Feb 5 Barely Survives 16-seed Scare with rally past FSU

Fairleigh Dickinson and UMBC (Baltimore) proved a 16-seed can beat a 1-seed the last six years, and for a while it looked like the 1968 Florida State would pull the same upset against the Fab 5 of 1993 Michigan.

Dave Cowens started the game with a basket and foul for a traditional 3-point play, and it appeared the Seminoles would into overtime up 37-28 with a chance at a shocker.

However, just before the horn Chris Webber grabbed an offensive rebound and scored to make it 37-30.

Michigan kept pressing and keeping it close but did not take the lead until 10:45 (18 possessions) to go when Jalen Rose hit a 3-pointer to give the 1-seed Wolverines a 45-43 lead.

Rose had a traditional and-one 3-point play with five minutes (9 possessions) to play to give Michigan their first 6-point lead at 57-51.

On consecutive trips Chris Webber rejected a shot by Cowens, then stole the ball and fed ahead to Ray Jackson who scored to give Michigan their first double digit lead at 61-51. They held on for a 62-55 win to escape.
