De La Cruz Salvages Reds Series

 After the Diamondbacks and Reds hit deep flies that did not make it out of the Reds homer friendly park (11-63 = HR, but both were in the 64-88 range for fly outs), Elly De La Cruz homered in a 32 (as pictured, with his 32-34 homer range) for a 10-8 Reds win.

However, this was still a disappointing series for the Reds as they lost the first game 10-5 for a "sweep," meaning they officially lose the series 1 games to 4 to drop to 23-31 and in 9th place. The Diamondbacks continue to pile up runs - improving back above .500 at 26-24.

Now that we have the handful of new Statis-Pro cards for our 9 remaining NL teams it is clear why the Reds have surged.

The top row in the photo are the No. 1-3 batters in their line-up, all new cards not in cards run at the outset if the season. Then the fourth card PB 2-8 lefty starter Andrew Abbott - even more impressive since like the other Reds pitchers he accomplished his stats in a hitters park so the top home run for opposing batters is changed.to a deep fly out.

 At our Statis-Pro 48-game mark we relegated both the San Diego Padres - in 11th place of 11 teams in our league and 10th in actual MLB play - and the New York Mets - who are not in the playoff mix despite having the easiest schedule to date without playing the top three teams in the league even before losing Pham, Verlander and Scherzer. 

That leaves nine teams for the rest of our season, with their games to play on the grid below. Below we print the depth chart for these nine teams, and if a player changed teams, is a new card or is no longer with the team, we note that in parenthesis by the player. At each position, we start with the starting player (or No. 1 pitcher or reliever) and then go to the 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th best - then do the same at each position. However, that order is the actual MLB depth chart, in many cases the Statis-Pro card that is used to start the games might be different.

We pasted all the new cards for those nine teams below, and you can see why the Reds are so much better as a team this year with one star after another as shown below. First,the depth charts for the nine teams continuing in our league. We do not use cards if the player has an "IL60" by them. If we believe a player with a card might be on the team, we list that the card is not on the roster but they might be checking back. An (up) means the player is playing much better than the projections on which his card was based and thus the PB is adjusted one in his favor every plate appearance (+1 for a pitcher, -1 for batter) and vice versa for (down) if they are playing well below the projections.

Padres Relegated; Our Standings and Top 25 ERAs

With all teams through 16 series, we ran our standings. The biggest difference between our play and the actual MLB is the Philadelphia Phillies, who would actually be 4th if the actual playoffs started today, but but are lagging in 10h place in the Statis-Pro season.

However, having added Michael Lorenzen to a rotation that already had two PB 2-8 starters, we will see if their dominant starting pitching can pull them from 4 games out of the playoffs in our league into the playoffs. Our plan right now is to relegate the Padres - who are 11th in our league and 10th in the actual MLB, to leave 10 teams with three 2-game series each left.

16-Game NL Statis-Pro Summary: Giants Beat Marlins; Face Brewers

Our NL Statis-Pro season hits the 16-game mark season - four times through each 4-man rotation - with our upcoming San Francisco Giants vs. Milwaukee Brewers 2-game series. The link to all player cards and the game is at the bottom of this blog.

We include the box scores and line-ups for the Gants big 7-5 and 5-4 win over the Marlins, both reflected in this tracker of our games. Under our system in which each game counts as three games, won 3 games to 0 only if a team wins by 5 runs or more, the Marlins hit the mark at 26-22 for fourth place in our game - behind the Braves, Dodgers and Brewers in our overall standings.

The Giants and Marlins were originally relegated (the Cardinals, Pirates, Rockies and Nationals still are to leave an 11-team league). Therefore we had to play all 16 games for both teams to catchup to the other nine teams at the 16-game mark. 

Starting Pitcher Rotations: To make sure we can always play teams against each other even when one has played more games and at a different part of their rotation, we play all 2-game series and pitch either the No. 1 and No. 4 pitchers in the rotation, or the No. 2 and No. 3 pitchers neither team has a big disadvantage like they would if a series were to set up a No. 1 and No. 2 for one team, and No. 3 and No. 4 for the opponent.

Reliever Pitcher Usage: We also want each team to go in with the bullpen rested so one team doesn't have an advantage. Therefore each team can use each of their relievers in one but not both of their games in a 2-game series. Most relievers have an SR/RR: 0/3 and Max IP 2 on their card. In Statis-Pro the "3" means in relief they start with 3 endurance, and any time an inning ends, or they allow a player to reach base other than an error, or an earned run scores, then the endurance drops one. The "Max 2" means the pitcher can go part of 2 innings, but we normally have them pitch only 1 inning each unless they come in to get out of a jam in one inning and then stay on for another inning. However, this is dangerous because if they allow even a single runner, then the inning ends, they have dropped from RR 3 to RR 1 going into their one full inning. One more runner in their full inning and their endurance would already be out and their PB would drop by one (e.g. from a PB 2-8 to a PB 2-7) and continue to drop for any of the items listed above.

Below is the combined box score for the Giants' batters in the two games against the Marlins. As noted in the line score above, the Giants trailed 4-0 in the first game until a th inning homer by JD Davis and then a game-winning 8th inning homer by Michael Conforto for the 7-5 win. In the second game Davis homered again, offsetting an error (he is a poor fielding third baseman with an E6, CD-1) to allow two unearned runs in the 5-4 win.

The Giants 20-22 mark going into the Brewers series is much better than last year's record, the last stats factored into the projected player cards, and but not as good as this year's incredible season.

In the first game ace Alex Cobb pitched four no-hit innings, but was hit hard in the fifth inning and the bull pen needed to be strong to get the win. In the second game Alex Wood pitched well, but two fifth inning errors allowed two unearned runs and he ran out of endurance in the prolonged 5th inning.  Tylor Rogers (not the same pitcher as Taylor Rogers who saved the first game), did give up a homer to Jazz Chisholm Jr to allow the Marlins within 5-4  but then held on.

In facing the Brewers in the next series, a PB 2-8 righty Logan Webb will pitch the first game, then lefty Sean Manaea, who is not as dominant as some past years at PB 4-7.

On the pitching front, last year's Cy Young Award Winner Sandy Alcantara carried the lead and looked save until Drew's homer, but did not get the win after Tanner Scott gave up Conforto's homer.  The second game featured our first use of the new PB 2-7 card for rookie Eury Perez, who has been the best Marlins pitcher based purely on ERA, but does not have the endurance of Alcantara, who has a rare "Max 8 IP" in the modern game.

Milwaukee Brewers Line-up for Giants Series

Note that the Brewers also rotated a couple of players based on if they hit lefties or righties better, but the line-up does not change - just the order.

The Brewers received three good batters in trades before the deadline, but the only one to crack the Statis-Pro starting line-up is 1st baseman Carlos Santana. He is both a much better 1st baseman than Rowdy Tellez, letting Tellez move to DH, but also kills left-handed pitching so we will bat him 3rd against Manaea while he will hit 6th in the opener.

While we have all 11-teams in one league rather than divisions, the Brewers are among the same three Division Leaders form real MLB in our Statis-Pro Standings (with the Braves and Dodgers).
