yastrzemski blasted a clutch batting foul home run, before striking out.

SEC 2, Mexico 1: Light-hitting Mexico led most of the way on a third inning homer by Arauz off of Schweizer (Mizzou), and the game ended with Camargo driving a clutch batting (BD) drive just foul that would have made it 3-2 Mexico.  However two Red Sox came though for the SEC with Bradley delivering one of his 3 hits to load the bases with 2 outs in the 6th then pinch hitter Benintendi  drawing and RBI-walk to break the shutout. J. McCann the led off the 8th with a Homer for the 2-1 win.

Pac-12 Games:

Pac-12 7, Mexico 6 (10 innings). The normally light-hitting Mexican team exploded in the 1st two innings with 2-run homers by L. Urias, Paredes and Kirk to take a 6-2, but the team's normal strength, the bullpen, let it slip away for a 2nd straight game. Puerto Rico (or New York born) Games:

SEC 5, Puerto Rico 3. Puerto Rico jumped to a 3-0 lead in the nightcap, but Alonso (Florida) hit 2 homers to tie it, and then in the 9th Renfroe, who hit a massive homer for the Rays in the real world series game, blasted a 9th inning walk off homer off closer Diaz. Based on the line-ups ops and starting rotations era, the loaded SEC was picked 2nd of 10 teams behind the Dominican Republic and just ahead of Venezuela. The series made them 7-5 in third place and expecting to contend - 2 games behind those two teams after 12 games.

SEC 4, Puerto Rico 0. The SEC road Gray's 7 innings if 3 hit ball to a 4-0 win, but Correa threw Yaz out at home on a grounder to third in the bottom of the 8th to prevent them from recording a 5-0 sweep. Because Puerto Rico has three Clutch Defense 5, gold glove nominees at shortstop, Lindor playa SS, Baez plays 2b and Correa plays 3b.

Venezuela 7, Puerto Rico 0 (sweep). Flores hit 2 HRs, and Suarez went 4 innings and combined with four relievers on a shutout.

Puerto Rico 4, Venezuela 3 (10 innings): Puerto Rico won on 2 pinch hits. Rosario's pinch hit homer in the 5th tied the game 3-3, and after 2 great defensive plays by Lindor kept it tied, Panik delivered a pinch hit single in the 10th for the win.

SEC Games:

SEC 5, Puerto Rico 3. League Rules and Sample Lay-out of cards to start game.

1. We all 2-game series, with 4-man starting rotations, but with each team throwing either their No. 1 pitcher and No. 4 pitcher in a series, or the No. 2 and No. 3 so there is no advantage if one team played more games then the other.

2. Relievers can pitch one inning in one of the games in each 2-game series, with the following exceptions:

a. A reliever who averaged at least 2 innings per appearance can pitch 2 relief innings.

b. A pitcher who comes in during an inning can either finish the inning, or if he retires everyone he faces in that inning, then he can keep pitching until he allows anyone to reach base or the end of the next inning.

3. We count each game as a 3-game series. Because a team has the same 14% chance of winning by at least 5 runs as the 14% chance of sweeping a 3-game series, we give the winning team credit for 2 wins and the losing team credit for winning 1 game, unless both of the following two things occur to award the winning team all 3 wins for a "sweep:"

a. The winning team was ahead by at least 5 runs at the end of the 8th inning, and

b. The winning team did not use their best reliever available for the game through those 8 innings. The best reliever is defined as the reliever available for that game (not resting due to pitching in a preivous game) with the best projected Neutral ERA on the team.

4. If the game goes into extra innings, each extra inning is started with the last player to make an out in the previous inning on second base, and if he scores the run is recorded as unearned.

5. Pitchers bat (we provided 10 relievers for each team, so they should have sufficient arms).

6. You do not need a board to play, but here is what our set-up looked like for the game we were lining up in what turned out to be Yu Darvish no-hitter against the Pac-12.
