The Reds blasted the Rays 9-3 to take first place on run differential as they both went to 2-1.
Then in the 9th inning against the Astros Matt McLean hit a 2-run homer to force extra innings, and third baseman Ke'Bryan Hayes made a diving clutch defensive play to preserve a 4-3 win in 11 innings.
The Reds now win the poll unless Tampa beat the Astros by 6 runs or more.
Standings
Reds 3-1, +8 runs scored
Rays 2-1, +3 runs scored
Astros 0-3, -11 runs scored
If rays beat astros by 5 they still lose the tie-breaker because the reds would then have the head to head run differential.
