Fielding Decides Ultimate No. 2 pitching duel (Verlander (nym) vs Nola (Phil)

About the best matchup of non-aces possible came down to the fielding. Justin Verlander (6.2 ip, 2 hits, 1 unearned run) vs. Aaron Nola (7 ip, 3 hits, no runs) was a 1-0 Phillies win.

Verlander ran out of endurance after 2 out walks to Bryson Stott and Trea Turner in the 7th. Dominant set up man David Peterson came in and induced a grounder to 3rd base but poor fielding Eduardo Escobar (E6, cd1) threw away a very routine grounder (e6-e10) to allow the game winning run.

In the top of the 9th Phillies catcher JT Realmuto saved the game in the field. Closer Jose Alvardo walked Jeff McNeil and Tommy Pham (obr-sp b-b) pinch ran. Francisco Lindor struck out and with Mark Canha up Pham took a lead to try to take advantage of the new easier stolen base rule (bases closer together, bags bigger) but JT Realmuto's TA resulted him picking Pham off first.

That ultimately saved the game, because Canha then doubled to right in what would have tied the game. However Daniel Vogelbach then grounded out to leave him at 2nd base.

Second game will be in New York.
