1907 Cubs Record 10 Steals to Pass Brett's KC for 1st in All-Time Midwest

Click here for links to the 60 all-time great Statis-Pro baseball teams.

While winning our All-Time Midwest Division will not require running the gauntlet of our Boston-New York Division, the 1907 Chicago Cubs looked every bit the favorite we made them when Frank Chance set a Statis-Pro record in a 12-6 drubbing of the 1991 Minnesota Twins and their ace Jack Morris.

We are very excited you can now pull up any team's Statis-Pro cards and play a game with just 2 clicks - one click on this list of great teams and then click on the team you want and print.

Twins catcher Brian Harper is a great hitter (.311 batting average, .783 OPS) but has the weakest throwing arm of T-C so the Cubs ran at every opportunity. In the second game to be played with the dead balls of 1907, I may use Junior Ortiz, who is just the opposite with the strongest throwing arm (T-A), but hits only .209 with a .555 OPS.

This game was our final debut of our 12 Midwest teams - and I put summaries of every other teams opening series below our standings - which are based on winning percentage with run differential as the tie-breaker. In all fairness the teams we put 2nd and 3rd in our preseason rankings - the 1942 Cardinals 1929 Cubs - had to play each other first. However, George Brett gave 1985 Kansas City an opening day upset sweep of the 1922 St. Louis Browns.

In addition to the Cubs 12-6 opening game win against the Twins, here are the other match-ups.

The game before that one was our 4th straight pitcher's duel, with the Brewers Pete Vuckovich and  White Sox Mark Buehrle doing something that would never happen today - both throwing complete games.  Buehrle threw six innings of no hit ball, but big George Thomas, the hero of every home run hitting, beer drinking, softball player singled to start the seventh inning. He was replaced by the speedy Marshall Edwards (rare SP: AA, though there are a few AAA in history) who stole second base and would score the game-winner in a 2-0 win. Rollie Fingers was not even needed, so can pitcher when the two game series is completed.

George Brett's KC fought two very even games against the St. Louis Browns twice, winning 5-3 and 3-2 in a little bit of an upset since we actually picked KC 12th, but all these great teams are so close.

The biggest shocker was the St Louis Cardinals 1968 Bob Gibson with his all-time low 1.12 ERA losing to Toronto 4-5 to give the win to the back-to-back World Series champs of Roberto Alomar, Paul Molitor and Rickey Henderson - meaning Molitor is actually in this division twice with his Brewers team.

The 1982 speedy St Louis Cardinals of Ozzie Smith and Lonnie Smith managed a split with Hank Aaron's Milwaukee Braves, with teams trading 3-2 wins.

In the matchup of the other two super teams, the 1942 St Louis Cardinals or Stan Musial beat the 1929 Cubs of Rogers Hornsby, 2-0 in 10 innings.

For the record, I am a big Google Drive fan, BUT I do get a lot of comments from board gamers that prefer not to use one but want to play either our Statis-Pro Baseball Game or Value Add Basketball Game.

Beginning today you can click on this link to get the list of links to teams below. We added "Simple Rules" to these new sheets so you can play with nothing more than clicking on two of the teams below, and getting two regular 6-sided dice and two 8-sided dice of different colors and play an entire game.

If you want to play a more advanced game, you just need to add a 5th die (a 20-sided die) and then join the 28,000 unique visitors to the Statis-Pro Baseball Instructions. Also below the list of teams below, we list them again along with links to the top players on each team and if each player was in the ESPN top 100 players of all time and the three newer players who almost certainly will be - Aaron Judge, Shohei Ohtani and Mookie Betts.

Recently we added a similar list of basketball team links for our Value Add Basketball Game, which has an even bigger following with more than 77,000 unique visitors to date and coverage in the ultimate source for simulated games - Sports SIMS Magazine.

Musial's Cardinals Best Hornsby's Cubs on 10th Inning Pitcher Homer Using Simple Rules

We thought we'd pick a likely pitchers' duel to test our "simple rules" version of Statis-Pro baseball using only two 6-sided dice to get a 2-12 result and two 8-sided dies of different dice to get an 11-88 result.

We set up this simple game with rules that fit on the bottom of all 60 all-time great teams on this sheet, which will also be broken into drop box individual files like we did with the all-time great Value Add Basketball Game.

The first game using our simple rules was every bit the pitcher's duel we expected, but Stan Musial was the only player on either team with two hits and his ace Mort Cooper going 9 shutout innings and getting out of a bases loaded, one-out jam in the second inning.

However, the ending was a shocker. In the bottom of the 10th inning , his replacement Howie Krist pitched a 1-2-3 top of the 10th and then slugged a 2-run homer in the bottom of the 10th. Pitchers hit much better in 1942, but a homer was still only 0.6% chance of the homer. Pitchers at bat skip the PB roll and go straight to a 11-88 on the batting card, where a 23 was a DEEP DRIVE. Playing in 1942 (since the Cards were home against the 1929 Cubs) an 11-38 was a home run while a 41-88 would have been a fly out.

The 23 random number, the only number that would have been a DEEP drive, was followed by a 26 random number to fall within an 11-38 home run range.

The following is the 1942 Cards team sheet with the simple game rules on the bottom of the sheet, so all we printed was this team sheet and the Cubs 1929 sheet and started rolling the dice.

Below that is the simple scoresheet, which just records all non-strike out outs as "O".

Statis-Pro Baseball Teams Now Easier to Print

We just simplified the Statis-Pro baseball game print out of teams. When you pull up this google sheet, every 40 rows is a new team so you can define rows 1-40, or 41-80 etc. We plan to convert these into 60 pdfs like we just did with basketball. The batters are in black font, the pitchers in blue font and then we put simple rules in red just below the teams to get a new player started. Here is Ty Cobb's team as an example.

Previously you had to print the pitchers and batters separate for each team. Click here for the complete instructions to play the game.

WNBA & MLB Drawing TV Millions - Double Header Yankees-Braves & Colorado St.-Stanford

More than 3,100 unique visitors yesterday to this page, as readers split between Classic Statis-Pro Baseball Game and the last three women's debut games in the Value Add Basketball Game.

More than 2 million fans are watching big regular games featuring Caitlin Clark and just as more than 2 million are watching the big regular season MLB games such as Yankees Astros.

We decided to kick off July 4 by trying a MLB Baseball-Women's College Basketball Game.

Gerrit Cole and Aaron Judge will travel back to 1914 to visit the Braves first home in Boston, then the last great mid-major era team Colorado State from 1999 to play the Stanford 2012 women's team.

In our first baseball-basketball doubleheader:

The 1999 Colorado State women pulled off a stunningly easy 81-58 upset of 2012 Stanford. Becky Hammon (23 points) hit a 3-pointer on a breakaway to make it 32-24 with 2:30 to play in the half and Stanford could not get the offense going. The biggest surprise was Katie Cronin grabbing 17 rebounds despite Stanford's great duo of Nnemkadi Ogwumike and Chiney Ogwumike having better rebounding cards. Colorado shot all the way up from 49th to 23rd in our all-time rankings, while Stanford dropped from 43rd to 58th of the 64 all-time great teams.

In the baseball game, the dead balls of 1914 held the 2022 Yankees in check, as both Isiah Kiner-Falefa and Andrew Benintendi had deep drives that would have been out during almost any park and era (a 26 and 23 of the 11-88 random number) but dead ball years only allow a homer on 11-18. The second game will be played in the modern era where deep drives go out on an 11-78. With those balls caught, Bill James went all 9 innings (as pitchers usually did the) allowing only five hits for a 1-0 win. Besides the two deep drives, the Yankees also had a chance when Aaron Judge doubled in the 4th inning to put runners on 2nd and 3rd with no outs, but they could not score. The games only run scored when Johnny Evers singled in the seventh, stole 2nd base, and Charles Schmidt singled him home for the 1-0 win. The tough luck loser was Gerrit Cole, despite allowing only four hits, walking none, and striking out in seven innings. When one more game is played, half of our 60 all-time great baseball teams will have played game.

Here we list the starting line-ups for the baseball teams on the left, with all 9 batters and the Game 1 starting pitcher. On the right are all 5 starters and 5 reserves for both Stanford and Colorado State.

Cepeda Homers, But Blue Jays, Olerud, Stun Bob Gibson

First off we joke about the "gods of Statis-pro baseball" making things happen. We played this game in memory of Orlando Cepeda.

In the second inning with Roger Maris on first he hit a deep drive, but playing in the dead ball year of 1968 that figured to be in the deep flyout range of 21-88, but instead it was a "13" for a 2-run Homer.

We assumed this game might come down to if Rickey Henderson or Lou Brock could steal two bases and score for a 1-0 win, but instead we had a shocking game ...

Bob Gibson with his 1.12 ERA could not hold the lead and lost 5-4.

When we looked at his card we honestly thought every game he pitched in our game might be a no hitter.

His PB 2-9 means the action is on his card 83 percent of the time.

When it is, only 6 of 64 numbers (11-16) are a hit.

As mentioned we were playing in the dead ball 1968 so even if a batter launched a deep drive there was a 88 percent chance it would stay in the park and be caught.

And this was a season where pitchers batted so Blue Jays Paul Monitor (.332 batting average) was on the bench.

We were shocked when John Olerud singled to start the 2nd inning and break up the no hitter.

Once someone is on base the clutch defense and clutch offense (BD) can come into play.

Joe Carter's shot toward 2nd baseman Julian Javier seemed likely to be a double play due to his clutch defense CD-5, but instead the one in 8 times it went by him (81-88) for a single allowing even the slow footed Olerud to go to third.

He would score.

However the fourth was the biggest factor as both Roberto Alomar and Olerud drew walks, and then on a clutch batting draw, Devon White shocked the game with a 3-run homer.

They added one more run, unearned, when Rickey Henderson reached on a dropped strike out, stole 2nd, and then scored on Alomar's double.

It was a rare non-complete game for Gibson, who had an endurance of sr 18 but also can pitch up to 11 innings.

The Blue Jays pull off the shocker and will now go home and can start Monitor at DH.

RIP Orlando Cepeda - his debut pushes back Gerrit Cole vs 1914 Boston Braves

RIP Orlando Cepeda. It looks like our next Statis-Pro game will feature the 1968 St. Louis Cardinals, who will start Bob Gibson with his 1.12 ERA and then the No. 4 Starter Steve Carlton.

We had planned on our next game being Gerrit Cole and the 2022 Yankees against the 1914 Boston Braves and MVP Johnny Evers - the MVP that year with one home run and 31 sacrifice bunts :-). Evers was part of the Chicago Cubs famous double play combo until coming to Boston to deliver a world series sweep. New York Giant fans moaned in this poem about the three turning would be singles into double plays in a "Tinker to Evers to Chance" poem:

These are the saddest of possible words:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance."
Trio of bear cubs, and fleeter than birds,
Tinker and Evers and Chance.
Ruthlessly pricking our gonfalon bubble,*
Making a Giant hit into a double-(play)-
Words that are heavy with nothing but trouble:
"Tinker to Evers to Chance

We will play them because of the passing of the great Orlando Cepeda. Here is his card in the year the pitchers were so dominant that MLB then lowered the mound.

Ten years before this season when no one could hit in the entire league, he keas the league with 38 doubles as a rookie, then a few years later led the league with 46 homers. He twice led the league in being hit by pitch (14 and 12) and this season was hit 9 times.
