KS 2022 Holds Off Rally by 'Jesus' from He Got Game and CT 1996

Ray Allen exploded for 30 points to rally 2-seed Connecticut 1996 late from double digits down, but Kansas 2022 national champs held them off for the upset. Allen starred as "Jesus" in the hoops classic He Got Game (not suitable for younger audiences), was the 52nd greatest NBA player ever, then finished with an amazing 3-pointer to bring the Miami Heat back from dead after fans had left to take the title.

Details will be added. Here is the scoresheet and players in the game at the start of the game indicated by coins (dimes get the ball twice as much as pennies).

As the scoresheet shows, Kansas led by double digits until late in the second half with a 63-51.

However Allen and his backcourt mate Sheffield then led a quick 15-8 run to cut it to 5 with 5 minutes to play.

Sheffield and Allen hit 3-pointers and and Sheffield came up with a steal and fed Allen for a fastbreak layup in the middle if that run.

However, UConn then failed two converted on two straight possessions that could have made it a position, and when another Allen 3-pointer in the final seconds finally did cut it to 83-80, UConn had to foul, and Kansas hit both free throws for the 85-80 win to become our first elite 8 team.

Resuming All-Time Great Men's and Women's Value Add Basketball Game Tournaments

We play our Statis-Pro baseball game about half the year, and with the LA Dodgers sweeping our annual World Series, we now return to the Value Add Basketball Game of the all-time great men's and women's college teams.

WOMEN’S ALL-TIME TOURNAMENT – Pat Summit’s 1998 Tennessee team won the first all-time women’s tournament in the Value Add Basketball game with four straight wins. We had a couple of tournaments going of teams created after that, and have now combined the two tournaments we had going up until we broke for baseball, and reseeded the remaining unbeatens from both tournaments into one. Their bracket appears first below. Below that the remaining men’s unbeaten tournament teams outside of the two champs that already won a full-tournament.

Team, all-time game rank  Best Players (rank if top 40 game card of all-time)  Seed  plays
Connecticut 2002, #2Sue Bird, Diana Taurasi, 3, 7 all-time best player1bye

Kentucky 2013, #39DeNesha Stallworth143
Texas Tech 1993, #44Sheryl Swoopes, 18 all-time best player152

Team not listed - Tennessee 1998 already won previous tournament. We consider the #2 through #5 seeds heavy favorites, by 9 points or double figures - however the other games are very even.

Men's Tournament

Bill Walton’s 1972 UCLA won 6 straight to take the all-time title from our first 96 Value Add Basketball teams, then Paul Pierce’s 1997 Kansas won 5 straight to win our second title. Since then we added many more teams and every team has played at least once. We have reseeded the remaining 26 teams who are still undefeated, most 1-0. The seeds are based on our rankings right now – which started with how good we believe they are based on their cards but is then adjusted for each win and loss.

We would consider the 5 to 9 seeds as well as 13-seed Duke as double digit favorites, the other games as likely competitive. We did fall into one actual rematch from a regular seasons with the 2023 Texas and Gonzaga teams facing in our #16 vs. #17 seed. They did actually play early that season and Texas destroyed the Zags, but it was at Texas and at the end of the season the Zags did go to the Final 4 while Texas was beaten in the Elite 8.

New Cards for 22 of Greatest 75 Players for New Teams

Click here for the google sheet or on the images below for the 22 all-time great players for the new Value Add Basketball Game teams we are now creating.

The four other new teams we are adding are from the www.kenpom.com era, so I can make them based on those stats and do the whole team at a time. The coincidentally are based on four incredible players in four consecutive seasons who made the Athletic list of the greatest 75 players of all time;

Texas 2007 Kevin Durant #13 player of all time.

UCLA 2008 Russell Westbrook #46 player of all time.

Arizona St. 2009 James Harden #33 player of all time.

Weber St. 2010 Damian Lillard #68 player of all time.

The process for the 20th century teams takes much longer, and one step we always do is compare the NBA stats of the great players, particularly for stats not kept on college when they played (minutes played, three point shots, steals, blocked shots etc).

We basically took each players best NBA season (obviously against much tougher competition than they faced in college, and assumed they’d draw more fouls and hit 10% more of their 3-point shots (much closer arc) and 2-point shots (much easier defenders).

Below are the cards we created for each player. Note the dunk range and adjusted defense range are all the same, 51-56 and -6. These are usually for the whole team to adjust for level of competition, however since these players cards are based on playing against NBA players we don’t need to adjust the cards down for the ones who played lighter competition.

Durant, Westbrook, Harden and Lillard will be created with the rest of their teams from www.kenpom.com, but we will later add the 22 teams that go with these players.

Do note on the cards below that some great players from the days when front line players played inside, often with their backs to the basket, and would never have taken a 3-pointer, have no 3-pointers but do score and get fouled on a "1" on the 20-sided die roll instead.

Blue numbers on these stats were estimated using various methods because those stats were not kept then.

All-time Great Players' Bracket with Links Added to Each Player

We realize the bracket we posted was a little hard to read since the great players did not fit on the bracket, so we re putting the teams in the same order with links to each star. If you click each link it takes you to the player's page at the College Basketball Reference  The number to the the left of each team is the seed, while the number to the right is where they rank of our 226 great teams in our game.

We also chose iconic college basketball arenas for each of our four regions. No football stadiums for us, but we also chose to need big enough arenas to seat at least 15,000 imaginary fans. That eliminated iconic Cameron Indoor Stadium (Duke, sell out 9,314) or Hinkle Fieldhouse (Butler, sell out 9,100).
