9 Slight Updates to Men's Cards and Our Bracket Falls from 99.9% to 98% with Duke Loss

In addition to the four new Women's teams added to the Value Add Basketball Game great teams from the 2025 season, we had recently added several men's teams already listed. Nine of those teams were still playing, and their team cards still good except some need their Dunk Range and Adj Dunk defensive ratings adjusted slightly until they are updated. The following are the link to those 9 teams with the slight adjustments to the cards.

The bracket we based on www.kenpom.com balance in offense and defense rose to 40,000th of 24,400,000 until Duke blew their lead on Houston late. Now even after the correct pick of Florida as champ the bracket was still only back to the 98th percentile. That's it for the college basketball focus for a while. Below is the image of the high mark for the bracket before the Duke loss.

UConn Dominates, Added as 1 of 4 New Women's Value Add Basketball Teams

While we had switched to our Statis-Pro baseball half of the season, today's basketball women's championship  required another post ...

UConn looked every bit as dominant as the great teams over the years in two blowout wins in the Final 4 this weekend to take the schools 12th championship. It has been a while (2016) since we added a UConn Women's team to the Value Add Basketball Game, so we have calculated their cards along with three other Sweet 16 teams we are adding because their school was not yet represented in the game - Mississippi, Kansas State, and the second best 2025 team we are adding - TCU. Last year's South Carolina team is already in the game, and we usually wait at least a few years to add a new team.

Here are the cards which you can use, but they will be added to the list on the game instructions soon for easier printing.

Verlander Bests Musgrove as Padres Fielding Collapses.

 Admittedly we had one eye on the UConn women looking like a potential new Value Add Basketball team as they won a Final 4 blowout, while we had see Justin Verlander look 42 years old in his real debut.

However in the Statis-pro baseball debut he enjoyed a couple of deep drives being caught in his new home park in San Francisco and ridiculous support in a 13-2 win.

The Padres Joe Musgrove had the worst luck we remember, with 3 errors committed behind him as he allowed 6 runs, all unearned.

The format is just google sheets, so you need to define the area around a team and then print. We will start to produce PDFs of each team like below to give you another option. Our opening 2-game series was the LA Dodgers vs. Cincinnati Reds in one of two 6-team NL Divisions we will play. Here the other four teams in that division - five teams from the old NL West Division from back when I was playing in the 1980s and 90s - with the addition of Arizona. Here is a PDF, with the batters, then the fielders in the middle, then the pitcher's for the rest of our "old NL West + ARI."

The red player is the suggested closer, with suggested starting pitchers above them and relievers below them. They basically go from best to worst with the top 6 starters we recommend at the top, then below the closer another 13 relieves from next best to worst.

Ohtani, de la Cruz Late Heroics vs. Closers - Dodgers Win in 10th

If the rest of our 2025 Statis-Pro is exciting as our season opener this will be fun.

Nick Martinez started the game by keeping the action on his card "8" on a pb 2-8 card to record a strikeout on what would have been a homer for Shohei Ohtani against most pitchers (28 random number) and kept it close 2-0 into the 9th.  We track our results here.

But after Tyler Glasnow left with 7 innings of 2 hit ball, Elly De La Cruz singled a runner to 3rd with 2 outs  in the 9th inning, stole second base and then scored the game tying run to force extra innings and deny ace Tanner Scott the save.

(Post note: the Reds started with hope in the second game when Cruz led off with a homer. However it was all Dodgers after that in a 9-1 win. Back to the first game ...)

Reds ace reliever Alexis Díaz came in to get the first two outs in the top of the 10th, but at only an above-average PB 2-7, he left a pitch up to Ohtani who drilled a two run homer to give the Dodgers a 4-2 Opening Day win. 

Miguel Rojas appeared to give the Dodgers some breathing room with a DEEP drive in the 5th that usually goes out in Cincinnati's home games (see Deep 11'-68 = HR, Great American Ball Park CIN) in the header of their batters cards to see that 11-68 is a homer in Cincinnati while only a 71-88 is a deep fly caught for an out with runners advancing.

Instead the Dodgers has to build a 2-0 without a long ball, capped when Tommy Edman came in as a pinch runner in the 8th, stole second base, then scored on a double by Andy Pages to make it 2-0, before Cruz's heroics.

Many of the top relievers for both teams were used in this game, so by our league rules cannot be used in the 2nd game at the other place, in this case the much more forgiving pitchers park in Los Angeles (Deep 11'-35 = HR, Dodger Stadium), so a flyout on 36-88. The Dodgers seem to have a bigger edge in that game because each series we throw either the 1st and 4th best starter or the 2nd and 3rd, which in this case means the Reds have only the average (PB 4-7) lefty Andrew Abbott while even the Dodgers 4th best starter Roki Sasaki is an elite PB2-8 (top 15% of all pitchers including closers based on his WAR per 9 innings minus ERA.

If the Dodgers get going, the key for the Reds will be to not fall behind by 5 runs by the end of the 8th, since that would give the Dodgers a chance to claim a "sweep" of 3 games to 0 or a blowout win, whereas a closer game like this one is simply scored as a 2 games to 1 edge.

Statis-Pro Baseball - Part 3 - Batters

Statis-Pro Baseball - 2nd of 3 Parts - Ball Park Factors

 This week we finally calculated the projected 2025 Pitchers' cards. Before we complete the teams with the Projected batter cards, we need to use the ballpark factors.

Each batter has three DEEP numbers on their cards, and those determine if a deep drive is caught with all runners advancing for a "Sacfly" (technically not recorded as a Sac Fly unless a runner was on third and scored, but all advance) or goes out of the park for a homer. We need to calculate that before calculating the batters card because the batter will have more of their deep drives go out of the park at home, and thus we only want to Home Run range on their card to create the right chance of a homer knowing that about this many will go out of the park on deep drives.

Therefore during a game you only need to worry about the Deep HR range below from 11-88. The second number is just to let you know what was taken off a card when it was calculated.
